Why Gloom Stalker?
On paper, a Dragonborn Ranger sounds clunky. Base Dragonborn lack Darkvision, which usually disqualifies them from dedicated stealth builds. However, the Gloom Stalker completely rewrites this narrative at level 3. Umbral Sight doesn't just give you Darkvision; it gives you a massive 300-foot range and turns you completely invisible to creatures relying on Darkvision to see you. You transform from a blind lizard into the apex predator of the Underdark.
This build thrives on turn-one burst damage. Gloom Stalker's Dread Ambusher grants a bonus attack dealing an extra 1d8 damage on your first turn. When you combine this with the Archery fighting style and Sharpshooter, you can delete priority targets before they act. Furthermore, your Dragonborn traits plug massive holes in the Ranger kit. Your Breath Weapon provides at-will AoE damage for swarms that single-target Rangers struggle against, and your built-in Damage Resistance stacks beautifully with Absorb Elements.
If your table allows the Fizban's Gem Dragonborn variant, Draconic Flight elevates this build to a 10/10. Hovering 60 feet above the battlefield in total darkness while raining down Sharpshooter attacks means most melee monsters simply cannot interact with you.
Gloom Stalker Features
Dread Ambusher
Level 3You excel at striking before your enemies can react. You have Advantage on attack rolls against creatures that haven't taken a turn yet in the combat. In addition, if you're hidden when you make an attack roll, you deal an extra 1d8 damage with that attack.
Gloom Stalker Spells
Level 3You gain oath spells at the ranger levels listed in the Gloom Stalker Spells table. [Gloom Stalker Spells: 3rd - Disguise Self, Invisibility; 5th - Darkness, Pass without Trace; 9th - Fear, Nondetection; 13th - Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility; 17th - Animate Objects, Mislead]
Umbral Sight
Level 3You gain Darkvision within a range of 300 feet. If you already have Darkvision from another source, it increases by 300 feet. You can see in Dim Light within this radius as if it were Bright Light, and in Darkness as if it were Dim Light. You can't discern color in Darkness, only Shades of Gray.
Iron Mind
Level 7You gain proficiency in Wisdom saves. If you're already proficient in Wisdom saves, you gain proficiency in Intelligence saves instead.
Stalker's Flurry
Level 11You can use your Bonus Action to make two weapon attacks as part of the Attack action on your turn, rather than one. This increases to three attacks when you reach 11th level.
Shadowy Dodge
Level 15Starting at 15th level, when a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack while you're in Dim Light or Darkness, you can use your Reaction to impose Disadvantage on the attack roll.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with a Longbow and scale mail, prioritizing DEX and WIS. Take the Archery Fighting Style at level 2 to offset the accuracy penalty of our future feats. Level 3 is your massive power spike. You gain Dread Ambusher (adding your WIS modifier to initiative and giving you a free 1d8 attack on turn one) and Umbral Sight. At level 4, immediately take the Sharpshooter feat. The +2 to hit from Archery helps mitigate the -5 penalty, making your turn-one Dread Ambusher burst lethal.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Extra Attack and 2nd-level spells. You get Pass without Trace for free as a Gloom Stalker Spell, turning your entire party into ghosts. Level 7 grants Iron Mind. Gaining proficiency in Wisdom saving throws for free is phenomenal, protecting you from crippling effects like Hold Person or Fear. At level 8, bump your Dexterity to 17. By level 9, you add Fear to your Gloom Stalker Spells, providing excellent crowd control when your Breath Weapon isn't enough.
Levels 11-16
Level 11 unlocks Stalker's Flurry, an absolutely incredible feature for Sharpshooters. If you miss an attack—which happens often with Sharpshooter's -5 penalty—you get to make another weapon attack for free. This drastically increases your reliable DPR. Take the Alert feat at level 12 to guarantee you act first. Level 15 grants Shadowy Dodge, allowing you to use your reaction to impose disadvantage on incoming attacks while in darkness. Combined with your Dragonborn Damage Resistance, you are incredibly difficult to kill.
Levels 17-20
At level 17, you gain access to 5th-level Ranger spells. Take Swift Quiver to weaponize your bonus action, granting you two additional attacks per turn. For your level 19 Ability Score Improvement, cap your Dexterity at 20. At level 20, Foe Slayer is notoriously underwhelming, but adding your Wisdom modifier to your attack or damage rolls against a favored enemy ensures your Dread Ambusher strikes land when it counts.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Rangers do not get cantrips unless you take the Druidic Warrior fighting style. We absolutely need Archery to support Sharpshooter, so skip cantrips entirely. Rely on your party's casters for Guidance.
Level 1-2 Spells
Absorb Elements is mandatory; stack it with your Dragonborn Damage Resistance to survive ancient dragon breath weapons. Hunter's Mark is a Ranger staple, but be careful not to cast it on turn one if you need your bonus action to hide. You get Disguise Self and Invisibility as free Gloom Stalker Spells, giving you Rogue-level infiltration.
Level 3-5 Spells
You automatically learn Fear and Nondetection. Add Conjure Animals at level 9 to overwhelm the battlefield with wolves or velociraptors. Guardian of Nature at level 13 is your boss-killer spell, granting advantage on all your Dexterity-based attacks to guarantee your Stalker's Flurry and Sharpshooter shots connect.
High-Level Spells
Your 13th-level Gloom Stalker spell is Dimension Door, giving you an unparalleled escape option that Rangers normally lack. For your 5th-level Ranger spells, Swift Quiver gives you two bonus action attacks, maximizing your Sharpshooter DPR in long fights.
Recommended Feats
Sharpshooter
Take this at level 4. The ability to ignore cover and add +10 damage to your attacks is non-negotiable. Because Dread Ambusher gives you an extra attack on turn one, you have more chances to apply this +10 damage right out of the gate.
Alert
Take this at level 8 or 12. Dread Ambusher already adds your Wisdom modifier to your initiative. Stacking the +5 from Alert practically guarantees you go first, allowing you to trigger Dread Ambusher before the enemy can move to cover.
Resilient (Constitution)
Take this at level 12 or 16. You will be concentrating on Pass without Trace or Conjure Animals constantly. Gaining proficiency in CON saves ensures you don't drop these crucial spells when an enemy manages to hit you through your Umbral Sight invisibility.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Buy a Longbow and the best medium armor you can afford (Scale Mail, then Half Plate). Rely on your innate Damage Resistance to survive hits until you can afford better AC.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a Weapon of Warning. Not only does it give you advantage on initiative (pairing perfectly with Dread Ambusher), but it prevents your party from being surprised, ensuring you always get your crucial first turn.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Look for a Dragon Wing Bow to add 1d6 elemental damage to every attack, bypassing the need for ammunition. A Cloak of Elvenkind makes you undetectable when combined with your Umbral Sight.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
The Oathbow is your holy grail. Advantage on all attacks against your sworn enemy means you will never miss your Sharpshooter shots, and Stalker's Flurry ensures that even if you roll double 1s, you get another try.
Party Composition
As a Gloom Stalker, your primary role is the Striker. You want to eliminate high-value targets on turn one using Dread Ambusher and Sharpshooter. Because of your Umbral Sight, you thrive in darkness, meaning you want a party that doesn't rely on carrying bright torches that ruin your invisibility.
Pair this build with a Twilight Domain Cleric. Their Twilight Sanctuary creates dim light, which directly turns on your Shadowy Dodge feature anywhere on the battlefield. Alternatively, an Assassin Rogue is a perfect companion. Your Pass without Trace ensures the entire party successfully sneaks up on enemies, guaranteeing the Assassin their auto-crits while you unload your Dread Ambusher volley.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2
Taking two levels of Fighter for Action Surge is a legendary combination for Gloom Stalkers. Because Dread Ambusher triggers on the Attack action during your first turn, using Action Surge to take a second Attack action triggers Dread Ambusher again. That’s six attacks on turn one at level 7.
Rogue 3 (Assassin)
If you want to lean fully into the turn-one nuke, three levels of Assassin Rogue grants Assassinate. Advantage on attacks against creatures that haven't taken a turn stacks flawlessly with Dread Ambusher, and any hit against a surprised creature is a critical hit.
Common Pitfalls
- Using Breath Weapon on Turn 1: Do not use your Dragonborn Breath Weapon on your first turn. You will waste the Dread Ambusher feature entirely, as it requires you to take the Attack action. Save the breath weapon for clearing minions on turn two.
- Carrying a Torch: Umbral Sight makes you invisible to creatures relying on Darkvision, but if you or an ally holds a torch, you are in Bright Light. You lose your invisibility and your advantage. Force your party to rely on darkvision or blinders.
- Holding Stalker's Flurry: Stalker's Flurry allows an extra attack when you miss. Don't play cautiously—spam your Sharpshooter -5 penalty. If you miss, Stalker's Flurry turns that miss into another attempt, completely mitigating the risk of the feat.
- Casting Hunter's Mark immediately: On turn one, your bonus action is often better spent hiding to guarantee advantage on your Dread Ambusher attacks, or casting Zephyr Strike. Hunter's Mark is for sustained fights, not burst rounds.
