Why Gloom Stalker?

Playing a Dwarf Gloom Stalker Ranger earns a 4/10 synergy rating, but it is far more effective than that score suggests if you play strictly to the subclass's strengths. Gloom Stalkers are the undisputed kings of the first round of combat and lords of the dark. While Elves typically dominate this subclass for Elven Accuracy, the Dwarf brings something unique: unparalleled durability and a massive boost to darkvision.

Because the Gloom Stalker feature Umbral Sight increases your existing Darkvision by an absurd 300 feet, your Dwarf starts with 360 feet of darkvision. You will see the enemy long before the Dungeon Master even places their miniatures on the table. Furthermore, Umbral Sight makes you invisible to creatures relying on darkvision to see you. You are a ghost in the Underdark.

The Dwarf's 25-foot walking speed is a traditional drawback, but since you will be operating at range with a longbow or heavy crossbow, it rarely matters. When enemies do manage to close the gap, Dwarven Resilience (poison resistance) and Dwarven Toughness (extra HP per level) keep you alive. You aren't just a glass cannon; you are a heavily armored bunker sitting in absolute darkness, firing lethal shots with Dread Ambusher.

Gloom Stalker Features

Dread Ambusher

Level 3

You excel at striking before your enemies can react. You have Advantage on attack rolls against creatures that haven't taken a turn yet in the combat. In addition, if you're hidden when you make an attack roll, you deal an extra 1d8 damage with that attack.

Gloom Stalker Spells

Level 3

You gain oath spells at the ranger levels listed in the Gloom Stalker Spells table. [Gloom Stalker Spells: 3rd - Disguise Self, Invisibility; 5th - Darkness, Pass without Trace; 9th - Fear, Nondetection; 13th - Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility; 17th - Animate Objects, Mislead]

Umbral Sight

Level 3

You gain Darkvision within a range of 300 feet. If you already have Darkvision from another source, it increases by 300 feet. You can see in Dim Light within this radius as if it were Bright Light, and in Darkness as if it were Dim Light. You can't discern color in Darkness, only Shades of Gray.

Iron Mind

Level 7

You gain proficiency in Wisdom saves. If you're already proficient in Wisdom saves, you gain proficiency in Intelligence saves instead.

Stalker's Flurry

Level 11

You can use your Bonus Action to make two weapon attacks as part of the Attack action on your turn, rather than one. This increases to three attacks when you reach 11th level.

Shadowy Dodge

Level 15

Starting at 15th level, when a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack while you're in Dim Light or Darkness, you can use your Reaction to impose Disadvantage on the attack roll.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with 15 Dexterity and 14 Wisdom, prioritizing your ranged weapon attacks. At level 2, take the Archery fighting style to offset the accuracy penalty of your future feats. Level 3 is where the build comes online: you gain Dread Ambusher and Umbral Sight. Dread Ambusher gives you bonus speed, an extra attack, and an extra 1d8 damage on the first turn of combat. Because Umbral Sight makes you invisible in darkness, you will have Advantage on these attacks. At level 4, immediately take the Sharpshooter feat. The Advantage from invisibility easily offsets the -5 penalty, letting you inject +10 damage into every shot.

Levels 5-10

At level 5, you gain Extra Attack and 2nd-level spells. Your Gloom Stalker spell list grants you Pass without Trace automatically. Cast this before every dungeon breach to guarantee your party surprises the enemy, giving you a free turn to unleash your Sharpshooter attacks. Level 7 grants Iron Mind, giving you proficiency in Wisdom saving throws—a massive defensive boost against late-game crowd control. At level 8, take the Piercer feat to round your Dexterity up to 16 and add damage rerolls to your arrows. Level 9 grants the Fear spell from your subclass, which is excellent for peeling enemies off your squishy allies.

Levels 11-16

Level 11 transforms your action economy with Stalker's Flurry. If you miss an attack on your turn, you can make another weapon attack for free. This synergizes perfectly with Sharpshooter, effectively acting as an insurance policy for your -5 accuracy penalty. At level 12, take an ASI for +2 Dexterity (bringing you to 18). Level 13 grants Greater Invisibility from your Gloom Stalker spell list, allowing you to generate your own Advantage even in bright daylight. Level 15 provides Shadowy Dodge, letting you use your Reaction to impose Disadvantage on attacks against you in dim light or darkness.

Levels 17-20

At level 16, max your Dexterity to 20 to ensure your Stalker's Flurry and Dread Ambusher attacks rarely miss. By level 17, you unlock 5th-level spells, bringing heavy utility to the table. For your level 19 ASI, grab Resilient (Constitution) to protect your concentration on crucial spells like Greater Invisibility and Pass without Trace. Level 20 Ranger is notoriously weak (Foe Slayer), but it functions well enough to cap out your damage against favored foes.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Rangers do not receive cantrips unless you select the Druidic Warrior fighting style at level 2. Do not do this. You desperately need the Archery fighting style to make Sharpshooter viable.

Level 1-2 Spells

Absorb Elements is your primary survival tool against AoE elemental damage. Hunter's Mark provides a reliable damage boost, though it competes with your bonus action on turn one. From your Gloom Stalker list, you get Disguise Self and Invisibility, offering fantastic out-of-combat utility, while Pass without Trace is your defining 2nd-level spell for forcing surprise rounds.

Level 3-5 Spells

You automatically receive Fear and Nondetection from your subclass at level 9. Fear is phenomenal crowd control. For your manual selections, Conjure Animals is mathematically the best damage spell in the game for Rangers. Plant Growth creates massive, non-concentration difficult terrain to keep enemies far away from your Dwarven archer.

High-Level Spells

Level 13 grants you Dimension Door and Greater Invisibility. Greater Invisibility is paramount for a Gloom Stalker forced to fight in a brightly lit room, mimicking the benefits of Umbral Sight. Swift Quiver at level 17 allows for two bonus action attacks, dramatically spiking your sustained DPR after your Dread Ambusher turn is over.

Recommended Feats

Sharpshooter

Take this exactly at level 4. The Gloom Stalker relies on front-loading massive damage on turn one via Dread Ambusher. Because Umbral Sight often makes you invisible (granting Advantage), the -5 penalty to hit is easily mitigated. The +10 damage applies to your extra Dread Ambusher attack as well.

Piercer

Take this at level 8. Because your optimal starting Dexterity is 15, Piercer rounds it out to an even 16. It also allows you to reroll one low damage die per turn. When you score a critical hit—which happens more frequently due to Advantage from Umbral Sight—you roll an additional damage die.

Crossbow Expert

An alternative to Piercer if you prefer volume of fire over single-shot damage. It allows you to fire a hand crossbow as a bonus action. However, Gloom Stalkers often spend their turn-one bonus action casting Hunter's Mark or moving, which slightly diminishes this feat's value compared to other Rangers.

Resilient (Constitution)

Take this in Tier 3 or Tier 4. As a Gloom Stalker, your concentration is vital for Pass without Trace and Greater Invisibility. Dwarven Toughness gives you the HP to survive hits, but you need proficiency in Constitution saves to ensure you don't drop your spells when you take damage.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Start with a Longbow or Heavy Crossbow and Studded Leather armor. Your priority is saving up gold for Breastplate or Half Plate if you have the Dexterity to support medium armor, but with high DEX, Studded Leather will eventually win out. Buy a backup rapier for when enemies force you into melee.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Seek out a +1 Longbow to offset the Sharpshooter penalty. Boots of Elvenkind are essential; they give you Advantage on Stealth checks, which stacks beautifully with the +10 bonus from your Pass without Trace spell, guaranteeing you dictate when combat starts.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Look for an Oathbow or a +2 Longbow. The Oathbow gives you Advantage on attacks against a sworn enemy, ensuring you rarely miss your Stalker's Flurry attacks. Upgrade your armor to Serpent Scale Armor if your DM allows it, as it lets you apply your full Dexterity modifier to medium armor without imposing Disadvantage on Stealth.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

Acquire a +3 Longbow and a Cloak of Displacement. By this tier, enemies have True Sight or Blindsight, countering your Umbral Sight invisibility. The Cloak of Displacement ensures attacks against you still suffer Disadvantage, stacking with your Shadowy Dodge feature.

Party Composition

As a Gloom Stalker, your primary role is the Striker. You delete the most dangerous enemy on the board before they get to take a turn. However, your effectiveness is entirely dependent on the lighting conditions. You need a party that understands how to fight in the dark.

Pair this build with a Twilight Domain Cleric or a Way of Shadow Monk. Both classes excel in darkness and won't ruin your Umbral Sight. Warlocks with the Devil's Sight invocation are also perfect companions, as they can see in the dark without needing to light a torch.

Avoid pairing this build with Light Domain Clerics, Wildfire Druids, or any character that compulsively casts Daylight or relies on mundane torches. If your party illuminates the battlefield, your Umbral Sight ceases to function, stripping you of your primary source of Advantage and survivability.

Multiclass Options

Fighter 2 Dip

Taking two levels of Fighter after Ranger 5 is the most notorious Gloom Stalker multiclass. Action Surge allows you to take the Attack action twice. Because Dread Ambusher triggers "whenever you take the Attack action on your first turn," Action Surge grants you a second Dread Ambusher attack, resulting in 6 attacks on round one at level 7.

Rogue (Assassin) 3 Dip

If you want to fully commit to the turn-one nuke, three levels of Rogue grants Assassinate. This gives you Advantage against any creature that hasn't taken a turn, and turns any hit on a surprised creature into a critical hit. Combined with Pass without Trace to guarantee surprise, you will instantly annihilate boss monsters before they roll initiative.

Common Pitfalls

  • Lighting a Torch: The moment you or an ally casts Light or lights a torch, Umbral Sight's invisibility turns off. You lose your Advantage, and enemies can see you normally.
  • Misunderstanding Dread Ambusher: Dread Ambusher's extra attack and 1d8 damage only apply on the first turn of combat. Do not try to roll that extra d8 on round two.
  • Wasting Stalker's Flurry: Stalker's Flurry triggers when you miss an attack. It is not an unconditional extra attack. You must declare it immediately after a miss, and it only happens once per turn.
  • Delaying Level 5: Multiclassing before Ranger 5 is a trap. You absolutely need Extra Attack and Pass without Trace as soon as possible. Do not dip Fighter or Rogue until level 6 at the earliest.

More Questions

Does Umbral Sight work against Devil's Sight?
Yes. Umbral Sight makes you invisible to any creature that relies on Darkvision to see you in darkness. Since Warlock's Devil's Sight is technically distinct but functions as seeing normally in darkness, Jeremy Crawford has clarified Umbral Sight still trumps it.
Can I use Shadowy Dodge against ranged attacks?
No. The text of Shadowy Dodge explicitly states 'when a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack'. It is designed to protect you from melee assailants who have closed the gap, not enemy archers.
Does Stalker's Flurry work with Sharpshooter?
Absolutely. If you miss an attack because of the -5 penalty from Sharpshooter, Stalker's Flurry allows you to make another weapon attack as part of the same action. You can apply the Sharpshooter penalty to this new attack as well.
Why is my Charisma only 10?
Rangers are incredibly stat-hungry, needing DEX, WIS, and CON. Charisma is a dump stat for this build. You are a silent, shadowy stalker of the Underdark, not a party face. Let the Bard do the talking while you scout ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gloom Stalker a good subclass for Dwarf Ranger?
Dwarf is a solid 4/10 race for the Gloom Stalker. While it lacks the Elven Accuracy synergy of Wood Elves, it provides phenomenal durability. Dwarven Toughness gives you the HP of a Fighter, and the Umbral Sight feature explicitly adds 300 feet to your innate 60ft Darkvision, giving you a staggering 360ft of sight in pitch blackness.
What makes Gloom Stalker different from other Ranger subclasses?
Prioritize Dexterity and Wisdom. Your optimal starting stats using point buy should be STR 12, DEX 15, CON 13, INT 8, WIS 14, CHA 10. Dexterity fuels your Longbow attacks and Initiative, while Wisdom powers your Gloom Stalker spell save DCs and boosts your Iron Mind saving throws at level 7.
