Why College of Lore?

As a Human College of Lore Bard, you are the ultimate jack-of-all-trades, mastering both spellcasting and skill checks. The College of Lore focuses on battlefield control and unmatched utility. By combining your Human Skillful trait with the Bard's natural talents and the subclass's Bonus Proficiencies at level 3, you will have more skill proficiencies than almost any other character, making you incredibly useful both in and out of combat.

Your primary role in the party is a Controller. This means you shape the battlefield using your high Charisma of 15 to cast spells that confuse, weaken, or lock down enemies. When foes manage to break through, you can use your Cutting Words feature to subtract your Bardic Inspiration roll from their attack rolls or damage, keeping your allies safe. Meanwhile, the Human's Versatile trait grants you a free Origin feat at level 1, allowing you to boost your defense or spellcasting power right from the start.

As you level up, features like Magical Discoveries allow you to steal spells from other classes, cementing your status as a versatile magical powerhouse. With your high Charisma and the Human's Resourceful trait granting you Heroic Inspiration for crucial rerolls, you will always have a trick up your sleeve.

College of Lore Features

Bonus Proficiencies

Level 3

You gain proficiency with three skills of your choice.

Cutting Words

Level 3

You learn to use your wit to distract, confuse, and otherwise sap the confidence of others. When a creature you can see within 60 feet of you makes an attack roll, ability check, or damage roll, you can use your Reaction to spend one of your Bardic Inspiration dice and subtract the number rolled from the creature's roll. You can choose to use this feature after the creature rolls but before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. A creature can't be affected by this feature if the creature can't hear you.

Magical Discoveries

Level 6

You learn two spells of your choice. These spells can be from any class's spell list. Each spell counts as a Bard spell for you but doesn't count against the number of Bard spells you know.

Peerless Skill

Level 14

When you make an ability check or attack roll and fail, you can spend one of your Bardic Inspiration dice, roll it, and add the number rolled to the ability check or attack roll, potentially turning failure into success.
