Why College of Valor?
The Dragonborn College of Valor Bard is a compelling 5/10 synergy that shores up the traditional weaknesses of martial bards while leaning hard into a frontline striker role. Historically, Valor Bards suffered from Multiple Ability Score Dependence (MAD), needing Strength or Dexterity to swing a sword while simultaneously trying to maximize Charisma for their spell save DC. Thanks to the updated Martial Training feature letting you use your Charisma modifier for weapon attacks, you can comfortably leave your Strength at 8, grab a longsword and a shield, and still strike with terrifying accuracy.
Pairing this chassis with the Dragonborn race gives you built-in Damage Resistance and a Breath Weapon. The Breath Weapon is a massive tactical boon here; Valor Bards typically lack reliable, resource-free AoE damage in early tiers. When you're surrounded by minions, unleashing a cone of draconic energy solves problems that a single weapon swing simply cannot. Furthermore, accessing Draconic Flight allows you to bypass the frontline entirely, diving the enemy backline to disrupt concentration on enemy casters or deliver clutch heals.
This build isn't without its flaws, however. A low Wisdom score of 10 means you are highly susceptible to debilitating control spells like Hold Person or Fear. But if you play smart, utilizing your medium armor proficiency from Martial Training and your racial resistances, you become a durable, spell-slinging warrior who can hand out Combat Inspiration to fortify your allies while cutting down your foes.
College of Valor Features
Combat Inspiration
Level 3You can use your wit to inspire others in battle. A creature that has a Bardic Inspiration die can use a Bonus Action on its turn to roll the die and gain a Temporary Hit Point for each point rolled on the die.
Martial Training
Level 3You gain proficiency with martial weapons and medium armor. In addition, when you attack with a weapon, you can use your Charisma modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls.
Extra Attack
Level 6You can attack twice instead of once when you take the Attack action on your turn.
Battle Magic
Level 14After you cast a spell, the casting time of which is an action, you can use a Bonus Action to attack with a weapon or make an Unarmed Strike.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
At level 1, prioritize surviving with your modest 12 Constitution and d8 hit die. Rely on Vicious Mockery and Dissonant Whispers to control the field. Hitting level 3 is your massive power spike: College of Valor grants Martial Training. Equip medium armor and a martial weapon immediately. You now use your 15 Charisma for attack and damage rolls, completely negating your 8 Strength. You also unlock Combat Inspiration; start handing out Bardic Inspiration dice to your frontline so they can use their Bonus Action to gain Temporary Hit Points. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat. This bumps your Charisma to 16, grants you Misty Step for emergency escapes, and gives you a free casting of Silvery Barbs or Bless.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Font of Inspiration, meaning your Combat Inspiration dice now recharge on a short rest. You also get 3rd-level spells like Hypnotic Pattern. At level 6, you gain Extra Attack, solidifying your role as a Striker. You can now swing twice with your longsword using your Charisma modifier. At level 8, take your Ability Score Improvement to bump Charisma to 18, increasing your spell save DC, weapon accuracy, and the number of Combat Inspiration dice you have. Level 10 unlocks Magical Secrets. Grab Find Greater Steed for a flying mount (saving your Draconic Flight uses) and Holy Weapon to add 2d8 radiant damage to your Extra Attacks.
Levels 11-16
At level 12, max your Charisma to 20. This pushes your spell save DC to its peak and maximizes your weapon damage. Level 14 unlocks Battle Magic, the crown jewel of the College of Valor. You can now cast an action spell, like Crown of Stars or Hold Monster, and immediately follow up with a Bonus Action weapon attack. This perfectly synergizes with your Striker role, letting you drop heavy crowd control without sacrificing your damage output. At level 16, pick up the War Caster feat. You will be in the thick of melee, and advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration on Holy Weapon or Animate Objects is mandatory.
Levels 17-20
Level 17 unlocks 9th-level spells; take Foresight to give yourself advantage on all your Charisma-based weapon attacks and saving throws for 8 hours, or Prismatic Wall for ultimate battlefield control. At level 18, your final Magical Secrets should include Wish and Absorb Elements (to stack with your draconic Damage Resistance). At level 19, use your final ASI to take Resilient (Wisdom). Your 10 Wisdom is a massive liability at this tier, and gaining proficiency in Wisdom saving throws will prevent you from being neutralized by high-level enchantments and illusions.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Take Vicious Mockery for early-game disadvantage application, and Minor Illusion for utility. Since you rely on Martial Training for damage, you don't need offensive cantrips as much as other bards.
Level 1-2 Spells
Dissonant Whispers is incredible for forcing opportunity attacks from your melee allies. Silvery Barbs protects you from critical hits. At 2nd level, grab Shatter for early AoE (when your Breath Weapon is down) and Aid to proactively buff your party's maximum hit points.
Level 3-5 Spells
Hypnotic Pattern is your premier encounter-ending spell. Dimension Door pairs beautifully with Draconic Flight to reposition yourself and an ally across the map. From Magical Secrets at level 10, take Holy Weapon to buff your Extra Attack damage and Find Greater Steed for extreme mobility.
High-Level Spells
Forcecage at 7th level traps enemies with no saving throw. At 9th level, Foresight gives you advantage on all your Martial Training weapon attacks and makes you nearly impossible to hit.
Recommended Feats
Fey Touched
Take this at level 4. It rounds your odd 15 Charisma to a 16, boosting your Martial Training attacks and spellcasting. Misty Step gets you out of grapples, and a free 1st-level enchantment like Silvery Barbs saves your precious spell slots.
War Caster
Essential for a frontline Valor Bard. Take this at level 12 or 16. It lets you cast spells while holding a weapon and shield, grants advantage on concentration checks for crucial spells like Hypnotic Pattern, and lets you use Dissonant Whispers as an opportunity attack.
Resilient (Wisdom)
With a starting Wisdom of 10, you are a sitting duck for late-game control spells. Taking Resilient (Wisdom) at level 19 adds your proficiency bonus to these saves, ensuring you don't spend the final fight frightened or paralyzed.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Acquire a breastplate or half-plate as soon as you get Martial Training at level 3. Pair it with a shield and a longsword. Your AC should jump to a very respectable 18 or 19. Look for a basic Ruby of the War Mage if you don't have War Caster yet.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Hunt for a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +1 to boost your spell save DC and give you a free use of Combat Inspiration. A +1 Longsword is also vital to keep your Extra Attack damage scaling against resistant enemies.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Upgrade to a +2 Weapon and seek out Dragon Scale Mail. Not only does it fit the Dragonborn theme, but it grants you resistance to a second damage type, stacking beautifully with your innate draconic Damage Resistance.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Aim for an Instrument of the Bards (Anstruth Harp). This gives you a massive suite of free spells and forces disadvantage on saves against your charm spells. A Blood Fury Tattoo is also phenomenal, letting you add necrotic damage and healing to your Extra Attacks.
Party Composition
As a College of Valor Bard, your primary role is a Striker with strong secondary Support capabilities. You want to be on the frontline, utilizing Extra Attack while simultaneously locking down the battlefield with control spells. Your Combat Inspiration provides a steady stream of Temporary Hit Points, making you an excellent force multiplier for other melee combatants.
You pair exceptionally well with a Paladin. Since your Wisdom is a low 10, standing inside a Paladin's Aura of Protection is vital for surviving tier 3 and 4 encounters. In return, your Dissonant Whispers can force enemies to flee, provoking devastating Divine Smite opportunity attacks from the Paladin.
A Rogue is another perfect teammate. Giving a Rogue your Combat Inspiration die ensures they have a buffer of Temporary Hit Points if they get caught out of position. Furthermore, your ability to cast Greater Invisibility on the Rogue guarantees them constant Sneak Attack, while you draw aggro with your medium armor and shield.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2
A two-level dip into Fighter is phenomenal for a Valor Bard. You gain the Defense fighting style for +1 AC, but the real prize is Action Surge. You can cast a devastating spell like Hypnotic Pattern, Action Surge, and then take the Attack action to swing twice with your longsword, completely dominating the action economy.
Sorcerer 1
Taking a single level of Sorcerer (Divine Soul or Draconic) gets you access to Shield and Absorb Elements. While you have Damage Resistance natively, Shield pushes your AC into the mid-20s, making you an absolute tank on the frontline without sacrificing your spell slot progression.
Common Pitfalls
- Hoarding Combat Inspiration: Don't forget that your allies must use a Bonus Action to roll the die for Temporary HP. Hand them out early in the fight; if you wait until they are at 1 HP, they might not get a turn to use it.
- Ignoring Spellcasting for Melee: Just because you have Extra Attack doesn't mean you should always swing your sword. Casting a high-impact control spell on turn one is almost always mathematically superior to dealing 20 damage.
- Misunderstanding Battle Magic: At level 14, Battle Magic requires you to cast a spell with an Action to get the bonus action attack. You cannot cast Healing Word (a bonus action) and expect to get a free weapon attack.
- Using Breath Weapon on Single Targets: Your Breath Weapon replaces an attack, but its damage is outpaced by your Charisma-fueled weapon strikes against single targets. Only use it when you can catch 3 or more enemies in the AoE.
