With a synergy rating of 4/10, the Gnome Bard isn't winning any optimization pageants out of the box, largely due to the awkward stat spread that leaves you with an odd 15 Charisma and a mathematically inefficient 13 Intelligence. However, if you look past the raw numbers, the Gnome provides a defensive package that Bards desperately need. Bards are primary spellcasters who live and die by their concentration checks, and they lack native proficiency in Wisdom or Intelligence saving throws. Enter Gnomish Cunning. Rolling with advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic means you will casually shrug off Hold Person and Dominate Person—spells that would normally shut down your support pipeline.
Because your DPR is mathematically abysmal (topping out at an embarrassing 3.58 in melee at level 11), you must abandon any illusions of being a weapon-wielding skirmisher. You are a full-time support caster and battlefield controller. To maximize the Gnome's natural inclination toward Intelligence, take the College of Lore. This subclass turns that strange 13 INT into a genuine asset by letting you dominate Arcana, History, and Religion checks via Jack of All Trades and bonus proficiencies. More importantly, Lore Bard gives you Cutting Words, a reaction that weaponizes your Charisma to protect your allies, keeping you safely out of melee where your 25-foot walking speed belongs.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with your 15 Charisma and 14 Dexterity to maximize your AC in Studded Leather. At level 3, immediately lock in the College of Lore. You gain three bonus skill proficiencies—take Arcana, History, and Perception. You also get Cutting Words, allowing you to subtract your Bardic Inspiration die (1d6) from an enemy's attack roll. At level 4, you must fix your odd Charisma score. Take the Fey Touched feat, boosting your Charisma to 16. This grants you a free cast of Misty Step—crucial for escaping melee since your Gnome speed is only 25 feet—and Silvery Barbs to force devastating rerolls on enemy saving throws.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Font of Inspiration, meaning your Cutting Words now recharge on a short rest. Your Bardic Inspiration also scales to a d8. At level 6, Lore Bards get Additional Magical Secrets. Take Counterspell (Jack of All Trades applies to the ability check) and Aura of Vitality for massive out-of-combat healing. At level 8, use your Ability Score Improvement to bump Charisma from 16 to 18, increasing your spell save DC and giving you an extra use of Bardic Inspiration. Do not get distracted by feats here; you need that DC as high as possible for your control spells.
Levels 11-16
At level 11, your spell DPR crawls to a pathetic 10.18. Ignore it. You are casting 6th-level spells like Mass Suggestion now. Level 12 demands your final Charisma ASI, capping it at 20. At level 14, Magical Secrets unlocks again; grab Heal from the Cleric list and Wall of Force from the Wizard list to instantly compartmentalize encounters. At level 16, take Resilient (Constitution). You already have advantage on mental saves from Gnomish Cunning; adding proficiency to Constitution saving throws makes your concentration nearly unbreakable.
Levels 17-20
At level 17, you unlock 9th-level spells. Take Foresight to give an ally advantage on everything for 8 hours. At level 18, your final Magical Secrets should secure Wish and Maze. Maze is particularly lethal because it doesn't require a saving throw, completely bypassing legendary resistances. Your final ASI at level 19 should be Tough. With your meager 12 Constitution, your HP sits at a fragile 105 at level 17; Tough pads this out, ensuring you survive late-game AoE breath weapons.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Take Vicious Mockery and Minor Illusion. Forest Gnomes get Minor Illusion for free, so if you went that route, grab Mage Hand instead. Vicious Mockery's damage is negligible, but imposing disadvantage on an attack roll is excellent support.
Level 1-2 Spells
At 1st level, Healing Word is mandatory to pick up downed allies as a bonus action, and Dissonant Whispers is your best offensive tool, forcing enemies to provoke opportunity attacks from your frontline. At 2nd level, grab Shatter for AoE damage and Invisibility, which pairs beautifully with Gnome Darkvision for scouting.
Level 3-5 Spells
At 3rd level, Hypnotic Pattern is your encounter-ending bread and butter. At 4th level, take Polymorph to turn your 1 HP Fighter into a Giant Ape. At 5th level, Synaptic Static acts as a non-concentration Fireball that also debuffs enemy attack rolls, targeting Intelligence saves which monsters notoriously fail.
High-Level Spells
At 7th level, take Forcecage. It requires no concentration and traps enemies instantly. At 8th level, grab Mind Blank to immunize yourself or your main martial ally to psychic damage and charm effects. At 9th level, Foresight is the ultimate buff spell, essentially breaking the game's math in your party's favor.
Recommended Feats
Fey Touched
Take this exactly at level 4. With an optimal starting Charisma of 15, this half-feat rounds you up to a 16 (+3 modifier). More importantly, the Gnome's 25-foot walking speed makes you vulnerable to being cornered. Misty Step gives you a flawless bonus-action escape hatch, and Silvery Barbs eats enemy critical hits.
Resilient (Constitution)
Take this at level 16. Gnomish Cunning gives you advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saves against magic, meaning your mental defenses are rock solid. However, taking damage forces Constitution saves to maintain concentration on spells like Hypnotic Pattern. Gaining proficiency in CON saves plugs your last major defensive hole.
Inspiring Leader
If you find yourself surviving easily and don't need Resilient at level 16, take Inspiring Leader instead. With a 20 Charisma, you will hand out massive amounts of temporary hit points to your entire party after every short rest. It mathematically outpaces most healing spells over an adventuring day.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Start with Studded Leather armor and a shield (if you multiclassed; otherwise, keep a hand free). Grab a Wand of Magic Detection. As a Gnome Lore Bard with a 13 Intelligence and Arcana proficiency, you are the party's magical investigator. Sell your starting rapier; you will never use it.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +1. This instantly boosts your spell save DC and gives you an extra use of Bardic Inspiration as an action. You should also look for a Cloak of Protection to stack with your 14 Dexterity, keeping your AC respectable against mid-tier attack rolls.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Upgrade to a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +2. At this tier, you want an Instrument of the Bards (Canaith Mandolin). It imposes disadvantage on saving throws against your charm spells (making Hypnotic Pattern devastating) and lets you cast Protection from Energy, Fly, and Cure Wounds for free.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Your holy grail is the Tome of Leadership and Influence. Reading this bumps your Charisma score to 22, pushing your spell save DC into the stratosphere. Pair this with a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +3, and enemies will consistently fail their saves against your Forcecage and Maze.
Party Composition
As a Gnome Lore Bard, your role is pure Support and Battlefield Control. You have terrible AC, low HP (33 at level 5), and short legs. You desperately need a dedicated frontline to keep enemies away from you. A Path of the Totem Warrior (Bear) Barbarian or an Oath of Devotion Paladin makes the perfect anvil to your hammer. They lock down the choke points while you sit comfortably in the backline casting Hypnotic Pattern.
You also pair exceptionally well with a School of Evocation Wizard or a Rogue. If you cast Dissonant Whispers on a target engaged with your Rogue, the target's forced movement will trigger an Opportunity Attack, allowing the Rogue to apply Sneak Attack a second time in the same round. The Wizard handles the raw AoE damage that your Bard list lacks, while you handle the buffs and debuffs.
Multiclass Options
Hexblade Warlock 2
Taking two levels of Hexblade completely fixes your miserable 3.9/7.8 DPR. You gain Eldritch Blast and the Agonizing Blast invocation, giving you competitive, resource-free damage that scales with your character level. You also gain proficiency with medium armor and shields, immediately boosting your AC to 19 (Half Plate + Shield + 14 DEX).
Order Domain Cleric 1
A single-level dip grants you heavy armor proficiency (though your 8 Strength means your 25ft Gnome speed drops to 15ft unless you stick to medium armor, which you should). The real prize is Voice of Authority. Whenever you cast a leveled spell on an ally (like a bonus action Healing Word), they can instantly use their reaction to make a weapon attack. It turns your healing into raw DPR.
Common Pitfalls
- Using a Rapier: Your melee DPR at level 5 is 3.9. Never take the Attack action. Use Vicious Mockery, cast a leveled spell, or take the Dodge action. Your weapon is for decoration.
- Hoarding Bardic Inspiration: Once you hit level 5, Font of Inspiration returns all your dice on a short rest. Use Cutting Words aggressively in every encounter to mitigate damage before it happens.
- Forgetting Gnomish Cunning's Limit: Your racial advantage applies to INT, WIS, and CHA saves against magic. It will not help you against a Dragon's Frightful Presence or a non-magical poison trap. Know the difference.
- Ignoring your 13 Intelligence: Bards usually dump INT, but your optimal stats put it at 13. Combined with Jack of All Trades and Lore Bard proficiencies, you are excellent at Arcana checks. Don't let the Wizard monopolize the lore drops.
