Why College of Glamour?

The 5/10 base synergy rating between Dragonborn and Bard is deceptive. While legacy ability score rules made this clunky, modern flexible stats let you start with a solid 15 Charisma while enjoying a suite of draconic survivability traits. The College of Glamour is arguably the best pure support subclass in the game, but it suffers from a lack of personal damage and extreme squishiness. Playing a Dragonborn solves both of these glaring issues.

The real magic happens when you mix the College of Glamour's unparalleled party repositioning with your Draconic Flight and Breath Weapon. Glamour Bards rely heavily on Mantle of Inspiration to grant temporary hit points and reaction-based movement. As a Dragonborn, you can use your own flight to hover safely out of melee reach, maintaining concentration on pivotal spells like Hypnotic Pattern. If enemies group up underneath you, your Breath Weapon provides an immediate, resource-free AoE damage option that most Bards would kill for.

Furthermore, your innate Damage Resistance keeps you alive when ranged attackers inevitably target the floating enchanter. The College of Glamour thrives on maintaining a majestic, untouchable presence; stacking Draconic Ancestry resistances on top of Unbreakable Majesty later on makes you incredibly frustrating for Dungeon Masters to pin down.

College of Glamour Features

Beguiling Magic

Level 3

You always have the Charm Person and Mirror Image spells prepared. In addition, you can cast each of these spells without expending a spell slot by expending one of your Bardic Inspiration dice. You can't cast them this way again until you finish a Short Rest.

Mantle of Inspiration

Level 3

You can weave fey magic into a song or dance to bolster the confidence of those around you. When you use your Bardic Inspiration feature, you can spend a Bardic Inspiration die to create a magical ward around yourself. The ward has a number of Hit Points equal to 1d4 + your Bard level + your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). When a Charmed creature within 5 feet of you takes damage, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage it takes by the current Hit Points in the ward.

Mantle of Majesty

Level 6

You always have the Command spell prepared. As a Bonus Action, you can expend one of your Bardic Inspiration dice to cast the Command spell using your current maximum Bardic Inspiration die size. You can't cast it this way again until you finish a Short Rest.

Unbreakable Majesty

Level 14

As a Bonus Action, you can assume a magisterial bearing for 1 minute. During this time, whenever a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see makes an attack roll against you, they must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from the attack roll. At the end of the minute, you can't use this feature again until you finish a Short Rest.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with 8 STR, 14 DEX, 12 CON, 13 INT, 10 WIS, and 15 CHA. At level 3, the College of Glamour comes online with Mantle of Inspiration and Beguiling Magic. Your game plan revolves around using your Bonus Action to spend a Bardic Inspiration die, granting your frontliners 5 temporary hit points and a free reaction move. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat to bump your Charisma to 16. This grants you Misty Step for emergency escapes and Gift of Alacrity to ensure you act first in combat to set up your party.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 is a massive power spike because Font of Inspiration lets your Bardic Inspiration dice recharge on a Short Rest. You can now aggressively spam Mantle of Inspiration. At level 6, you unlock Mantle of Majesty. This feature lets you cast Command as a bonus action for 1 minute without spending spell slots. Since it's a bonus action, you can use your action to blast enemies with your Dragonborn Breath Weapon while simultaneously ordering them to 'Grovel'. At level 8, take your Ability Score Improvement to push Charisma to 18, increasing your spell save DC and your total Bardic Inspiration uses.

Levels 11-16

At level 14, you gain Unbreakable Majesty, allowing you to force attackers to subtract a d4 from their attack rolls against you. Combine this with your Draconic Flight to hover above the battlefield, daring archers to shoot you through your magical ward and Damage Resistance. At level 12, max out your Charisma to 20. At level 16, take Resilient (Constitution) to bump your CON to 13 and gain proficiency in Constitution saving throws, ensuring you never drop concentration on crucial spells like Mass Suggestion.

Levels 17-20

At level 18, Magical Secrets grants you access to 9th-level spells from any list. Take Wish and Mass Heal. Wish gives you unparalleled versatility, while Mass Heal is the ultimate panic button. Your final feat at level 19 should be War Caster. Even with Unbreakable Majesty, high-tier monsters have massive attack bonuses; having advantage on your Constitution saving throws guarantees your fey enchantments stick.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Take Vicious Mockery for thematic debuffing and Minor Illusion for utility. Your Breath Weapon will out-damage Vicious Mockery in AoE situations, so save the cantrip for imposing disadvantage on a single heavy hitter.

Level 1-2 Spells

You automatically have Charm Person and Mirror Image prepared thanks to Beguiling Magic, saving you precious spells known. Take Silvery Barbs to force rerolls on enemy saves, and Healing Word for yo-yo healing. At 2nd level, Suggestion is your bread and butter for single-target removal.

Level 3-5 Spells

Hypnotic Pattern is mandatory at 3rd level. Fly up with Draconic Flight and drop it perfectly. Take Dimension Door at 4th level to teleport yourself and the Paladin out of danger. At 5th level, Synaptic Static targets Intelligence saves and debuffs enemy attack rolls, which stacks beautifully with the penalty from Unbreakable Majesty.

High-Level Spells

Forcecage (7th level) requires no concentration and instantly wins encounters. Otto's Irresistible Dance (6th level) fits the Glamour theme perfectly, forcing a creature to waste actions and granting your allies advantage on attacks against them.

Recommended Feats

Fey Touched

Take this at level 4. Bumping your starting 15 Charisma to 16 is essential. Getting Misty Step on a Bard is fantastic, and choosing Gift of Alacrity gives you an initiative boost, ensuring you can pop Mantle of Inspiration before your melee allies take their first turns.

Resilient (Constitution)

Take this at level 16. Bards lack native Constitution save proficiency. When you are flying 30 feet in the air maintaining a 6th-level spell, taking damage and failing a concentration check means falling. This secures your concentration and rounds out an odd CON score.

War Caster

Take this late in the build. While you won't be holding a shield or weapon often, advantage on Constitution saving throws combined with Resilient (CON) makes your concentration mathematically unbreakable against standard damage.

Metamagic Adept

An alternative to War Caster if you want more control. Take Subtle Spell. Being able to cast Suggestion or Charm Person in a social setting without verbal or somatic components perfectly aligns with the insidious enchantment theme of the College of Glamour.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Secure Studded Leather Armor immediately to boost your AC to 14. Keep a standard musical instrument as your spellcasting focus. You will rely heavily on positioning to avoid damage, so buy a few Potions of Healing for emergencies.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Hunt down a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +1. This increases your spell save DC, which is vital for making your Mantle of Majesty 'Command' spam stick. It also lets you regain one use of Bardic Inspiration as an action, fueling an extra Mantle of Inspiration.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Look for a Reveler's Concertina. It bumps your spell save DC by +2 and lets you cast Otto's Irresistible Dance once per day for free. Equip a Cloak of Displacement; attacks against you have disadvantage, and if they still hit, they must subtract a d4 due to Unbreakable Majesty.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

The ultimate goal is the Tome of Leadership and Influence to push your Charisma to 22. A Staff of the Magi is a legendary grab if your DM allows it, giving you a massive arsenal of spells and spell absorption to counter enemy casters.

Party Composition

As a College of Glamour Bard, you are the ultimate battlefield multiplier. You pair exceptionally well with slow, heavy-hitting melee classes like Paladins and Barbarians. These classes often struggle to close the gap on turn one. By using Mantle of Inspiration, you grant them 5-14 temporary hit points and let them use their reaction to instantly move up to their speed without provoking opportunity attacks, completely solving their mobility issues.

You also synergize perfectly with Rogues. The reaction movement from Mantle of Inspiration allows a Rogue to reposition for Sneak Attack or retreat to cover without spending their Cunning Action. Because you are handling all the crowd control and repositioning, your party should lean heavily into single-target burst damage.

Multiclass Options

Hexblade Warlock 1 dip

Taking a single level of Hexblade Warlock gives you medium armor and shield proficiency, bumping your AC to 19 with half-plate. You also get access to the Shield spell and Eldritch Blast. This solves the Glamour Bard's inherent squishiness.

Divine Soul Sorcerer 1 dip

A one-level dip in Divine Soul Sorcerer provides the Shield and Absorb Elements spells, plus the Favored by the Gods feature for an emergency +2d4 to a failed saving throw. This requires no armor changes and keeps your spell slot progression fully intact while vastly improving your defense.

Common Pitfalls

  • Taking the Inspiring Leader feat: This is a massive trap for Glamour Bards. Inspiring Leader grants temporary hit points, which do not stack with the temporary hit points generated by your core feature, Mantle of Inspiration.
  • Hoarding Bardic Inspiration: Once you hit level 5 and gain Font of Inspiration, your dice return on a Short Rest. You should be using Mantle of Inspiration in almost every combat round.
  • Casting Bonus Action Spells during Mantle of Majesty: When you activate Mantle of Majesty, you must use your Bonus Action to cast Command. If you cast Healing Word, you waste your turn's Command output.
  • Forgetting Beguiling Magic's free casts: Beguiling Magic lets you cast Charm Person or Mirror Image for free once per short rest by spending an Inspiration die. Don't waste a 1st or 2nd-level spell slot on these if you don't have to.

More Questions

Can I use Mantle of Inspiration on myself?
Yes. The text of Mantle of Inspiration specifies that you can choose 'a number of creatures you can see within 60 feet of you, up to a number equal to your Charisma modifier'. You are a creature you can see, so you can grant yourself the temporary hit points and the reaction movement.
Does Unbreakable Majesty work against spell attacks?
Yes. Unbreakable Majesty applies 'whenever a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see makes an attack roll against you'. This includes melee, ranged, and spell attack rolls, making you highly evasive against spells like Fire Bolt or Eldritch Blast.
How does Command work with Mantle of Majesty?
Mantle of Majesty allows you to cast Command as a bonus action without expending a spell slot. The target automatically fails their save if they are already charmed by you. The spell still requires the target to understand your language, so pick up Tongues if you face diverse enemies.
Should I use my Breath Weapon or cast a spell?
Use your Breath Weapon when enemies are clustered and you are already concentrating on a major control spell like Hypnotic Pattern. It acts as an excellent resource-free action while you use your bonus action for Mantle of Majesty's Command.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is College of Glamour a good subclass for Dragonborn Bard?
Yes, Dragonborn is a surprisingly good choice for a Glamour Bard. While they lack innate Charisma boosts in older printings, using Tasha's flexible rules gives you the stats you need. The real benefit is Draconic Flight and Breath Weapon, which provide mobility and AoE damage to a subclass that otherwise entirely lacks offensive presence.
What makes College of Glamour different from other Bard subclasses?
Prioritize Charisma above all else; aim for a 15 at character creation, using a +1 or +2 racial bonus to start at 16 or 17. Keep Dexterity at 14 to max out your AC with medium armor (if multiclassing) or studded leather. Keep Constitution at 12 or 13, planning to round it out later with Resilient (Constitution). Dump Strength to 8.
