Why Path of the World Tree?

Barbarians are famous for taking hits, but the Path of the World Tree turns you into a supernatural protector. With your primary Strength (STR) starting at a high 15, you will easily dominate the battlefield. By choosing a Tiefling, your Fiendish Legacy grants you natural resistance to fire damage. This resistance stacks incredibly well with your Barbarian Rage, allowing you to shrug off both physical and magical damage while staying standing to protect your allies.

At level 3, you unlock Vitality of the Tree, which provides temporary hit points to you or your friends when you enter your Rage. Because your Tiefling heritage already reduces the fire damage you take, those temporary hit points last much longer, acting as a sturdy buffer. Additionally, Tiefling Darkvision ensures you can spot enemies in pitch-black dungeons, making you an excellent scout who can charge in and establish a frontline defense before your allies are targeted.

Path of the World Tree Features

Vitality of the Tree

Level 3

Your Rage draws life force from the World Tree. You gain the following benefits: Vitality Surge: At the start of each of your turns while your Rage is active, you can spend one Hit Point to regain Temporary Hit Points equal to 1d8 + your Constitution modifier. Reach of the Tree: Your reach increases by 5 feet with weapon attacks while your Rage is active.

Branches of the Tree

Level 6

When a creature you can see starts its turn within 30 feet of you while your Rage is active, you can use your Reaction to draw magical energy from the World Tree and slow that creature. The creature's Speed is reduced by 15 feet until the start of its next turn.

Battering Roots

Level 10

During your turn, your reach increases by 10 feet with any melee weapon attack you make, and when a creature within 10 feet of you hits you with an attack, you can use your Reaction to make a melee weapon attack against that creature.

Travel Along the Tree

Level 14

When you activate your Rage and while it is active, you can use a Bonus Action to teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Path of the World Tree a good subclass for Tiefling Barbarian?
Yes, it is an excellent choice. While typical Barbarians focus purely on dealing damage, this build excels at party support. Your Tiefling's innate fire resistance from Fiendish Legacy, paired with a solid 14 Constitution, ensures you survive heavy combat. This allows you to safely use features like Vitality of the Tree to shield your allies, making you the ultimate tanky team player.
What makes Path of the World Tree different from other Barbarian subclasses?
The Path of the World Tree stands out because it specializes in battlefield control and team support rather than just raw self-buffs. Instead of fighting selfishly, you use cosmic roots to shield allies with temporary hit points, teleport across the battlefield, and manipulate enemy positions. It shifts the Barbarian's role from a simple damage-dealer to a tactical defender.
