Why Circle of the Land?

As a Circle of the Land Druid, your main job is to control the battlefield, locking down enemies and supporting your allies with powerful nature magic. Choosing the Human species gives you an incredible head start. Thanks to the Human's Versatile trait, you gain a free Origin feat at level one. This lets you boost your spellcasting or defenses early on, which perfectly complements your optimal stats of Wisdom (WIS 15) and Constitution (CON 14).

As you level up, your Circle of the Land features turn you into a magical powerhouse. Unlike other Druids who focus on transforming into beasts, you focus on the land itself. Your Circle of the Land Spells give you access to a wider variety of regional magic, while Natural Recovery (unlocked at level 6) lets you regain expended spell slots during a short rest, keeping your controller spells flowing during long adventuring days.

To make things even better, the Human's Resourceful trait gives you Heroic Inspiration after every long rest, ensuring you have a backup reroll when you absolutely must land a crucial crowd-control spell. Combined with Skillful for extra utility, this build ensures you are never out of options.

Circle of the Land Features

Circle of the Land Spells

Level 3

Each time you finish a Long Rest, choose one type of terrain: coast, desert, forest, grassland, mountain, swamp, or underdark. You gain spells based on the terrain you select.

Land's Aid

Level 3

As an action by magic, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape and choose a point within 60 feet of you. Non-magical difficult terrain within 20 feet of that point disappears.

Natural Recovery

Level 6

You can apply one of the spells you've prepared with a spell slot to a creature or object you touch. The spell uses the same saving throw DC and spell attack bonus as normal, but doesn't expend a spell slot.

Nature's Ward

Level 10

You have Immunity to the Poisoned condition, and you have Resistance to a damage type determined by your chosen terrain.

Nature's Sanctuary

Level 14

As an action by magic, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape and summon an otherworldly guardian at a point you can see within 60 feet of you. The guardian has AC 14, Hit Points equal to your Druid level, and immunity to Poison and Psychic damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Circle of the Land a good subclass for Human Druid?
Yes, it is an excellent choice. Humans provide the early-game flexibility that Druids crave. The free Origin feat from the Versatile trait helps you secure your concentration on spells, which is vital since controllers rely on maintaining spells over multiple rounds. Combined with your high starting Wisdom (WIS 15), this pairing ensures you are a reliable, highly adaptable spellcaster from day one.
What makes Circle of the Land different from other Druid subclasses?
Unlike other Druid subclasses that focus on shape-shifting or summoning pets, the Circle of the Land specializes in pure spellcasting and battlefield control. It offers extra spells based on your chosen terrain, the ability to heal or damage with Land's Aid, and Natural Recovery to regain spell slots on a short rest. It is the ultimate nature mage subclass.
