Why Oath of Devotion?

The Oath of Devotion is often dismissed as the 'vanilla' Paladin, but mechanically, it is a powerhouse of accuracy and party defense. When you pair this subclass with the Dragonborn race, you cover the Paladin's biggest weakness—lack of area-of-effect damage—while turning yourself into an impenetrable frontline Defender. Your Breath Weapon lets you clear out swarms of weak enemies, saving your precious spell slots for Divine Smite on high-value targets.

What truly makes this build shine is the interaction between your Level 3 feature, Sacred Weapon, and heavy-hitting feats. By adding your Charisma modifier to your attack rolls as a Bonus Action, you completely negate the -5 penalty from Great Weapon Master. While other Paladins swing and miss, you are guaranteeing massive damage hits bathed in radiant light.

Furthermore, your defensive synergies are unmatched. Dragonborn Damage Resistance stacks beautifully with your heavy armor and d10 Hit Die. Once you reach Level 7, your Aura of Devotion makes you and your allies immune to the Charmed condition, completely shutting down Vampires, Succubi, and enemy enchanters. Add in Draconic Flight to solve the Paladin's mobility issues, and you have a heavily armored, flying Defender that commands the battlefield.

Oath of Devotion Features

Oath of Devotion Spells

Level 3

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed in the Oath of Devotion Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work. [Oath of Devotion Spells: 1st - Command, Sanctuary; 2nd - Lesser Restoration, Zone of Truth; 3rd - Beacon of Hope, Dispel Magic; 4th - Freedom of Movement, Guardian of Faith; 5th - Commune, Flame Strike]

Sacred Weapon

Level 3

As a Bonus Action, you can imbue one weapon that you're holding with positive energy. For 10 minutes, you add your Charisma modifier to attack rolls made with that weapon (in addition to your Strength or Dexterity modifier). The weapon emits bright light in a 20-foot Radius and dim light 20 feet beyond that. If the weapon is not magical, it becomes magical for the Duration of the effect.

Aura of Devotion

Level 7

You emanate an aura of dedication while you aren't Incapacitated. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have Advantage on saving throws against being Charmed. If a friendly creature in the aura is Charmed, that condition ends on it.

Smite of Protection

Level 15

When a creature within 30 feet of you that you can see takes damage, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage by half (round down) using your Lay on Hands. If a creature has taken more damage than its hit point maximum from the triggering damage, the creature is Incapacitated until the end of its next turn.

Holy Nimbus

Level 20

As an action, you can imbue your presence with holy power, causing bright light to surge out from you. You emit bright light in a 30-foot Radius and dim light 30 feet beyond that. Creatures of your choice that you can see in that light gain Advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects until the end of your next turn.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with a stat spread of STR 15, DEX 10, CON 13, INT 8, WIS 12, and CHA 14. You are building a heavy-weapon bruiser. Take the Defense Fighting Style at Level 2 for a static +1 AC, keeping you alive in the frontline. At Level 3, you take your Oath of Devotion, gaining your most important tool: Sacred Weapon. This Bonus Action buff adds your +2 Charisma modifier to your attack rolls. You also get your first Oath Spells: Command and Sanctuary. Use Command to force enemies to 'Grovel', grouping them up perfectly for your Dragonborn Breath Weapon. At Level 4, take the Great Weapon Master feat. Sacred Weapon's accuracy boost mathematically solves the -5 penalty, letting you spam +10 damage attacks with near impunity.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings Extra Attack and 2nd-level spells like Find Steed. If you chose a Gem Dragonborn lineage, you also unlock Draconic Flight here, letting you bypass the frontline and dive the enemy backline. Level 6 grants Aura of Protection, adding your +2 CHA to all saves. Level 7 is a massive defensive spike with Aura of Devotion. Passive immunity to the Charmed condition for anyone within 10 feet of you trivializes encounters against fey and fiends. At Level 8, take an Ability Score Improvement for +2 Strength (bringing you to 17) to scale your baseline accuracy and damage. Level 9 unlocks 3rd-level Oath spells, including Beacon of Hope, which maximizes all healing your party receives.

Levels 11-16

Level 11 grants Improved Divine Smite, adding a free 1d8 radiant damage to every swing. Combined with Great Weapon Master and Sacred Weapon, your DPR skyrockets. At Level 12, take +2 Charisma to boost your Auras and your Sacred Weapon attack bonus. Level 15 introduces Smite of Protection, a phenomenal reaction ability. Instead of hoarding your Lay on Hands pool for out-of-combat healing, you can now burn it as a Reaction to halve incoming damage on an ally within 30 feet. This cements your role as the ultimate Defender. At Level 16, round out your stats or take the Sentinel feat to lock enemies inside your protective Auras.

Levels 17-20

Level 17 grants 5th-level spells like Destructive Wave, giving you a massive AoE nuke to complement your Breath Weapon. Level 18 expands your Aura of Devotion and Aura of Protection to 30 feet, effectively covering the entire party in most dungeon rooms. Finally, Level 20 unlocks your capstone: Holy Nimbus. As an action, you radiate 30 feet of bright light, granting allies Advantage on saving throws and punishing enemies who dare enter your space. It is the ultimate boss-fight transformation.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Unless you take the Blessed Warrior fighting style (which you shouldn't, as you need Defense for frontline survival), you will not have cantrips. Rely on your Breath Weapon for your resource-free AoE needs.

Level 1-2 Spells

Your Oath gives you Command and Sanctuary for free. Command is an incredible scaling spell; upcasting it to hit multiple targets wastes enemy turns. Cast Shield of Faith for tough fights to hit 21+ AC. At 2nd level, your Oath grants Zone of Truth and Lesser Restoration. Keep Find Steed active at all times for extra mobility when your Draconic Flight isn't available.

Level 3-5 Spells

At 3rd level, your Oath gives you Beacon of Hope and Dispel Magic. Dispel Magic is mandatory for any party, and having it always prepared saves a headache. Cast Aura of Vitality between combats to heal the party for 20d6. At 4th level, Find Greater Steed gives you a flying mount like a Griffon. At 5th level, Banishing Smite adds 5d10 force damage and can instantly remove an enemy with under 50 hit points from the fight.

High-Level Spells

You max out at 5th-level spell slots. Destructive Wave is your ultimate crowd control, dealing 10d6 damage and knocking enemies prone without friendly fire. Use it when your Breath Weapon runs out of uses.

Recommended Feats

Great Weapon Master

Take this at Level 4. Normally, taking a -5 to hit on a Paladin is risky because you don't have natural ways to gain Advantage like a Barbarian's Reckless Attack. However, Sacred Weapon adds your Charisma modifier to your attack rolls for 10 minutes. This completely offsets the accuracy penalty, allowing you to deal +10 damage on every hit while glowing with holy light.

Sentinel

Take this at Level 12 or 16. As a Defender, your job is to keep enemies near you so they stay inside your Aura of Devotion and Aura of Protection. Sentinel stops retreating enemies dead in their tracks, forcing them to deal with your d10 hit die and heavy armor rather than your squishy Wizard.

Inspiring Leader

Take this if you find yourself with an odd Charisma score. You already prioritize Charisma for Sacred Weapon and your Auras. Spending 10 minutes giving a speech before delving into a dungeon translates to a massive pool of temporary hit points for the entire party, drastically reducing the need for mid-combat healing.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Start with Chain Mail and a Greatsword. Your goal is to get Splint or Plate Armor as soon as you can afford it. Carry a few Javelins for ranged options when your Draconic Flight or Breath Weapon aren't available.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Acquire Plate Armor (AC 18). Seek out a +1 Greatsword to stack with your Sacred Weapon bonus. Keep an eye out for an Amulet of the Devout +1; this boosts your spell save DC (making your Command spell harder to resist) and gives you a free use of your Channel Divinity, meaning you can activate Sacred Weapon twice per short rest.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Look for a Belt of Fire Giant Strength. Setting your Strength to 25 means you can start pouring all your Ability Score Improvements into Charisma, maximizing your Auras and Sacred Weapon bonus simultaneously. A Flame Tongue Greatsword stacks beautifully with Improved Divine Smite for massive dice rolling.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

The ultimate goal is a Holy Avenger Greatsword. It provides a +3 bonus to hit and damage, deals extra radiant damage to fiends/undead, and extends a spell resistance aura that stacks absurdly well with your Aura of Protection and Aura of Devotion. Your party will be virtually immune to magic.

Party Composition

As a Dragonborn Oath of Devotion Paladin, your primary role is Defender. You want to stand directly in front of the party, using your heavy armor and Smite of Protection to absorb and mitigate damage, while your Aura of Devotion blankets your allies in charm immunity.

You pair exceptionally well with squishy arcane casters like Wizards and Sorcerers. Because your Aura of Devotion prevents allies from being Charmed, an allied Wizard can safely cast Hypnotic Pattern centered directly on you. The enemies will be paralyzed by the spell, but you and any allies within 10 feet will completely ignore the effect.

You also synergize perfectly with Clerics. A Cleric casting Spirit Guardians can stand right behind you. With your Aura of Protection buffing their concentration saves and Sentinel keeping enemies locked inside the radiant damage zone, you create a terrifying blender of divine magic.

Multiclass Options

Divine Soul Sorcerer 1-4

A small dip into Sorcerer gives you access to the Shield and Absorb Elements spells, pushing your defensive capabilities into the stratosphere. Divine Soul specifically gives you Favored by the Gods, adding 2d4 to a failed saving throw—making you practically immune to failing crucial saves when stacked with Aura of Protection.

Hexblade Warlock 1-2

While the infamous "Hexadin" is popular, it is slightly less necessary for Devotion Paladins because Sacred Weapon already lets you apply Charisma to your weapon attacks (stacking with Strength). However, taking one level for Hexblade's Curse gives you expanded crit range, doubling your chances to land a devastating critical Divine Smite.

Common Pitfalls

  • Clashing Bonus Actions: Sacred Weapon takes a Bonus Action to activate. Many Paladins make the mistake of trying to cast Shield of Faith or Thunderous Smite on turn one. You must prioritize Sacred Weapon first to get your accuracy online for Great Weapon Master.
  • Forgetting Passive Aura Effects: Aura of Devotion doesn't just grant Advantage; it completely ends the Charmed condition on an ally if they enter the aura. Do not waste a Lesser Restoration spell on a charmed ally—just walk up to them.
  • Hoarding Lay on Hands: Once you hit Level 15, do not save your entire Lay on Hands pool for reviving downed allies. Smite of Protection lets you burn it as a Reaction to halve incoming damage. Preventing a massive hit on your Wizard is better than healing them after they drop.
  • Attacking under Sanctuary: Your Oath grants Sanctuary at Level 3. If you cast it on yourself and then attack with your Greatsword, the spell immediately breaks. Use it strictly on the squishy healer or an escort NPC.

More Questions

Does Sacred Weapon stack with magical weapon bonuses?
Yes. Sacred Weapon adds your Charisma modifier to the attack roll of the imbued weapon. If you are wielding a +1 Greatsword, you gain the +1 from the weapon, your Strength modifier, your Proficiency Bonus, AND your Charisma modifier.
Can Aura of Devotion prevent a Vampire's charm?
Absolutely. Aura of Devotion prevents anyone within 10 feet of you from being Charmed. A Vampire's Charm action inflicts the Charmed condition, meaning you and your nearby allies are completely immune to their mind control.
Does Smite of Protection use my actual Reaction?
Yes. The Level 15 Smite of Protection feature explicitly requires you to spend your Reaction to halve the triggering damage. This means you cannot use it in the same round you make an Opportunity Attack.
Can I use Divine Smite on my Breath Weapon?
No. Divine Smite explicitly requires a 'melee weapon attack'. The Dragonborn's Breath Weapon forces a saving throw and does not involve an attack roll, so you cannot channel smites through your elemental breath.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oath of Devotion a good subclass for Dragonborn Paladin?
Yes, Dragonborn is an incredible species for an Oath of Devotion Paladin, earning a 10/10 synergy rating. The martial focus of the Devotion Paladin leaves them lacking in area-of-effect damage, which the Dragonborn's Breath Weapon perfectly solves. Furthermore, Draconic Resistance bolsters your Defender role.
What makes Oath of Devotion different from other Paladin subclasses?
A Dragonborn Devotion Paladin should prioritize Strength and Charisma. Start with STR 15, DEX 10, CON 13, INT 8, WIS 12, and CHA 14. You need high Strength for your heavy weapons, and a 14 Charisma ensures your Sacred Weapon feature provides a solid +2 to hit at early levels.
