Why Aberrant Sorcery?
The Aasimar Aberrant Sorcery Sorcerer is a fascinating paradox of divine origin and Far Realm corruption. Mechanically, this build earns a 5/10 synergy rating. While the combination isn't the most optimized powerhouse in the game, the defensive layering is spectacular. By level 6, your Aasimar's Celestial Resistance (radiant and necrotic) seamlessly stacks with the subclass's Psychic Defenses, giving you innate resistance to three of the rarest and most dangerous damage types in D&D.
Your primary role is a Controller, and Aberrant Sorcery excels here better than almost any other subclass. The core engine of this build comes online at level 6 with Psionic Sorcery. By spending Sorcery Points to cast spells from your Psionic Spells list, you completely bypass verbal, somatic, and non-costly material components. This makes your crowd control uncounterable and perfect for stealth scenarios. You can lock down a room with Hunger of Hadar while standing completely still, giving no indication you cast a spell.
The main friction in this build is bonus action economy. Your Celestial Revelation transformation, your Telepathic Speech, and standard metamagic options like Quickened Spell all fight for your bonus action. To play this build optimally, you must pre-cast your racial flight before combat when possible, and rely heavily on your highly efficient Psionic Sorcery rather than burning points on standard metamagic.
Aberrant Sorcery Features
Psionic Spells
Level 3You learn additional spells that don't count against the number of spells you know: Arms of Hadar, Dissonant Whispers, Mind Sliver (level 1); Calm Emotions, Detect Thoughts (level 3); Hunger of Hadar, Sending (level 5); Evard's Black Tentacles, Summon Aberration (level 7); Rary's Telepathic Bond, Telekinesis (level 9).
Telepathic Speech
Level 3As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet. You and that creature can speak telepathically with each other while you are within a number of miles equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1 mile). The connection lasts for a number of minutes equal to your sorcerer level. It ends early if you are incapacitated, die, or use this ability on a different creature.
Psychic Defenses
Level 6You gain resistance to psychic damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
Psionic Sorcery
Level 6When you cast any spell from your Psionic Spells feature, you can cast it by expending a number of sorcery points equal to the spell's level instead of expending a spell slot. When you cast a spell using sorcery points this way, it requires no verbal or somatic components, and it requires no material components unless they are consumed by the spell.
Revelation in Flesh
Level 14You can spend 1 or more sorcery points as a bonus action to transform your body for 10 minutes. For each sorcery point spent, you can gain one of these benefits: see invisible creatures within 60 feet, gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed with a hover, gain a swimming speed twice your walking speed and breathe underwater, or become slimy and pliable — you can move through spaces as narrow as 1 inch without squeezing and spend 5 feet of movement to escape nonmagical restraints or grapples.
Warping Implosion
Level 18As an action, you can teleport to an unoccupied space you can see within 120 feet. Each creature within 30 feet of the space you left must make a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failure, a creature takes 3d10 force damage and is pulled straight toward the space you left, ending in an unoccupied space as close to it as possible. On a success, it takes half damage and isn't pulled. Once you use this feature, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you spend 5 sorcery points to use it again.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
At level 1, you are a fragile d6 hit die caster with 13 DEX and 14 CON. Survival is your only priority. Take Mage Armor and Shield immediately to fix your atrocious AC. For offense, rely on your 7.8 spell DPR using cantrips like Mind Sliver. At level 3, the build cracks open. You gain Psionic Spells, adding Arms of Hadar and Dissonant Whispers to your arsenal without costing spells known. You also get Telepathic Speech, which is excellent for coordinating stealth operations. At level 4, take the Telekinetic feat. This rounds your 15 CHA to 16, and gives you a reliable bonus action push to shove enemies away from your fragile d6 body.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings 3rd-level spells and bumps your HP to a modest 32. Hunger of Hadar is your new best friend. At level 6, you hit the subclass zenith. Psychic Defenses grants you resistance to psychic damage and advantage against being charmed or frightened. More importantly, Psionic Sorcery lets you cast your Psionic Spells using Sorcery Points. Casting Hunger of Hadar for 3 points with zero components is vastly more efficient than standard casting. At level 8, take the Fey Touched feat (+1 CHA) to secure Misty Step and Gift of Alacrity, pushing your CHA toward 18.
Levels 11-16
By level 11, your spell DPR climbs to 10.18, and your HP hits 68. You should be dictating the flow of every battlefield. At level 12, use your ASI to cap your Charisma at 20. This maximizes your spell save DC, which is critical for making your control spells stick. At level 14, you gain Revelation in Flesh. Since your Aasimar Celestial Revelation already handles your flight needs, use your Sorcery Points here to gain truesight against invisible creatures or to squeeze your body through keyholes like liquid—a terrifying and potent exploration tool.
Levels 17-20
At level 17, you gain access to 9th-level spells like Wish, cementing your god-tier status. At level 18, Warping Implosion provides an incredible tactical nuke. You can teleport up to 120 feet, forcing a Strength save on enemies near your departure point, dealing 3d10 force damage and pulling them into a cluster. You can then immediately use your Aasimar flight to reposition further. For your level 19 ASI, take Resilient (Wisdom) to shore up your saving throws against high-tier magical effects.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Mind Sliver: The quintessential Aberrant cantrip. It targets Intelligence (a consistently weak monster save) and subtracts 1d4 from the target's next saving throw. Use this to set up your own massive control spells or help your party's casters. Minor Illusion: Excellent utility for creating cover or distractions.
Level 1-2 Spells
Dissonant Whispers: Gained via Psionic Spells. When cast, it forces enemies to use their reaction to flee, provoking devastating Opportunity Attacks from your melee allies. Silvery Barbs: Essential for protecting your d6 hit points and forcing rerolls on your control spells. Web: The premier 2nd-level control spell. Restrained is a brutal condition.
Level 3-5 Spells
Hunger of Hadar: Gained via Psionic Spells. Creates a zone of blindness, difficult terrain, and automatic damage. Cast this via Psionic Sorcery to make it uncounterable. Hypnotic Pattern: A fight-ending AoE charm. Synaptic Static: A non-concentration fireball that targets Intelligence and heavily debuffs enemy attack rolls.
High-Level Spells
Mass Suggestion: Non-concentration, multi-target control that lasts for 24 hours. Reverse Gravity: Incredibly potent against melee-only monsters with no ranged attacks. Wish: The ultimate spell, providing unmatched versatility for any situation.
Recommended Feats
Telekinetic
Take this at level 4. It boosts your 15 Charisma to 16, and gives you a bonus action shove. Because you are a Controller, you want to group enemies up. Pushing an enemy 5 feet back into your Hunger of Hadar or Evard's Black Tentacles is a massive tactical advantage.
Fey Touched
Take this at level 8. It provides another +1 to Charisma, free access to Misty Step (saving you a precious Sorcerer spell known), and Gift of Alacrity. Winning initiative is the single most important metric for a Controller, as laying down a Web before enemies scatter wins fights.
Metamagic Adept
Take this at level 12 or 16. Two extra Sorcery Points doesn't sound like much, but for an Aberrant Sorcerer, that's almost enough to cast an entirely free, uncounterable 3rd-level spell via Psionic Sorcery. It also expands your metamagic options, letting you pick up Subtle Spell or Twinned Spell.
Resilient (Wisdom)
Take this at level 19. By Tier 4, failing a Wisdom saving throw usually means your character is incapacitated, mind-controlled, or dead. Gaining proficiency in Wisdom saves ensures you maintain concentration on your reality-warping spells.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Seek out a Bloodwell Vial +1 immediately. Sorcerers live and die by their Sorcery Points, and regaining 5 points on a short rest completely changes how liberally you can use Telepathic Speech and early metamagic. A Pearl of Power is also highly valued at this stage to recoup a 2nd-level slot.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Upgrade to a Bloodwell Vial +2. You should also hunt for a Cloak of Displacement. With only 32 HP at level 5, you are incredibly fragile. Forcing disadvantage on all attack rolls against you ensures your d6 hit die isn't depleted by random arrows.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
A Far Realm Shard is a must-have for this specific subclass. Whenever you use a metamagic option on a spell, you can summon a tentacle to strike a creature for 3d6 psychic damage and frighten them. This pairs flawlessly with your Far Realm flavor and Psionic Sorcery mechanics.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Acquire a Staff of the Magi and a Robe of the Archmagi. The Robe fixes your AC, boosts your spell save DC to impossible heights, and gives you advantage on saving throws against spells. The Staff gives you a massive repository of free spells, freeing up your Sorcery Points entirely for Revelation in Flesh and Warping Implosion.
Party Composition
As an Aberrant Sorcerer, your party role is strictly Controller. You manipulate the battlefield, deny enemy actions, and set up your allies for massive damage. To make this build shine, you need a highly aggressive frontline that can capitalize on the movement you force.
A Paladin or Rogue is your absolute best friend. When you cast Dissonant Whispers via your Psionic Spells, the target is forced to use its reaction to run away. This movement explicitly provokes Opportunity Attacks. Giving a Paladin a free reaction attack to dump a Divine Smite, or a Rogue a reaction attack to apply a second Sneak Attack in the same round, is game-breaking.
You also pair beautifully with a Wizard or Bard. You can use Mind Sliver to debuff a boss's saving throw by 1d4, immediately followed by the Wizard casting Banishment or Polymorph. Your Telepathic Speech also allows you to coordinate these lethal combos in complete silence.
Multiclass Options
Hexblade Warlock 2
A two-level dip into Hexblade is extremely common for Sorcerers, and for good reason. It immediately fixes your AC by granting Medium Armor and Shield proficiency. It also provides Eldritch Blast and the Agonizing Blast invocation, giving you a resourceless, high-damage fallback option. The downside is delaying Psionic Sorcery to level 8, which hurts your controller progression.
Fighter 2
Taking two levels of Fighter gives you Action Surge. For a Controller, the ability to cast two leveled spells in a single turn (e.g., Mind Sliver to debuff, Action Surge, Hypnotic Pattern) is a devastating alpha strike. You also gain Constitution save proficiency if you take Fighter at level 1, protecting your concentration.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting Psionic Sorcery makes spells uncounterable: Players often forget that removing Verbal and Somatic components means an enemy caster literally cannot perceive you casting the spell. You cannot be Counterspelled if you use Psionic Sorcery.
- Wasting points on standard Metamagic: Standard Quickened Spell costs 2 Sorcery Points. Casting Dissonant Whispers via Psionic Sorcery costs 1 Point. Always prioritize Psionic Sorcery over standard metamagic for efficiency.
- Ignoring the Psionic Spells swap mechanic: The subclass allows you to swap your Psionic Spells for any Divination or Enchantment spell on the Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard list. Don't feel locked into Arms of Hadar if Hex or Tasha's Hideous Laughter fits your campaign better.
- Bonus Action traffic jams: Popping your Aasimar Celestial Revelation takes a bonus action. Using Telepathic Speech takes a bonus action. Revelation in Flesh takes a bonus action. Plan your turns carefully so you aren't wasting entire rounds just buffering yourself.
