Why College of Glamour?

The Aasimar College of Glamour Bard sits at a 5/10 baseline synergy, but in the hands of a tactical player, it performs like an 8/10. This build is all about weaponizing action economy and positioning. As a Glamour Bard, your primary game plan revolves around your Level 3 feature, Mantle of Inspiration. By spending a single Bardic Inspiration die, you grant Temporary Hit Points and allow your allies to use their reactions to move without provoking opportunity attacks. This instantly solves the melee martial's biggest problem: closing the gap.

Adding the Aasimar species chassis to this fey-magic subclass creates a bizarre but highly effective "angel of the fey" dynamic. Celestial Revelation grants you flight (if you choose the Radiant Soul or Protector options), allowing you to hover safely above the battlefield. From this vantage point, you can rain down crowd control and use Mantle of Majesty at Level 6 to spam the Command spell as a Bonus Action. Furthermore, your innate Celestial Resistance (Necrotic and Radiant) and access to Healing Hands make you surprisingly durable and versatile for a d8 hit die caster.

With an optimal starting stat block of STR 8, DEX 14, CON 12, INT 13, WIS 10, CHA 15, you'll need to carefully manage your low Constitution and Wisdom saving throws. You are not a frontline combatant; your 3.9 melee DPR at level 5 is abysmal. Instead, you are the ultimate battlefield director, floating above the fray, rearranging your party like chess pieces, and forcing enemies to grovel in the dirt.

College of Glamour Features

Beguiling Magic

Level 3

You always have the Charm Person and Mirror Image spells prepared. In addition, you can cast each of these spells without expending a spell slot by expending one of your Bardic Inspiration dice. You can't cast them this way again until you finish a Short Rest.

Mantle of Inspiration

Level 3

You can weave fey magic into a song or dance to bolster the confidence of those around you. When you use your Bardic Inspiration feature, you can spend a Bardic Inspiration die to create a magical ward around yourself. The ward has a number of Hit Points equal to 1d4 + your Bard level + your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). When a Charmed creature within 5 feet of you takes damage, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage it takes by the current Hit Points in the ward.

Mantle of Majesty

Level 6

You always have the Command spell prepared. As a Bonus Action, you can expend one of your Bardic Inspiration dice to cast the Command spell using your current maximum Bardic Inspiration die size. You can't cast it this way again until you finish a Short Rest.

Unbreakable Majesty

Level 14

As a Bonus Action, you can assume a magisterial bearing for 1 minute. During this time, whenever a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see makes an attack roll against you, they must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from the attack roll. At the end of the minute, you can't use this feature again until you finish a Short Rest.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start by prioritizing your 15 Charisma and 14 Dexterity. At Level 3, the College of Glamour completely changes your Bardic Inspiration economy. Beguiling Magic gives you Charm Person and Mirror Image for free, castable via a Bardic Inspiration die. However, your true workhorse is Mantle of Inspiration. Use this in round one of combat to grant your frontline allies Temporary Hit Points and a free reaction-based dash to engage the enemy immediately. At Level 4, take the Fey Touched feat to bump your 15 CHA to 16, gaining Misty Step and Gift of Alacrity to guarantee you act first and set up your Mantle.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings Font of Inspiration, meaning your Bardic Inspiration dice now recharge on a Short Rest. This allows you to use Mantle of Inspiration in almost every combat. Level 6 is your massive power spike: Mantle of Majesty. For one minute, you can cast Command as a Bonus Action without expending a spell slot, using a Bardic Inspiration die. Combine this with your Aasimar Celestial Revelation. Activate your wings, fly 30 feet up, and spend your subsequent turns casting a cantrip or using an action spell, followed by a Bonus Action Command ("Grovel" or "Flee"). At Level 8, push your Charisma to 18 with an ASI to increase your spell save DC.

Levels 11-16

At Level 11, your spell DPR reaches 10.18, and you unlock 6th-level spells like Mass Suggestion. Level 14 unlocks Unbreakable Majesty, a phenomenal defensive feature. As a Bonus Action, you force any creature attacking you to subtract a d4 from their attack roll. If you layer Unbreakable Majesty with a Mirror Image cast via Beguiling Magic, and you are flying via Celestial Revelation, you become virtually unhittable. At Level 12, take the Resilient (Constitution) feat to bump your 12 CON to 13 and gain proficiency in concentration saves, ensuring you don't drop out of the sky when concentrating on high-level fey magic.

Levels 17-20

In Tier 4, your Bardic Inspiration becomes a d12, maximizing the potency of your subclass features. At Level 17, you gain access to 9th-level spells. Take Foresight or Wish. With Foresight cast on yourself, combined with Unbreakable Majesty's d4 penalty to incoming attacks, enemies will need a natural 20 to hit you. At Level 19, round out your stats by taking the War Caster feat or maxing your Charisma to 20 if you haven't already. Your primary loop remains unchanged: activate flight, maintain concentration on a massive crowd control spell, and use your Bonus Action for either Command or Mantle of Inspiration.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Take Vicious Mockery and Minor Illusion. Vicious Mockery imposes disadvantage on attacks, stacking beautifully with the d4 penalty from Unbreakable Majesty later on.

Level 1-2 Spells

Do not prepare Charm Person or Mirror Image, as Beguiling Magic gives them to you for free. Take Silvery Barbs to protect your allies and Dissonant Whispers. Dissonant Whispers forces enemies to use their reaction to flee, provoking opportunity attacks from the martials you just repositioned via Mantle of Inspiration.

Level 3-5 Spells

Hypnotic Pattern is your go-to Level 3 concentration spell, heavily fitting the fey enchanter theme. At Level 4, take Polymorph for emergency healing or turning a low-HP Aasimar into a Giant Ape. At Level 5, take Synaptic Static for a massive AoE debuff that targets Intelligence saves, keeping your party safe.

High-Level Spells

Mass Suggestion at Level 6 requires no concentration, allowing you to control an entire encounter while maintaining Polymorph or Hypnotic Pattern. Forcecage at Level 7 is an auto-win against enemies without teleportation.

Recommended Feats

Fey Touched

Take this at Level 4. It bumps your starting 15 Charisma to 16. Thematically, it fits the College of Glamour perfectly. Mechanically, getting a free casting of Misty Step saves your Bard spell slots, and Gift of Alacrity ensures you roll high on initiative to drop Mantle of Inspiration before enemies act.

Inspiring Leader

Take this at Level 8. You have a high Charisma stat. Providing a massive buffer of Temporary Hit Points after every short rest means you don't have to waste your Bardic Inspiration on Mantle of Inspiration just for the THP; you can save it purely for the tactical repositioning or for Mantle of Majesty.

Resilient (Constitution)

Take this at Level 12. Your starting CON is a fragile 12. When you are flying 30 feet in the air using Celestial Revelation and concentrating on Hypnotic Pattern, failing a concentration check from a stray arrow means falling damage and losing your spell. This fixes your weak save.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Acquire Studded Leather armor immediately to leverage your 14 Dexterity, bringing your AC to 14. Look for an Instrument of the Bards (Mac-Fuirmidh Cittern), which imposes disadvantage on saving throws against your charm spells, drastically improving your Beguiling Magic.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Seek out a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +1. This boosts your spell save DC and allows you to regain one expended Bardic Inspiration die as an action, fueling an extra use of Mantle of Inspiration or Mantle of Majesty per day. Winged Boots are also excellent, allowing you to save your Aasimar Celestial Revelation for boss fights.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Upgrade to a Cloak of Displacement. When stacked with the d4 attack penalty from Unbreakable Majesty, enemies will have disadvantage AND a d4 reduction to their attack rolls against you, making you an untouchable god of the battlefield.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

Find a Tome of Leadership and Influence to push your Charisma to 22. Upgrade to an Instrument of the Bards (Ollamh Harp) and a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +3 to ensure your Level 6 Command spam via Mantle of Majesty never fails.

Party Composition

As a Glamour Bard, your party role is absolute Support and Battlefield Controller. You pair exceptionally well with melee Rogues (like Swashbucklers or Arcane Tricksters). By using Mantle of Inspiration, you allow the Rogue to use their reaction to move, which can set them up for an off-turn Sneak Attack if they ready an action, or simply get them out of danger.

Paladins and Barbarians also adore you. These classes are easily kited by ranged enemies. Your Mantle of Inspiration acts as a mass-teleport, letting your slow heavy-hitters close a 30-foot gap instantly without taking attacks of opportunity. Once they are engaged, you fly overhead with Celestial Revelation and drop debuffs.

Multiclass Options

Hexblade Warlock 1

A single-level dip into Hexblade grants you medium armor, shields, and the Shield spell. This pushes your AC from a measly 14 up to 19 (with a breastplate and shield). It also gives you Eldritch Blast, completely fixing your pathetic 3.9 melee DPR at Level 5 and giving you a reliable action while you spam Bonus Action Command.

Divine Soul Sorcerer 1

If Hexblade ruins your fey-angel theme, take one level of Divine Soul Sorcerer. You get the Shield and Absorb Elements spells, plus the Favored by the Gods feature (add 2d4 to a failed save). This perfectly matches the Aasimar celestial lore while providing massive defensive buffs.

Common Pitfalls

  • Hoarding Bardic Inspiration for rolls: The biggest mistake a Glamour Bard makes is giving out d8s for attack rolls. Your dice are almost always better spent activating Mantle of Inspiration for party-wide THP and movement, or Mantle of Majesty for crowd control.
  • Overlapping THP sources: The Temporary Hit Points from Mantle of Inspiration do not stack with other sources like Armor of Agathys, the Inspiring Leader feat, or Twilight Cleric auras. Plan your party composition accordingly.
  • Forgetting Beguiling Magic's cost: Remember that casting Mirror Image via Beguiling Magic costs a Bardic Inspiration die. If you do this round one, you can't use Mantle of Inspiration until round two.
  • Wasting Celestial Revelation: Don't pop your Aasimar flight in a 10-foot ceiling dungeon. Save it for open arenas where you can actually stay out of melee reach while concentrating on spells.

More Questions

Can I use Mantle of Inspiration on myself?
Yes. The feature allows you to choose yourself as one of the targets to receive the Temporary Hit Points and the reaction movement, making it a great tool to escape melee if you get cornered.
Does Unbreakable Majesty consume a reaction?
No. Unbreakable Majesty requires a Bonus Action to activate and lasts for 1 minute. During that time, the d4 penalty applies to any creature that attacks you automatically, without spending your reaction.
Can I use Mantle of Majesty and cast a leveled spell on the same turn?
No. Because Mantle of Majesty allows you to cast Command as a Bonus Action, the general spellcasting rules apply: if you cast a Bonus Action spell, you can only cast a cantrip with your Action on that turn.
How does Healing Hands interact with my Bard spellcasting?
Healing Hands is an Aasimar species trait that uses an Action to heal a creature. It doesn't use a spell slot, making it a great backup heal if you are out of slots for Healing Word or Cure Wounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is College of Glamour a good subclass for Aasimar Bard?
Yes, Aasimar is a solid, albeit unconventional, choice for a Glamour Bard (5/10 baseline). The primary synergy comes from combining Celestial Revelation's flight with Mantle of Inspiration. You can reposition your entire team while staying safely airborne and out of melee range.
What makes College of Glamour different from other Bard subclasses?
Prioritize Charisma first, then Dexterity, then Constitution. With point buy, aim for STR 8, DEX 14, CON 12, INT 13, WIS 10, CHA 15. You need the 15 CHA to maximize your spell save DC, while the 14 DEX maximizes your AC in Studded Leather.
