Why Life Domain?

The Dwarf Life Domain Cleric is the quintessential combat medic, offering a solid 6/10 synergy rating that focuses purely on attrition and survival. While other Cleric subclasses lean into blasting or utility, the Life Domain excels at action economy efficiency. Because features like Disciple of Life and Blessed Healer make your healing spells exponentially more effective, you spend fewer spell slots keeping your party alive and more slots casting encounter-ending spells like Spirit Guardians.

Dwarven traits turn this build from a squishy backline healer into an absolute frontline bulwark. Dwarven Toughness provides a free hit point every level, scaling your HP to a massive 105 by level 17. Combined with Dwarven Resilience granting resistance to common poison damage, you can comfortably wade into melee range. This is critical, because your Preserve Life Channel Divinity requires you to be within 30 feet of your targets, putting you directly in the line of fire.

With a starting array of STR 14, DEX 8, CON 13, and WIS 15, you are built to wear heavy armor and ignore your terrible Dexterity score. Your goal isn't to deal massive burst damage—your melee DPR at level 5 is a miserable 3.9—but rather to become an immovable object that ensures the rest of your party never drops to zero hit points.

Life Domain Features

Disciple of Life

Level 3

When you cast a spell with a spell slot that restores Hit Points to a creature, add your Wisdom modifier to the amount of Hit Points restored.

Life Domain Spells

Level 3

Your connection to this divine domain ensures that you always have certain spells prepared.

Preserve Life

Level 3

As an action, you present your Holy Symbol and draw on divine magic to mend wounds. You can restore a number of Hit Points equal to five times your Cleric level. You can distribute these Hit Points among any number of creatures you can see within 30 feet of you. A creature can't regain Hit Points from this feature if it has 0 Hit Points.

Blessed Healer

Level 6

The healing spells you cast on others heal you as well. When you cast a spell with a spell slot that restores Hit Points to a creature other than you, you regain Hit Points equal to 2 + the spell's level.

Supreme Healing

Level 17

When you would roll one or more dice to restore Hit Points to a creature with a spell, you instead use the highest number possible for each die. For example, instead of restoring 2d6 Hit Points to a creature, you restore 12.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with heavy armor and a shield to patch up your terrible 8 Dexterity. At level 3, your subclass comes online. Disciple of Life instantly makes Healing Word the most efficient bonus action in the game, adding your Wisdom modifier to the heal. You also gain Preserve Life, allowing you to pump out 15 hit points as an action. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat. This bumps your 15 Wisdom to a 16, and gives you Misty Step—crucial for a Dwarf with 25-foot movement trying to get into position for a clutch Cure Wounds.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings 3rd-level spells, specifically Spirit Guardians. Your game plan now is to cast Spirit Guardians, dodge, and heal. At level 6, you unlock Blessed Healer. This is a massive survivability spike; whenever you cast Healing Word on an ally, you heal them for 1d4 + WIS + Disciple of Life, AND you heal yourself for 3 HP (2 + 1st level slot). At level 8, use your Ability Score Improvement to bump your Wisdom to 18, increasing both your spell save DC and your Disciple of Life bonus.

Levels 11-16

At level 11, your hit points jump to 69 thanks to Dwarven Toughness. You now have access to 6th-level spells like Heal, which completely revitalizes a frontliner. At level 12, take your final Wisdom ASI to reach 20. Your spell DPR reaches a respectable 10.18, so rely exclusively on cantrips rather than weapons. At level 16, grab Resilient (Constitution) to bump your 13 CON to a 14 and secure proficiency in Concentration saves for your high-level buffs.

Levels 17-20

At level 17, the Life Domain masterpiece unlocks: Supreme Healing. You no longer roll dice for healing spells. A 5th-level Mass Cure Wounds automatically heals every ally in a 30-foot radius for 24 HP (max 3d8) + 5 (WIS) + 7 (Disciple of Life) = 36 HP, while triggering Blessed Healer to top you off for 7 HP. You are now the ultimate safety net for your party.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Take Toll the Dead and Sacred Flame. Your melee DPR is abysmal (3.9 at level 5), so you must rely on cantrips for damage. Grab Guidance for out-of-combat utility, as your Dwarf Darkvision allows you to easily guide your rogue through unlit dungeons.

Level 1-2 Spells

Healing Word is mandatory; thanks to Disciple of Life, a 1st-level cast heals 1d4 + WIS + 3, making it incredibly potent. Bless is your go-to concentration spell at early levels. Spiritual Weapon provides a reliable bonus action attack when you don't need to heal.

Level 3-5 Spells

Spirit Guardians defines your mid-tier combat. Because Dwarven Toughness gives you the HP to survive melee, you should cast this and stand on the frontline. Mass Healing Word is incredible for the Life Domain; it heals the whole party and instantly triggers Blessed Healer to heal you as well. Revivify is non-negotiable for any Cleric.

High-Level Spells

Heal is fantastic at 6th level, though it doesn't roll dice so it doesn't benefit from Supreme Healing. Mass Heal at 9th level is the ultimate reset button, easily bringing an entire party from the brink of death to full health in a single action.

Recommended Feats

Fey Touched

Take this at level 4. Your starting Wisdom is 15, and this rounds it to 16. More importantly, Dwarves suffer from low mobility. Misty Step allows you to teleport 30 feet to reach an ally who is bleeding out just outside of your Preserve Life range.

War Caster

Essential for any Cleric planning to wade into melee with Spirit Guardians. Since you have a shield in one hand and a warhammer in the other (even if you rarely swing it), War Caster lets you perform somatic components for clutch heals without dropping your gear.

Resilient (Constitution)

With a starting CON of 13, this feat is perfect for your level 12 or 16 ASI. It rounds your Constitution to 14 for an extra HP per level (stacking beautifully with Dwarven Toughness) and gives you proficiency in Constitution saves to protect your concentration.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Secure Heavy Armor (Chain Mail) and a Shield immediately. With your 14 Strength, you meet the requirements, though as a Dwarf your speed wouldn't be reduced anyway. Keep a Holy Symbol emblazoned on your shield to cast your Life Domain Spells.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Upgrade to Plate Armor. Seek out an Amulet of the Devout +1. This boosts your spell save DC for Spirit Guardians and grants an extra use of Channel Divinity, meaning you can use Preserve Life one more time per day to save your party.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Look for a Devotee's Censer. This flail allows you to release a healing incense. While it doesn't trigger your subclass spellcasting features, it perfectly fits the theme of area-of-effect healing. Upgrade to an Amulet of the Devout +2.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

A Rod of Resurrection is the ultimate capstone item for a Life Cleric. Pair it with a +3 Shield and +3 Plate Armor. By this tier, your AC should be untouchable, allowing you to freely utilize Supreme Healing without fear of being burst down.

Party Composition

As a Life Domain Cleric, your party role is pure Support and Tank. Because Blessed Healer rewards you for healing others by healing yourself, you thrive in a party with dedicated, reckless frontliners. You want allies who take a lot of damage so you can maximize your feature efficiency.

Pathfinder Barbarians or Oath of Vengeance Paladins are your best friends. They will charge into the fray and soak up aggro. You follow right behind them with Spirit Guardians active, using your Preserve Life Channel Divinity to keep them on their feet while punishing any enemies caught in your aura.

You also pair exceptionally well with squishy arcane casters like Evocation Wizards. When an enemy inevitably bypasses the frontline and drops your Wizard, your Disciple of Life boosted Healing Word brings them back up with enough buffer HP to survive the next round's glancing blows.

Multiclass Options

Druid 1 Dip

The infamous "Lifeberry" build. Taking one level of Druid grants you the Goodberry spell. Because Disciple of Life applies whenever you cast a spell that restores hit points, each of the 10 berries heals for 1 + 2 + 1 = 4 hit points. That's 40 points of guaranteed out-of-combat healing for a 1st-level spell slot.

Fighter 2 Dip

Action Surge is incredible on a Cleric. It allows you to cast Spirit Guardians and use your Preserve Life Channel Divinity on the exact same turn. You also gain the Defense fighting style, stacking +1 AC onto your heavy armor to make you even harder to hit.

Common Pitfalls

  • Over-healing in combat: Don't try to keep everyone at maximum HP. Disciple of Life is efficient, but spending your action casting Cure Wounds every turn wastes your potential. Cast Spirit Guardians and only heal when allies are critically low.
  • Forgetting Blessed Healer's self-sustain: You do not need to cast healing spells on yourself. Blessed Healer triggers when you heal allies, so target your Fighter with Healing Word to naturally top off your own HP pool.
  • Swinging your weapon: Your 14 Strength is fine for carrying gear, but your level 5 melee DPR is a pathetic 3.9. Use Toll the Dead (7.8 DPR) instead of swinging a warhammer.
  • Hoarding Preserve Life: The 2024 rules allow you to distribute 5 times your Cleric level in HP among any number of creatures. Don't wait until everyone is dying; use Preserve Life to swing the tempo of a tough fight early.

More Questions

Does Disciple of Life work with Goodberry?
Yes, traditionally this is one of the strongest synergies in the game. Because Disciple of Life triggers when you use a spell slot to cast a healing spell, each berry produced by Goodberry heals for 4 HP instead of 1, yielding 40 HP per 1st-level slot.
When should I use Preserve Life?
Use Preserve Life when multiple party members have taken heavy area-of-effect damage. Since it restores a pool of HP equal to 5 times your Cleric level (e.g., 30 HP at level 6) and can be distributed freely, it is your best tool to recover from dragon breath or fireball attacks.
Does Supreme Healing maximize Blessed Healer?
No. Supreme Healing only maximizes the dice rolled to restore hit points to a creature. Blessed Healer provides a flat mathematical formula (2 + spell level) with no dice rolled, so it is unaffected by Supreme Healing at level 17.
Should I use Cure Wounds or Healing Word?
Always prioritize Healing Word in combat. Thanks to Disciple of Life, the lower dice value of Healing Word is offset by your flat modifiers, allowing you to pick up downed allies while keeping your action free to dodge or cast cantrips.
