Why Path of the Wild Heart?
The Path of the Wild Heart Barbarian (the evolution of the classic Totem Warrior) is the undisputed king of soaking damage. When you combine this archetype with the Dwarf species, you double down on that core strength to an absurd degree. This build earns a rock-solid 9/10 synergy rating because every single species trait directly amplifies your subclass features.
Your primary goal is to be the immovable object that enemies break themselves against. With Dwarven Toughness granting you an extra hit point every level, you already boast a massive health pool. But when you activate the Bear option from Rage of the Wilds at level 3, you gain resistance to almost every damage type in the game (excluding Force, Necrotic, Psychic, and Radiant). Because you resist the damage, every point of your already-inflated HP pool is effectively doubled against conventional attacks. Even when you aren't raging, Dwarven Resilience has your back against poison damage and the poisoned condition.
However, this build is not just a meat shield. The Path of the Wild Heart grants you out-of-combat utility that most Barbarians desperately lack. Animal Speaker gives you ritual access to Beast Sense and Speak with Animals, turning your Dwarf into an exceptional wilderness scout. You'll leverage your massive survivability to use Reckless Attack constantly, ensuring you pump out top-tier Striker damage while laughing off the incoming retaliation.
Path of the Wild Heart Features
Animal Speaker
Level 3You can cast the Beast Sense and Speak with Animals spells, but only as Rituals. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for them.
Rage of the Wilds
Level 3Your Rage draws on the primal might of animals. Each time you activate your Rage, you gain one of the following abilities of your choice: Bear: While your Rage is active, you have Resistance to all damage except Force, Necrotic, Psychic, and Radiant. Eagle: When you activate your Rage, you can use a Bonus Action to gain a Fly Speed equal to your Walking Speed until your Rage ends. Wolf: While your Rage is active, Creatures within 5 feet of you have Disadvantage on opportunity attack rolls against targets other than you.
Aspect of the Wilds
Level 6You gain one of the following options of your choice. Each time you finish a Long Rest, you can change your choice.
Nature Speaker
Level 10You can cast the Commune with Nature spell, but only as a Ritual. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for it.
Power of the Wilds
Level 14Each time you activate your Rage, you gain one of the following options of your choice: Aspect of the Bear: You gain a Climb Speed equal to your Walking Speed. Aspect of the Eagle: When you activate your Rage, you can use a Bonus Action on the same turn to make a melee weapon attack, and you don't provoke opportunity attacks when you fly away from a creature. Aspect of the Wolf: You gain a Burrow Speed equal to half your Walking Speed.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with your stats arrayed as STR 15, CON 14, DEX 13, WIS 12, INT 10, and CHA 8. You want a Greataxe and the heaviest medium armor you can afford. At Level 2, Reckless Attack comes online; use it generously, as your d12 hit die and Dwarven Toughness give you the HP to trade blows. Level 3 is your defining tier: you get Rage of the Wilds. Nine times out of ten, you should pick the Bear option to gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, and most elemental damage. This is also when you get Animal Speaker—start ritual casting Speak with Animals to interrogate local wildlife for dungeon layouts. At Level 4, take the Slasher feat to bump your Strength to 16 and give yourself some much-needed crowd control by reducing enemy speeds.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Extra Attack and Fast Movement, finally fixing your Dwarf's sluggish 25-foot base speed. At Level 6, you gain Aspect of the Wilds. The beauty of this feature is that you can change it on a Long Rest. Default to an option that boosts your tracking or carrying capacity, but swap it out if you know you're heading into a specific environment. At Level 8, take Great Weapon Master. You have the HP to survive Reckless Attacking every turn, which offsets the accuracy penalty of heavy attacks. Level 10 grants Nature Speaker, giving you Commune with Nature as a ritual. You are now the party's premier wilderness guide.
Levels 11-16
Level 11 gives you Relentless Rage. Combined with your Bear resistances, you are functionally immortal against standard physical attacks. At Level 12, push your Strength to 18. Level 14 is a major power spike with Power of the Wilds. Every time you rage, you get to adapt to the battlefield. If you are fighting flying enemies, pick the Eagle option to use a Bonus Action to dash and close the gap. If you are fighting in vertical terrain, pick the Bear option for a Climb Speed equal to your Walking Speed. At Level 16, cap your Strength at 20.
Levels 17-20
At Level 17, your rage damage bonus increases and you get another Brutal Critical die. Level 19 is your final feat; take Resilient (Wisdom) to protect yourself from mental spells that bypass your physical resistances. Finally, Level 20 brings Primal Champion, boosting your Strength and Constitution to 24. With your Bear rage resistances, your effective HP pool is astronomical.
Recommended Feats
Slasher
Take this at Level 4. It rounds out your 15 Strength to a 16, granting you a better attack and damage modifier. More importantly, reducing a target's speed by 10 feet when you hit them with slashing damage (like your Greataxe) helps prevent enemies from walking past you to attack your squishy spellcasters.
Great Weapon Master
Take this at Level 8. As a Barbarian with Bear resistances from Rage of the Wilds, you have the durability to use Reckless Attack on almost every turn without dying. Reckless Attack grants advantage, which reliably offsets the attack penalty of GWM, allowing you to deal massive Striker damage.
Resilient (Wisdom)
Take this in Tier 3 or 4. Your Bear rage protects you from physical and elemental damage, but it does not protect you from a Hold Person spell. Failing a Wisdom saving throw is the quickest way to lose your Rage and get shut down. Proficiency in Wisdom saves is mandatory for high-level Barbarians.
Tough
If you roll exceptionally well for stats and have a free ASI, take Tough. When stacked with Dwarven Toughness, you gain an extra 3 HP per level. Because your Bear rage halves incoming damage, every point of HP from Tough is effectively worth double. It's mathematical overkill in the best way possible.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Do not rely on Unarmored Defense. With 14 CON and 13 DEX, your AC is a pitiful 13. Buy Scale Mail as soon as possible for 15 AC, and wield a Greataxe to maximize your eventual Brutal Critical features. Keep a few Javelins for flying enemies until your magic items come online.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Upgrade to Half-Plate armor for 16 AC. You want a +1 Greataxe to keep your Great Weapon Master attacks landing consistently. Seek out a Cloak of Protection to bolster your saving throws, particularly your weak mental saves.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
A Belt of Dwarvenkind is incredibly thematic and mechanically fantastic, bumping your Constitution and giving you poison immunity (upgrading your Dwarven Resilience). You also need a solution for flying enemies—since you can't always rely on the Eagle option from Power of the Wilds, grab Winged Boots.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Hunt down a Belt of Fire Giant Strength (or better) to push your attack modifiers through the roof. A Blood Fury Tattoo is the ultimate endgame item; the extra necrotic damage and healing scale beautifully with your massive damage resistances.
Party Composition
In the party, you are the primary frontline Striker and damage sponge. Because you take half damage from most sources while using the Bear option of Rage of the Wilds, healing spells cast on you are essentially twice as effective. You pair beautifully with a Life Cleric or a Circle of Stars Druid who can keep your massive HP pool topped off.
You also heavily rely on a controller caster, like a Wizard or Sorcerer. Since your Charisma is 8 and your Wisdom is only 12, you are highly susceptible to mental lockdown spells. A caster who can counterspell enemy casters or lock down the battlefield with Wall of Force ensures you can freely charge in and hack the biggest threat to pieces without getting charmed or paralyzed.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2
A two-level dip into Fighter is strictly optimal for almost any Barbarian. You pick up the Great Weapon Fighting style to reroll 1s and 2s on your d12 Greataxe damage. More importantly, Action Surge allows you to make four attacks in a single turn, resulting in devastating nova rounds when combined with Reckless Attack and Great Weapon Master.
Rogue 2
It sounds counterintuitive for a heavy-weapon Dwarf, but two levels of Rogue give you Cunning Action. Being able to Dash as a bonus action solves the Barbarian's biggest problem: getting kited. It frees you up from needing to pick the Eagle option from Power of the Wilds, letting you focus on the Bear option for climbing or just staying in Bear rage from level 3.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting your rituals: Players often ignore Animal Speaker and Nature Speaker. You can cast Speak with Animals and Commune with Nature as rituals. Use them constantly to scout dungeons and track enemies.
- Never switching Aspect of the Wilds: At Level 6, you can change your Aspect on a Long Rest. Don't leave it on the same option forever; tailor it to whether you are exploring a forest, diving into a dark cavern, or carrying heavy loot.
- Overusing Bear Rage: While Bear is mathematically the best Rage of the Wilds option, if you are fighting enemies that only deal piercing damage, your base Barbarian rage already resists that. Pick Eagle for mobility if the enemy lacks elemental damage.
- Relying on Unarmored Defense: With your stats, wearing Half-Plate gives you significantly higher AC than your Constitution modifier. Don't walk around naked just because it's a class feature.
