Why College of Glamour?

A Dwarf College of Glamour Bard sits at a 4/10 base synergy rating, but don't let that fool you. While Dwarves don't naturally boost Charisma in pre-Tasha's rulesets, the combination of Dwarven Toughness and the Glamour Bard's fey-woven battlefield control creates an incredibly resilient support caster. You aren't just playing a musician; you are a battlefield commander dictating the flow of combat with fey magic.

The College of Glamour solves the primary Dwarf weakness: terrible mobility. With Mantle of Inspiration at level 3, you can spend a Bardic Inspiration die to grant a burst of temporary hit points and allow your allies to immediately use their reaction to move their speed without provoking opportunity attacks. This completely breaks enemy frontlines and lets your sluggish Dwarf reposition safely.

Furthermore, Dwarven Resilience grants resistance to poison damage and advantage on poison saves, keeping you alive when the DM inevitably tries to break your concentration on Hypnotic Pattern. When you combine the extra hit points from Dwarven Toughness with the absolute crowd-control dominance of Mantle of Majesty at level 6, you become a shockingly tanky enchanter that enemies can neither ignore nor easily kill.

College of Glamour Features

Beguiling Magic

Level 3

You always have the Charm Person and Mirror Image spells prepared. In addition, you can cast each of these spells without expending a spell slot by expending one of your Bardic Inspiration dice. You can't cast them this way again until you finish a Short Rest.

Mantle of Inspiration

Level 3

You can weave fey magic into a song or dance to bolster the confidence of those around you. When you use your Bardic Inspiration feature, you can spend a Bardic Inspiration die to create a magical ward around yourself. The ward has a number of Hit Points equal to 1d4 + your Bard level + your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). When a Charmed creature within 5 feet of you takes damage, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage it takes by the current Hit Points in the ward.

Mantle of Majesty

Level 6

You always have the Command spell prepared. As a Bonus Action, you can expend one of your Bardic Inspiration dice to cast the Command spell using your current maximum Bardic Inspiration die size. You can't cast it this way again until you finish a Short Rest.

Unbreakable Majesty

Level 14

As a Bonus Action, you can assume a magisterial bearing for 1 minute. During this time, whenever a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see makes an attack roll against you, they must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from the attack roll. At the end of the minute, you can't use this feature again until you finish a Short Rest.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with your optimal stat array: STR 8, DEX 14, CON 12, INT 13, WIS 10, CHA 15. Your low Wisdom is a liability, but maxing Charisma is non-negotiable. At level 3, the College of Glamour comes online. You immediately gain Beguiling Magic, which permanently prepares Charm Person and Mirror Image, and lets you cast them once per short rest using a Bardic Inspiration die instead of a spell slot. This is a massive boost to your early-game spell economy. You also get Mantle of Inspiration, turning your bonus action into an AoE repositioning tool that hands out temporary HP.

At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat. This bumps your CHA to 16, grants you Misty Step (crucial for a 25ft speed Dwarf getting out of melee), and lets you grab Silvery Barbs or Gift of Alacrity. You need to act first to control the board.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings Font of Inspiration, meaning your Bardic Inspiration dice return on a short rest. This is the turning point for the build because at level 6, you unlock Mantle of Majesty. This feature lets you cast Command as a bonus action without expending a spell slot for 1 minute. Combined with Font of Inspiration, you can spam "Grovel" or "Flee" every single turn while using your main action to cast Vicious Mockery or dodge. Take +2 Charisma at level 8 to hit 18 CHA, pushing your spell save DC up so enemies fail those Command saves.

Levels 11-16

At level 14, you gain Unbreakable Majesty. For 1 minute, any creature that attacks you must roll a d4 and subtract it from their attack roll. Because you already have extra HP from Dwarven Toughness and poison resistance from Dwarven Resilience, popping Unbreakable Majesty allows you to confidently walk into the middle of a skirmish to maximize your 60-foot range on Mantle of Inspiration. Use your level 12 ASI to cap Charisma at 20.

Levels 17-20

In Tier 4, you are a god of the Feywild. You have 9th-level spells like Foresight or Wish. At level 16, grab War Caster, and at level 19, pick up Resilient (Constitution) to round your CON to 13 and secure your concentration checks. Your primary loop is casting a devastating concentration spell like Forcecage or Mass Suggestion, then spending subsequent turns using Mantle of Majesty to lock down anyone who survived the initial onslaught.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Take Vicious Mockery and Minor Illusion. Vicious Mockery gives you a reliable action to use while you are spamming Command via Mantle of Majesty. Minor Illusion is pure utility, allowing you to create cover for your 25ft-speed Dwarf.

Level 1-2 Spells

Dissonant Whispers is mandatory; forcing an enemy to flee provokes opportunity attacks from your melee allies. You don't need to learn Mirror Image or Charm Person because Beguiling Magic gives them to you for free. Pick up Suggestion for out-of-combat utility and Shatter for basic AoE.

Level 3-5 Spells

Hypnotic Pattern is your bread-and-butter encounter ender. Cast it on turn one, then use Mantle of Majesty on turn two. Take Plant Growth because it doesn't require concentration and utterly ruins enemy movement. At 5th level, grab Synaptic Static; targeting Intelligence saves with a fireball-sized debuff is incredibly potent.

High-Level Spells

Mass Suggestion at 6th level doesn't require concentration, allowing you to dictate the actions of up to 12 creatures while still running Unbreakable Majesty. Take Forcecage at 7th level via Magical Secrets to trap bosses without a saving throw, and Foresight at 9th level to give yourself advantage on absolutely everything for 8 hours.

Recommended Feats

Fey Touched

Take this at level 4. Bumping your Charisma from 15 to 16 is essential, and Misty Step perfectly solves the Dwarf's 25-foot movement speed issue. Thematically, drawing on Fey magic is literally the core concept of the College of Glamour.

War Caster

Take this by level 12 or 16. You will be concentrating on spells like Hypnotic Pattern or Polymorph constantly. Even with Dwarven Toughness keeping your HP high, taking damage forces concentration checks. Advantage on those checks keeps your fey magic active.

Resilient (Constitution)

Take this in the late game to gain proficiency in Constitution saving throws. When combined with War Caster and Dwarven Resilience (which already helps against poison), your concentration will be virtually unbreakable. It also rounds out your odd CON score if you started with a 13.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Secure Studded Leather Armor immediately to capitalize on your 14 Dexterity, giving you a base AC of 14. Grab a basic musical instrument to serve as your spellcasting focus. Rely on your Darkvision to navigate dungeons without holding a torch, leaving a hand free for a shield if you multiclassed, or just keeping a hand open for somatic components.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

You desperately need a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +1. This boosts your spell save DC, which is critical because Mantle of Majesty requires enemies to fail saving throws against Command. Also, seek out a Mac-Fuirmidh Cittern (Instrument of the Bards) to give enemies disadvantage on saves against your charm spells.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Upgrade to a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +2. Look for Glamoured Studded Leather to boost your AC to 15 while fitting the aesthetic of the subclass. A Cloak of Displacement pairs disgustingly well with Unbreakable Majesty; enemies will have to roll with disadvantage and subtract a d4 from their attack rolls to hit you.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

Acquire a Rhythm-Maker's Drum +3 and an Ollamh Harp. At this tier, your primary goal is ensuring your spell save DC is high enough that even Demon Lords fail their saves against your Forcecage or Command spam.

Party Composition

As a College of Glamour Bard, your party role is strictly Support and Battlefield Control. You are the conductor of the combat encounter. This build shines brightest when paired with heavy melee hitters who normally struggle with mobility. A Paladin or a Barbarian will worship you, as your Mantle of Inspiration allows them to instantly close a 30-foot gap using their reaction, guaranteeing they get full attack actions on their turn.

You also pair flawlessly with a Rogue. Because Mantle of Inspiration allows movement without provoking opportunity attacks, a Rogue can dart in, land a Sneak Attack, and use your fey magic to retreat to safety. Your Command spell (via Mantle of Majesty) can force enemies to approach or flee, perfectly lining them up for your frontline's area-of-effect abilities.

Multiclass Options

Hexblade Warlock 1 dip

Taking a single level of Hexblade Warlock is optimal for almost any Bard, but especially for a squishy Dwarf. It grants medium armor and shield proficiency, bumping your AC to a comfortable 19 (Half-Plate + Shield). You also get the Shield spell to completely negate hits when Unbreakable Majesty isn't enough.

Undead Warlock 1 dip

A one-level dip into Undead Warlock grants Form of Dread. Frightening enemies once per turn when you hit them with an attack (like Eldritch Blast) synergizes beautifully with the Glamour Bard's control elements. Frightened enemies have disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls, further protecting your party.

Common Pitfalls

  • Taking the Inspiring Leader feat: This is a massive trap for Glamour Bards. Temporary hit points do not stack. Your Mantle of Inspiration already hands out scaling temporary HP to your entire party as a bonus action, rendering Inspiring Leader completely redundant.
  • Clogging your Bonus Action: Mantle of Majesty requires your bonus action to cast Command. Mantle of Inspiration requires your bonus action. Healing Word requires your bonus action. Do not take spells like Spiritual Weapon (if you somehow gain access) or rely on two-weapon fighting; your bonus action economy is already packed.
  • Hoarding Beguiling Magic: Beguiling Magic lets you cast Mirror Image using a Bardic Inspiration die instead of a spell slot. Do not forget to use this before a major fight! It resets on a short rest once you hit level 5, so use it liberally to protect your Dwarf.
  • Misunderstanding Unbreakable Majesty: Unbreakable Majesty forces the d4 penalty before the attack hits, but it only lasts for 1 minute and uses your bonus action to activate. Don't wait until you are already surrounded and losing HP to activate it.

More Questions

Does Mantle of Inspiration trigger opportunity attacks?
No. Mantle of Inspiration explicitly states that the movement allowed by the reaction does not provoke opportunity attacks. This makes it the ultimate tactical retreat or engagement tool for your entire party.
Can I use Mantle of Majesty and cast a leveled spell in the same turn?
No. Because Mantle of Majesty allows you to cast Command as a bonus action, the standard spellcasting rules apply. If you cast a bonus action spell, the only other spell you can cast that turn is a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action (like Vicious Mockery).
Does Dwarven Resilience apply to magical poison?
Yes. Dwarven Resilience grants advantage on saving throws against poison and resistance to poison damage, regardless of whether the source is a natural venom or a magical spell like Ray of Sickness.
Can I cast Command at higher levels with Mantle of Majesty?
No. Mantle of Majesty explicitly states you cast the Command spell using your current maximum Bardic Inspiration die size, but it does not upcast the spell to target multiple creatures. It remains a single-target spell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is College of Glamour a good subclass for Dwarf Bard?
With a 4/10 rating, Dwarf isn't the most mathematically optimal race for a Bard, mostly due to the lack of an innate Charisma boost in standard rules. However, the synergy between Dwarven Toughness (extra HP) and Unbreakable Majesty creates a surprisingly tanky controller.
What makes College of Glamour different from other Bard subclasses?
Prioritize Charisma above all else. Your optimal starting stats are STR 8, DEX 14, CON 12, INT 13, WIS 10, CHA 15. Use your first ASI at level 4 to grab Fey Touched, bringing Charisma to 16, and cap it at 20 by level 12.
