Why Path of the Berserker?
The Path of the Berserker is the purest distillation of Barbarian aggression, and pairing it with a Dwarf turns you into an unstoppable meat grinder. This subclass demands that you use Reckless Attack to trigger your Frenzy damage. Because you're handing enemies Advantage against you every single turn, you are going to take a lot of hits. That's exactly where Dwarven Toughness comes in. The extra hit point per level offsets the danger of your aggressive playstyle, allowing you to survive the frontline while outputting massive damage.
At level 6, Mindless Rage fixes the glaring weakness of most martial characters: mind-control. Immunity to the Charmed and Frightened conditions means a spellcaster can't easily shut down your damage engine with a simple Fear or Charm Person spell. You just keep swinging. Later, at level 10, Retaliation turns your massive Dwarven health pool into an offensive weapon. Enemies have to attack you because you're Reckless, and when they do, you use your Reaction to hit them right back.
Ultimately, a Dwarf Berserker is a hyper-focused Striker. You lack the magical utility of a Wild Magic Barbarian or the party protection of an Ancestral Guardian, but you make up for it by bringing devastating single-target damage to the table. With Intimidating Presence at level 14 giving you a Bonus Action area-of-effect fear, you finally gain a potent crowd control tool that uses your primal power to lock down the battlefield.
Path of the Berserker Features
Frenzy
Level 3If you use the Reckless Attack while your Rage is active, you deal extra damage to the first target you hit on your turn with a Strength-based attack. To determine the extra damage, roll a number of d6s equal to your Rage Damage bonus and add them together. The damage is the same type as the weapon or Unarmed Strike used for the attack.
Mindless Rage
Level 6You have immunity to the Charmed and Frightened conditions while your Rage is active. If you are Charmed or Frightened when you enter your Rage, the condition ends.
Retaliation
Level 10When you take damage from a creature within 5 feet of you, you can use your Reaction to make a Melee attack with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike against that creature.
Intimidating Presence
Level 14As a Bonus Action, you can instill fear in others with your menacing presence and primal power. Creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become Frightened of you until the end of your next turn.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with your optimal array: STR 15, DEX 13, CON 14. At level 1, your primary goal is to use Rage to halve incoming physical damage while relying on a Greataxe to deal d12s. Level 2 introduces Reckless Attack, which is mandatory for your subclass. At level 3, you unlock Frenzy. From this point on, you must use Reckless Attack while raging to add your Rage Damage bonus in d6s to your first hit. At level 4, take the Slasher feat to bump your Strength to 16, increasing your attack bonus and reducing enemy speed by 10 feet when you hit.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Extra Attack and Fast Movement. At level 6, you gain Mindless Rage. This is a game-changer; you can now safely charge enemies casting Hypnotic Pattern or Dragons with Frightful Presence without getting locked down. At level 8, take your Ability Score Improvement to increase Strength to 18. Level 10 is a massive power spike with Retaliation. Because you are constantly using Reckless Attack for Frenzy, enemies will hit you. Retaliation lets you use your Reaction to make an immediate melee attack against them, effectively giving you a third attack every round.
Levels 11-16
Level 11 upgrades your Rage and grants Relentless Rage, which synergizes beautifully with your Dwarven Resistances to keep you at 1 HP instead of dropping. At level 12, use your ASI to cap your Strength at 20. Level 13 improves your Brutal Critical, making your Greataxe crits absolutely devastating. At level 14, Intimidating Presence comes online. Unlike older iterations, this is a Bonus Action. On the turn you enter Rage, you can't use it, but on turn two, force every enemy within 30 feet to make a Wisdom save or become Frightened, locking them in place while you cleave through them.
Levels 17-20
Level 17 grants your final Brutal Critical die. At level 19, pick up the Tough feat to stack with Dwarven Toughness, pushing your hit points into the stratosphere so you can survive late-game monsters hitting you with Advantage. Finally, level 20 grants Primal Champion, boosting your Strength and Constitution by 4 and uncapping them to 24. Your Frenzy damage, Retaliation strikes, and overall survivability reach god-tier levels.
Recommended Feats
Slasher
Take this at level 4. Your starting Strength is 15, so the +1 Strength from Slasher rounds you out perfectly to 16. Reducing a target's speed by 10 feet on a hit is incredible for a Berserker; it prevents enemies from kiting you, ensuring you remain within 5 feet to trigger your level 10 Retaliation reaction attack.
Great Weapon Master
A staple for any Barbarian, but especially potent here. Because Frenzy requires you to use Reckless Attack to get your extra d6s, you almost always have Advantage on your attacks. This Advantage mathematically offsets the penalty to hit, allowing you to land massive damage consistently with a heavy weapon like a Greataxe.
Tough
Take this at higher levels. Dwarven Toughness gives you +1 HP per level, and Tough gives you +2 HP per level. Combined with a d12 hit die, this creates a ridiculous health pool. You need every single hit point because you are constantly giving enemies Advantage against you to fuel your Frenzy.
Resilient (Wisdom)
While Mindless Rage protects you from Charmed and Frightened conditions while raging, you are not immune to spells like Hold Person or Polymorph. Taking Resilient (Wisdom) bolsters your worst saving throw, keeping your Dwarf in the fight against high-level spellcasters.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Start with a standard Greataxe and a few Handaxes for throwing. Your goal is to acquire Half-Plate armor as quickly as possible to maximize your AC with your 13 Dexterity and 14 Constitution. Keep a few Javelins handy for enemies that stay out of your 25-foot Dwarven movement speed.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a +1 Greataxe to ensure your Frenzy attacks land. More importantly, try to acquire Boots of Striding and Springing or Boots of Speed. Dwarves suffer from a base 25-foot movement speed, and while Fast Movement helps, extra mobility ensures you can always reach a target to maintain your Rage and trigger Retaliation.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Look for a Belt of Dwarvenkind. Not only is it incredibly thematic, but it boosts your Constitution by 2, directly increasing your AC via Unarmored Defense and padding your hit points further. Combine this with a +2 Greataxe or a Flame Tongue Greatsword to maximize the damage output of your three attacks (two from Attack action, one from Retaliation).
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Your ultimate goal is a Belt of Fire Giant Strength or higher to push your Strength beyond normal limits. A Blood Fury Tattoo is the perfect legendary item for a Berserker; it gives you extra necrotic damage and heals you when you land your Reckless Attacks, perfectly sustaining your aggressive frontline playstyle.
Party Composition
As a Dwarf Berserker, your role is the primary Striker. You are a damage-dealing engine that demands enemy attention because you are constantly swinging recklessly. However, you lack innate self-healing and crowd control before level 14. You need party members who can capitalize on the chaos you create and keep your massive hit point pool topped off.
Pair this build with a Twilight Domain Cleric. Their Twilight Sanctuary grants you temporary hit points every single round. Since you take half damage from physical attacks while raging, those temporary hit points go twice as far, completely neutralizing the penalty of enemies attacking you with Advantage due to Reckless Attack.
A Wizard or Sorcerer focusing on battlefield control is also essential. Spells like Web or Wall of Force can corral enemies into tight spaces, allowing you to walk in and cleave them down with Frenzy. Furthermore, since you have Mindless Rage, your spellcaster can drop a Fear spell directly on top of you without worrying about catching you in the crossfire.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2 to 3 Dip
Taking two levels of Fighter grants you a Fighting Style (Great Weapon Fighting) and Action Surge. Action Surge is devastating on a Berserker, letting you burst down a boss. If you go to level 3, the Champion subclass doubles your critical hit range, which pairs flawlessly with your persistent Advantage from Reckless Attack and your Barbarian Brutal Critical feature.
Rogue 2 Dip
While Strength-based, a two-level Rogue dip gives you Cunning Action. Being able to Dash as a Bonus Action completely solves the Dwarf's 25-foot movement speed issue. It also gives you Expertise in Athletics, making you an unstoppable grappler when combined with the Advantage on Strength checks granted by Rage.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting Reckless Attack: The level 3 Frenzy feature specifically requires you to use Reckless Attack to trigger the extra d6 damage. If you just attack normally, you lose your subclass's primary damage steroid.
- Poor Positioning for Retaliation: At level 10, Retaliation only triggers if the creature damaging you is within 5 feet. If you let enemies attack you with reach weapons or ranged attacks, you waste your Reaction. Stay in their face.
- Wasting Intimidating Presence: At level 14, using your Bonus Action to frighten enemies is powerful, but don't use it on high-Wisdom targets or enemies immune to fear. Know your bestiary.
- Ignoring Ranged Combat: Even with Fast Movement, Dwarves are slow. If you don't carry Javelins, flying enemies or archers on ledges will end your Rage because you won't be able to attack them or take damage.
