Why Warrior of Shadow?

The Dragonborn Warrior of Shadow Monk is a fascinating paradox. You are a massive, scaled behemoth that relies on stealth, misdirection, and striking from the margins. The inherent synergy is surprisingly potent: a Monk's typical weakness is AoE damage, which your Draconic Ancestry Breath Weapon completely solves. Need to clear a swarm of goblins? Exhale a cone of fire, then use your Martial Arts to finish the survivors.

However, the glaring issue here is the lack of innate Darkvision. For a subclass that literally requires dim light or darkness to function—specifically for Shadow Step at level 6 and Cloak of Shadows at level 17—not being able to see in the dark is a massive liability. You will desperately need a magic item like Goggles of Night or a feat to grant you magical vision. Without it, you are blind in the very environment you are supposed to control.

Once you solve the vision problem, this build takes off—literally. Draconic Flight paired with your Unarmored Movement makes you an apex predator of the battlefield. You can drop from the sky, unleash a flurry of blows, and retreat into the shadows using Improved Shadow Step at level 11 without taking opportunity attacks. It's a 7/10 synergy that requires some specific tuning but plays like a draconic ninja when optimized.

Warrior of Shadow Features

Shadow Arts

Level 3

When you finish a Short or Long Rest, you can pick one leveled spell from the Wizard spell list that has a casting time of an action and is of a rank you can cast (see the Monk Spellcasting table for the ranks of spells you can cast). You can cast this spell without expending Focus Points. You can cast this spell in this way until you finish a Short or Long Rest, at which point you choose a different spell. When you cast this spell, you can use Wisdom as your spellcasting ability instead of Intelligence. You can spend 1 Focus Point when you cast a spell in this way to increase the spell's rank by one rank (if the spell scales).

Shadow Step

Level 6

When you take the Hide action in dim light or darkness, you can use a Bonus Action to take the Dash action as well. When you move at least 30 feet in one turn while in dim light or darkness, you gain the benefits of the Hide action for that turn.

Improved Shadow Step

Level 11

You can move through nonmagical dim light and darkness without provoking opportunity attacks. When you end your turn in dim light or darkness, you can use a Bonus Action and spend 1 Focus Point to become Invisible until the start of your next turn.

Cloak of Shadows

Level 17

When you are in dim light or darkness, you can use an action and spend 2 Focus Points to become Invisible. You remain Invisible until you make an attack, cast a spell, or until you are in bright light.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start by prioritizing your Dexterity and Wisdom. With our starting stats of DEX 15 and WIS 14, your Unarmored Defense puts your AC at 14—a bit low for a front-liner, so use your mobility to weave in and out of combat. At level 3, you unlock Shadow Arts. This incredible feature lets you pick one leveled Wizard spell on a rest. Grab Shield to fix your AC problem, or Find Familiar to gain an owl that can scout the shadows for you. At level 4, use your Ability Score Improvement to take the Skill Expert feat, bumping your DEX to 16 and grabbing Expertise in Stealth. You need your Stealth checks to be flawless.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings Extra Attack and Stunning Strike, making you a massive threat. Your Breath Weapon also scales up in damage here, giving you a reliable AoE option when Stunning Strike isn't necessary. At level 6, you gain Shadow Step. This transforms your action economy, letting you take the Dash action as a Bonus Action when you Hide in dim light or darkness. Pair this with Draconic Flight to reposition across massive, dark caverns in a single turn. At level 8, take the Eldritch Adept feat for Devil's Sight. Since Dragonborn lack Darkvision, this is absolutely mandatory to ensure you don't suffer disadvantage while fighting in the dark.

Levels 11-16

Level 11 is a massive spike with Improved Shadow Step. Moving through dim light and darkness without provoking opportunity attacks means you no longer need the Mobile feat. Even better, spending 1 Focus Point to become Invisible until the start of your next turn guarantees advantage on your first attack next round. At level 12, max your Dexterity to 20 for better hit rates and AC. At level 16, bump your Wisdom to 16 to increase your Focus save DC, which makes your Stunning Strike much harder to resist.

Levels 17-20

At level 17, you gain Cloak of Shadows. By spending 2 Focus Points, you can become Invisible in dim light or darkness until you attack or enter bright light. Use this outside of combat to bypass entire dungeons undetected. At level 19, push your Wisdom to 18 to finalize your AC at 19. By level 20, your Martial Arts die is massive, your Draconic Flight lets you rule the skies, and your mastery over the shadows makes you nearly impossible to pin down.

Recommended Feats

Eldritch Adept

Take this at level 8 and select the Devil's Sight invocation. Dragonborn do not get innate Darkvision. If you are going to rely on Shadow Step and Cloak of Shadows, you must be in dim light or darkness. If you cannot see in darkness, you will have disadvantage on all your attack rolls. This feat completely solves your species' biggest weakness for this specific subclass.

Skill Expert

A phenomenal half-feat for level 4. It bumps your starting 15 Dexterity to a 16, giving you a +3 modifier for attacks, damage, and AC. More importantly, it allows you to take Expertise in the Stealth skill. A Warrior of Shadow needs to be unseen, and rolling Stealth with double your proficiency bonus ensures even high-Perception enemies won't spot you.

Crusher

If you prefer using your bare fists (bludgeoning damage) rather than a shortsword or spear, Crusher is fantastic. You can knock enemies 5 feet in any direction once per turn. You can use this to punch enemies out of bright light and into dim light or darkness, ensuring they are positioned perfectly for you to utilize Improved Shadow Step on your next turn.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Your primary goal is securing a pair of Goggles of Night. Because you lack Darkvision, fighting in the dark is deadly until you get these or the Devil's Sight invocation. For weapons, use a standard Spear two-handed for 1d8 damage, applying your Dexterity via Martial Arts.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Seek out an Eldritch Claw Tattoo to give your unarmed strikes +1 to hit and damage, plus 15-foot reach once per day. A Cloak of Elvenkind is also incredible here; it imposes disadvantage on enemies trying to spot you, synergizing perfectly with the Hide action benefits of your level 6 Shadow Step.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

You need a Dragonhide Belt (+2 or +3). This item increases your Focus save DC, making your Stunning Strikes significantly more potent, and allows you to recover Focus Points once per day. Since Cloak of Shadows and Improved Shadow Step consume Focus Points, having a larger effective pool is vital.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

At this tier, look for the Gloves of Soul Catching. They push your Constitution to 20, add massive force damage to your unarmed strikes, and heal you. Pair this with a Blood Fury Tattoo, and your shadowy strikes will absolutely obliterate enemy bosses before they even know you are there.

Party Composition

This build shines when paired with allies who can manipulate lighting conditions without hindering themselves. A Twilight Domain Cleric is your best friend. Their Twilight Sanctuary creates an aura of dim light, instantly providing you with the environmental conditions you need to trigger Shadow Step and Cloak of Shadows, regardless of the time of day.

A Warlock or Shadow Magic Sorcerer is also an excellent pairing. If they cast Darkness and have Devil's Sight to see through it, you can join them in the bubble (once you grab Eldritch Adept for your own Devil's Sight). This creates a highly synergistic frontline where you both have advantage on attacks and enemies have disadvantage.

Multiclass Options

Fighter 2 dip

Taking two levels of Fighter gives you the Unarmed Fighting Style (upgrading your unarmed strikes to a d8 immediately) and Action Surge. Action Surge is incredible for a Striker; you can use your Breath Weapon to clear a mob, Action Surge, and then use your Attack action to target the boss, all in a single devastating turn.

Rogue 3 dip

A three-level dip into Rogue (Assassin) leans heavily into the ninja theme. You gain Expertise in Stealth natively, freeing up a feat. The Assassin's Assassinate feature grants advantage against creatures that haven't taken a turn. Paired with the invisibility from Improved Shadow Step, you become a guaranteed critical hit machine on round one.

Common Pitfalls

  • Forgetting you are blind in the dark: Dragonborn do not have Darkvision. If you jump into darkness to use your subclass features without Goggles of Night or Eldritch Adept, you will have disadvantage on all your attacks.
  • Ignoring your Breath Weapon: Monks traditionally lack area-of-effect damage. Don't get so caught up in punching things that you forget to use your Draconic Ancestry Breath Weapon when surrounded by low-HP minions.
  • Overlapping Bonus Actions: Shadow Step lets you Dash as a bonus action, but Flurry of Blows and Martial Arts also require your bonus action. Plan your turns carefully so you don't waste Focus Points trying to do everything at once.
  • Wasting Focus on Cloak of Shadows in combat: Cloak of Shadows costs 2 Focus Points and breaks when you attack. In combat, it is almost always better to use Improved Shadow Step's 1-point invisibility at the end of your turn instead.

More Questions

Can I use Shadow Step in magical darkness?
Yes, but you need to be able to see to navigate effectively. The level 11 feature Improved Shadow Step specifies nonmagical dim light and darkness for avoiding opportunity attacks, so pay close attention to whether the darkness was created by a spell like Darkness or is just natural night.
What Wizard spell should I pick with Shadow Arts?
Since you can change it on a rest, it depends on your day. Shield is the best combat option to fix your AC. Find Familiar is incredible for scouting. Disguise Self is amazing if you need to infiltrate a city rather than a dark dungeon.
Does Draconic Flight work in darkness?
Yes, Draconic Flight functions regardless of lighting. Combining flight with the bonus action Dash from Shadow Step allows you to cover massive distances in the air while remaining completely unseen by ground forces.
When should I use Cloak of Shadows?
Cloak of Shadows is best used as an out-of-combat infiltration tool. Because it breaks upon attacking and costs 2 Focus Points, using it mid-combat is highly inefficient compared to the 1-point invisibility granted by Improved Shadow Step.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Warrior of Shadow grants Shadow Arts at level 3
  • Strong species-class synergy enhances core abilities
  • Good armor class and initiative
  • Built-in damage resistance improves survivability

Weaknesses

  • Low Charisma limits social interactions
  • Limited ranged and magical options without multiclassing
  • No Darkvision — may need light sources in dungeons

Pro Tips

1

Use Shadow Arts to prepare Shield before major boss fights to protect your relatively low AC.

2

Combine Draconic Flight with the bonus action Dash from Shadow Step for incredible aerial repositioning.

3

Acquire Eldritch Adept early; your complete lack of Darkvision makes Shadow Step dangerous otherwise.

4

Save Cloak of Shadows for bypassing traps and guards, not for mid-combat evasion.

5

Use your Breath Weapon when surrounded; Monks lack AoE, making this your best swarm-clearing tool.

Yes, Dragonborn is a solid 7/10 race for the Warrior of Shadow Monk. The Draconic Flight synergy is incredible, allowing you to drop from the sky and vanish into the shadows. Furthermore, the Breath Weapon fills a massive gap in the Monk's kit by providing reliable AoE damage.
