Top Subclass Picks for Goliath Monk

The subclass you pick at level 3 defines the rest of your character. Here are the top picks for this build:

Why Goliath Monk?

Let's be brutally honest: a Goliath Monk sits at a painfully low 3/10 synergy rating for a reason. While the updated Goliath species traits give you floating ability scores, the core chassis of a Monk fundamentally clashes with the Goliath's hulking fantasy. You want to be a massive brawler, but the Monk class demands finesse, forcing you to pump Dexterity to 15 and Wisdom to 14 while leaving your Strength at a mediocre 12.

However, you can salvage this build by leaning entirely into the Goliath's defensive and spatial advantages. Monks are notoriously squishy strikers. By selecting the Stone Giant ancestry, you gain a reaction-based damage reduction (1d12 + Constitution modifier) that scales with your proficiency bonus. When an enemy pierces your low Tier 1 Armor Class, popping Stone's Endurance keeps you conscious so you can deliver a Hands of Harm strike on your next turn.

Furthermore, the Goliath's Large Form trait gives you a unique tactical niche. While expanding to Large size doesn't increase your Unarmed Strike damage dice, it transforms your Monk into a 10-by-10 foot roadblock. Combine this spatial control with the Way of Mercy subclass to create a massive, self-healing bouncer that controls dungeon chokepoints and punishes anyone trying to squeeze past you to reach your spellcasters.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with a 15 Dexterity, 14 Wisdom, and 13 Constitution. You are a striker, but your AC is only 14, so position carefully. At Level 3, lock in the Way of Mercy subclass. Hands of Harm provides guaranteed necrotic damage on a hit, which is desperately needed to fix your abysmal 7.8 DPR at this tier. At Level 4, skip a feat and take the Ability Score Improvement: +1 Dexterity and +1 Constitution. This bumps your modifiers to +3 Dex and +2 Con, immediately raising your AC, Unarmed Strike attack rolls, and Stone's Endurance mitigation.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings Extra Attack and Stunning Strike. Because your Wisdom is only 14, your Stunning Strike DC is a low 13—don't waste all your Ki on it. Instead, use your Ki for Hands of Harm or Flurry of Blows. Level 5 also unlocks your Goliath Large Form trait. Use this when fighting in 10-foot wide corridors to physically block enemies. At Level 8, take a +2 Dexterity ASI to reach 18 Dex. Your damage needs this bump, and it brings your AC to 16.

Levels 11-16

At Level 11, Way of Mercy grants Flurry of Healing and Harm, allowing you to deal extra necrotic damage and heal an ally simultaneously without spending extra Ki. This is your peak subclass feature. At Level 12, take your final +2 Dexterity ASI to cap it at 20. Your Unarmed Strikes now hit with a +9, and your baseline AC hits 17. At Level 16, start pumping Wisdom with a +2 ASI, raising your AC to 18 and finally making your Stunning Strike DC respectable for Tier 3.

Levels 17-20

Level 17 unlocks Hand of Ultimate Mercy, giving you a pseudo-resurrection ability that only costs 5 Ki points. Level 18 is the Monk's crown jewel: Empty Body. For 4 Ki points, you gain invisibility and resistance to all damage but force. When you stack Empty Body's resistance with the Goliath's Stone's Endurance reaction, you become virtually unkillable by physical attacks. At Level 19, take another +2 Wisdom ASI to hit 18 Wisdom.

Recommended Feats

Mobile

Take Mobile if you find yourself burning too much Ki on Step of the Wind to escape melee. The Goliath Monk wants to hit and run, but you lack the Cloud Giant teleport if you opted for Stone Giant durability. Mobile gives you a free disengage against targets you attack, letting you preserve your Ki for Hands of Harm.

Crusher

If you prefer to keep your Ability Scores odd early on, taking Crusher at level 4 (+1 Constitution) allows you to push enemies 5 feet with your bludgeoning Unarmed Strikes. This pairs exceptionally well with your Large Form, letting you physically bully enemies away from squishy allies without triggering opportunity attacks.

Tough

The Monk's d8 hit die is a massive liability in melee. By Tier 3, taking Tough adds an extra 2 HP per level. When combined with your +2 Constitution modifier and Stone's Endurance, Tough gives you the effective hit point pool of a Fighter, allowing you to absorb punishment while maintaining your frontline striker role.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Ditch the simple weapons as soon as possible and rely on a Quarterstaff wielded in two hands for 1d8 bludgeoning damage. Carry Darts for emergencies when your 30-foot speed isn't enough to reach an enemy. Don't bother with armor; your Unarmored Defense is strictly better.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Seek out an Eldritch Claw Tattoo or Wraps of Unarmed Clarity (+1). You need magical Unarmed Strikes before Level 6, and the +1 to attack and damage rolls is vital for keeping your DPR relevant. A pair of Bracers of Defense is also mandatory, pushing your AC from 16 to 18.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

The Dragonhide Belt (+2) is your best friend. It directly increases your Ki save DC (making Stunning Strike viable despite your 14 Wisdom) and allows you to recover Ki points as an action. A Cloak of Displacement is excellent for layering defensive miss chances over your Stone's Endurance.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

Upgrade to a Dragonhide Belt (+3) to maximize your Hand of Ultimate Mercy and Stunning Strike DCs. A Blood Fury Tattoo is the ultimate endgame striker item, adding 4d6 necrotic damage to your strikes and healing you—stacking beautifully with Way of Mercy's natural healing.

Party Composition

As a Goliath Monk, your primary role is a Striker with off-tank capabilities. Because your damage output is inherently lower than a Fighter or Paladin, you need a heavy hitter in the party. Pair this build with a Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian. The Barbarian imposes disadvantage on attacks against you, and if a hit sneaks through, you use Stone's Endurance to shrug off the damage.

You also desperately need a buffer who can enhance your survivability. A Twilight Domain Cleric is the perfect partner. Their Twilight Sanctuary grants you temporary hit points every round. Temporary hit points absorb damage before you even need to trigger Stone's Endurance, allowing you to save your Goliath reaction for devastating critical hits.

Multiclass Options

Fighter 2 Dip

Taking two levels of Fighter grants the Unarmed Fighting Style, bumping your fists to a d8 immediately (though this becomes redundant at Monk level 5). More importantly, Action Surge lets you double your attacks for a massive nova round, potentially applying Hands of Harm multiple times if you have the Ki to support it.

Cleric 1 Dip (Peace Domain)

A single level of Peace Cleric gives you Emboldening Bond, adding a 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws. This perfectly offsets the Monk's delayed ASI progression. You also gain access to the Shield of Faith spell, which you can cast to boost your AC by +2, mitigating your mediocre base Dexterity and Wisdom stats.

Common Pitfalls

  • Investing in Strength: Players see "Goliath" and want to pump Strength for grappling. Do not do this. You are a Monk. You need Dexterity to hit and Wisdom for your AC. Leave Strength at 12.
  • Spamming Stunning Strike early: With a 14 Wisdom at level 5, your Ki save DC is too low. Wasting 3 Ki points to fail three stuns will leave you helpless. Spend Ki on Hands of Harm instead.
  • Assuming Large Form increases reach: Activating your Goliath Large Form makes you take up a 10x10 space, but it does NOT grant you 10-foot reach. You still have to end your movement adjacent to enemies to flurry them.
  • Wasting Stone's Endurance on chip damage: Don't use your reaction to reduce a 4-damage goblin arrow. Save it for the Frost Giant's greataxe swing that deals 25 damage, maximizing the 1d12+Con reduction.

More Questions

Which Giant Ancestry is best for a Monk?
Stone Giant is optimal. Monks have high mobility but low AC and HP. Stone's Endurance allows you to reduce incoming damage by 1d12 + Con modifier, keeping your d8 hit die chassis alive when you are caught in melee.
Does Large Form increase my Unarmed Strike damage?
No. In D&D 5e, increasing your size to Large via the Goliath trait does not add extra damage dice to your Unarmed Strikes or Monk weapons. It only expands the space you control on the grid.
Should I grapple enemies while Large?
Only if you take the Way of the Astral Self subclass. Standard Monks dump Strength, making your Athletics checks terrible even with advantage. Astral Self allows you to use Wisdom for grappling checks, perfectly synergizing with Large Form.
How do I fix my low damage output?
Choose the Way of Mercy subclass. Hands of Harm adds guaranteed necrotic damage (1d4 + Wis modifier) to an Unarmed Strike for 1 Ki point. This bypasses attack rolls for the extra damage, stabilizing your low Tier 1 DPR.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Flexible build with room for customization

Weaknesses

  • Low Charisma limits social interactions
  • Limited ranged and magical options without multiclassing
  • No Darkvision — may need light sources in dungeons

Pro Tips

1

Use Large Form in 10-foot corridors to physically block enemies from reaching your casters.

2

Save Stone's Endurance for critical hits; let your Unarmored Defense handle the weak attacks.

3

Take +1 Dex / +1 Con at Level 4 to immediately boost your AC and damage reduction.

4

Rely on Hands of Harm for damage rather than wasting Ki on low-DC Stunning Strikes.

5

Combine Empty Body at level 18 with Stone's Endurance to become practically immune to physical bursts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Goliath a good race for Monk?
With a synergy rating of 3/10, Goliath is mechanically weak for a Monk. The Monk class requires high Dexterity and Wisdom, which doesn't naturally fit the Goliath's bruiser fantasy. However, the Stone Giant ancestry's reaction-based damage reduction perfectly patches the Monk's squishy d8 hit die.
What stats should a Goliath Monk prioritize?
A Goliath Monk must prioritize Dexterity and Wisdom above all else. Start with 15 Dexterity, 14 Wisdom, and 13 Constitution. Leave Strength at 12; even though you have Powerful Build, Unarmed Strikes rely on Dexterity for scaling and accuracy.
What party role does this build fill?
The Goliath Monk fills the Striker role. As a martial build, this combination excels in direct combat and physical challenges.
