Why Beast Master?

The Beast Master Ranger historically had a rocky reputation, but with the introduction of the Primal Companion, the subclass transformed into an action-economy powerhouse. Playing a Dragonborn Beast Master elevates this synergy by covering the Ranger's traditional weak spots. You get a built-in AoE option via your Breath Weapon, which is something martial Rangers desperately lack in Tier 1 and 2 play. While your Beast of the Land charges in to tie up the frontline, you can take to the skies with Draconic Flight, raining down arrows and elemental damage in perfect safety.

This build requires a delicate balancing act with your ability scores. Your optimal starting stats—DEX 15 and WIS 14—reflect the dual nature of the class. Your Primal Companion uses your spell attack modifier (Wisdom) to hit, meaning you cannot dump Wisdom if you expect your beast to contribute meaningfully to combat. Meanwhile, your own attacks rely on Dexterity. The Dragonborn's Damage Resistance adds a crucial layer of survivability, ensuring that even if enemies bypass your pet's disposable HP pool, you won't go down easily.

Ultimately, this is a 6/10 synergy that shines through tactical execution rather than raw numerical superiority. You are playing a Support/Striker hybrid. Your job is to use Exceptional Training to command your beast to harass enemies, absorb hits, and knock targets prone, while you capitalize on the chaos. The lack of Darkvision is a notable weakness for Dragonborns, but your Primal Companion doesn't need torches to tear out enemy throats.

Beast Master Features

Primal Companion

Level 3

You can summon the primal beast that is tied to your soul. As an action, you can summon or dismiss a Primal Beast that appears in an unoccupied space you can see within 30 feet of you. When you summon your Primal Beast, choose one of the following options for what appears: a beast that normally has a Challenge rating of 1 or lower, or a dinosaur with a Challenge rating of 3 or lower. On your turn, you can use a Bonus Action to command the beast to take the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge action.

Exceptional Training

Level 7

You can use a Bonus Action on your turn to command the Primal Beast to take the Attack action. You can also use a Bonus Action to command it to take the Dodge action.

Bestial Fury

Level 11

When you command the beast to take the Attack action, it can make two attacks as part of the action.

Share Spells

Level 15

When you cast a spell that targets only you and allows you to form a bond with an object or another creature (for example, Magic Weapon), you can extend the spell to your Primal Beast if the beast is within 30 feet of you and the spell doesn't have a range of Self.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with Ranger and prioritize an Archery or Druidic Warrior fighting style at Level 2. Archery makes you a deadly sniper, while Druidic Warrior solves your lack of Darkvision via the Produce Flame cantrip. At Level 3, the build truly comes online when you receive your Primal Companion. Choose the Beast of the Land; its Charge ability forces a Strength saving throw or knocks the target prone. This sets up advantage for your melee allies and forces enemies to waste movement standing up. At Level 4, take a half-feat like Piercer to round your Dexterity up to 16, ensuring your own attacks stay accurate as enemy AC begins to scale.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings Extra Attack and crucial 2nd-level spells like Pass without Trace. More importantly, your Primal Companion's attacks scale with your proficiency bonus, so its accuracy naturally improves here. At Level 7, you gain Exceptional Training, which allows you to use a Bonus Action to command the Primal Beast to take the Dodge action if you don't need it to attack. This makes your beast an incredible frontline wall. Use your Breath Weapon to punish enemies who cluster around your dodging beast. At Level 8, take an Ability Score Improvement to bump your Wisdom to 16. Your beast's attack rolls use your spell attack modifier, and a missed beast attack is wasted DPR.

Levels 11-16

Level 11 is a massive power spike thanks to Bestial Fury. When you use your Bonus Action to command your beast to Attack, it now makes two attacks instead of one. Combined with your Extra Attack, you are outputting four attacks per round. At Level 12, pick up the Sharpshooter feat. If your Beast of the Land knocks an enemy prone, you'll have disadvantage on ranged attacks against them, so you'll want to target other enemies or switch to a Beast of the Sky for Flyby harassment. Level 15 grants Share Spells. Cast Guardian of Nature on yourself, and suddenly both you and your beast have advantage on attacks and extra movement.

Levels 17-20

In Tier 4, your beast's HP scales to a respectable 100+ (5 times your Ranger level), but it will still die to concentrated fire. Use your 5th-level spell slots at Level 17 for Steel Wind Strike or Wrath of Nature. Avoid Swift Quiver; it heavily competes with your Bonus Action, which belongs to your Primal Companion. At Level 19, maximize your Dexterity to 20. The Level 20 Ranger capstone, Foe Slayer, is notoriously underwhelming, but adding your Wisdom modifier to one attack or damage roll per turn helps offset the Sharpshooter penalty.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

If you choose the Druidic Warrior fighting style at Level 2, take Produce Flame to solve your Dragonborn lack of Darkvision, and Guidance to support your party's skill checks outside of combat.

Level 1-2 Spells

At 1st level, Absorb Elements is mandatory. Stacking this with your Dragonborn Damage Resistance makes you incredibly resilient against elemental AoE. Take Entangle for early battlefield control. At 2nd level, Pass without Trace is non-negotiable for party stealth. Spike Growth is excellent; position your Beast of the Land to grapple and drag enemies through the spikes.

Level 3-5 Spells

At 3rd level, Conjure Animals allows you to flood the board with even more beasts. Take Revivify as a failsafe. At 4th level, Guardian of Nature is the crown jewel of this build; once you hit Level 15, Share Spells applies its massive buffs to your Primal Companion as well. At 5th level, take Wrath of Nature for massive area control.

High-Level Spells

As a half-caster, 5th-level spells are your cap. Steel Wind Strike provides excellent burst damage and mobility if you get caught in melee, though it doesn't synergize directly with your beast. Stick to upcasting Conjure Animals or utilizing Guardian of Nature for sustained DPR.

Recommended Feats

Piercer

Take this at Level 4 if you start with a 15 in Dexterity. Bumping your DEX to 16 improves your hit chance, damage, AC, and Initiative. The ability to reroll one piercing damage die per turn adds a nice bit of sustained damage over a long campaign, especially if you are using a Longbow.

Sharpshooter

Take this at Level 12. While it's a staple for any ranged martial, it requires careful positioning for a Beast Master. If your Beast of the Land knocks a target prone, you have disadvantage on ranged attacks against it. Use Sharpshooter to pick off enemy spellcasters in the backline while your beast ties up the melee brutes.

Resilient (Constitution)

Take this at Level 16. As a Ranger, you rely heavily on concentration spells like Entangle, Spike Growth, and Guardian of Nature. Losing concentration because you took a stray arrow hurts your DPR significantly. Adding proficiency to CON saves ensures your spells stay active.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Acquire a Longbow and Studded Leather armor as soon as possible. If your DM allows it, purchase custom-fitted Barding (armor) for your Primal Companion to boost its AC, keeping it alive longer in early encounters.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

Seek out a +1 Longbow to keep your damage relevant. A Moon Sickle (+1) is an excellent utility item for Rangers, boosting both your spell save DC (making Entangle more reliable) and your spell attack modifier, which directly increases your Primal Companion's chance to hit.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Look for an Oathbow for massive burst damage against bosses. An Amulet of Health is a great pickup to boost your Constitution to 19, freeing up your ASIs for Dexterity and Wisdom while drastically improving your survivability.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

Aim for a +3 Longbow and +3 Studded Leather. If you can secure a Tome of Understanding, use it immediately; increasing your Wisdom beyond 20 makes your Primal Companion's attacks incredibly accurate and deadly.

Party Composition

As a Dragonborn Beast Master, you fulfill a unique Support/Striker hybrid role. Your Primal Companion acts as an off-tank and control unit, while you provide sustained ranged damage and crucial survival spells like Pass without Trace. Because your beast provides a constant, allied melee presence, you pair flawlessly with Rogues. A melee Rogue will trigger Sneak Attack every single turn simply by standing next to your Beast of the Land.

You also synergize exceptionally well with Clerics. A Cleric casting Bless on the party significantly buffs both you and your Primal Companion, offsetting the accuracy penalty of your Sharpshooter attacks and ensuring your beast's Bestial Fury multiattacks land consistently. Finally, a control Wizard casting Web or Hypnotic Pattern benefits from your Beast of the Land physically dragging enemies back into the area of effect.

Multiclass Options

Cleric (Life Domain) 1

A single-level dip into Life Cleric transforms your out-of-combat healing. The "Lifeberry" combo (casting Goodberry with the Disciple of Life feature) yields 40 points of healing from a single 1st-level spell slot. It also grants heavy armor proficiency if you want to pivot to a Strength-based Beast Master, though our optimal stats favor Dexterity.

Fighter 2

Taking two levels of Fighter grants you the Archery fighting style (allowing you to take Druidic Warrior from Ranger) and the legendary Action Surge. Action Surge allows you to cast a heavy setup spell like Guardian of Nature and still take the Attack action in the same turn, maximizing your burst potential.

Common Pitfalls

  • Overusing Hunter's Mark: Hunter's Mark requires a Bonus Action to cast and move. As a Beast Master, your Bonus Action is completely monopolized by Exceptional Training to command your beast. Casting Hunter's Mark actively lowers your DPR by preventing your beast from attacking.
  • Ignoring Beast Positioning: Your Primal Companion is tough, but it isn't immortal. If you send it into a mob of enemies without support, it will die. Use Exceptional Training to command it to Dodge when it gets surrounded.
  • Misusing Share Spells: At Level 15, Share Spells only works if the beast is within 30 feet of you. If you cast Guardian of Nature while your beast is 40 feet away harassing a sniper, the beast gets nothing. Maintain tactical spacing.
  • Forgetting to Revive the Beast: If your Primal Companion dies, you can revive it with a 1st-level spell slot after a 1-minute ritual. Don't waste expensive Revivify diamonds on your pet; just take a breather after combat.

More Questions

Can my Primal Companion use my Hunter's Mark?
No. Hunter's Mark specifies that your weapon attacks deal the extra damage. Your Primal Companion's attacks do not benefit from it, which is another reason to avoid the spell on this subclass.
Does my Breath Weapon hurt my Primal Companion?
Yes, unless you position it carefully. Your Dragonborn Breath Weapon is an AoE that damages all creatures in its path. Always check your firing lines before unleashing it near your Beast of the Land.
Which Primal Companion option is best?
Beast of the Land is generally best for raw damage and control due to its Charge ability knocking targets prone. However, Beast of the Sky is excellent for Flyby harassment, especially if you rely on Sharpshooter and want to avoid the disadvantage of shooting prone targets.
How does Bestial Fury interact with my Extra Attack?
At Level 11, Bestial Fury allows your beast to make two attacks when you command it to Attack via your Bonus Action. You still take the Attack action yourself to make two weapon attacks, resulting in four total attacks per round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Beast Master a good subclass for Dragonborn Ranger?
Dragonborn is a 6/10 race for the Beast Master. While the stat spread isn't perfectly optimal without Tasha's custom rules, the Draconic Flight provides much-needed mobility, and the Breath Weapon gives you a reliable AoE option when enemies swarm your Primal Companion.
What makes Beast Master different from other Ranger subclasses?
A Beast Master Ranger must balance Dexterity and Wisdom. Prioritize DEX 15 for your own weapon attacks and AC, and WIS 14 because your Primal Companion's attack rolls use your spell attack modifier. Keep CON at 13 for survival and concentration checks.
