Why Fey Wanderer?
On paper, the Dragonborn Ranger is a thoroughly mediocre 6/10 combination. You lack Darkvision, your natural stat preferences don't align perfectly, and your Breath Weapon often competes with your weapon attacks for damage. But the Fey Wanderer subclass entirely flips this script, transforming the Dragonborn into one of the most potent crowd-control skirmishers in 5e.
The secret lies in the Fey Wanderer's 7th-level feature, Beguiling Twist. Whenever a creature within 120 feet succeeds on a saving throw against being charmed or frightened, you can use your reaction to force a different creature to make a Wisdom save or be charmed or frightened for a minute. By taking the Dragon Fear racial feat, you can replace your Breath Weapon attacks with an AoE fear roar. When enemies inevitably pass their saves against your roar, you immediately weaponize their success via Beguiling Twist to lock down a different high-priority target.
Furthermore, Otherworldly Glamour completely solves the Ranger's social pillar. By adding your Wisdom modifier to Charisma checks, you can comfortably leave your Charisma at a mediocre 10 while still serving as the party face. Combined with Draconic Flight for perfect positioning, this build is an absolute nightmare for Dungeon Masters relying on brute-force melee monsters.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with 15 Dexterity and 14 Wisdom, and take the Archery Fighting Style at level 2. At level 3, you gain your first Fey Wanderer Spells (Charm Person) and Otherworldly Glamour. You can now serve as the party's secondary face, adding your +2 Wisdom modifier to Persuasion and Deception checks. At level 4, immediately take the Dragon Fear feat, bumping your Constitution to 14. This gives you a massive AoE crowd control option that scales with your Constitution, setting up the foundation for your mid-tier power spike.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Extra Attack and 2nd-level spells, including your subclass Misty Step. Level 7 is your golden level: Beguiling Twist comes online. From now on, your combat loop involves using Dragon Fear to frighten a group. When one of them saves, use your reaction via Beguiling Twist to frighten the biggest threat on the board for a full minute, with no recurring saves unless they take damage. At level 8, take the Sharpshooter feat to ensure your ranged DPR remains relevant while you lock down the battlefield.
Levels 11-16
At level 11, you gain Fey Reinforcements, which (per your specific fey magic) allows you to cast Faerie Fire without expending a spell slot a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier. This is free, concentration-based advantage for your Sharpshooter attacks. Max out your Dexterity to 20 at level 12. At level 15, you acquire Misty Wanderer, allowing you to cast Misty Step for free multiple times a day. Combined with Draconic Flight, you are functionally untouchable by melee combatants.
Levels 17-20
At 17th level, your Fey Wanderer Spells grant you high-tier magic. Use your final ASIs at levels 16 and 19 to push your Wisdom to 20. This maximizes your spell save DC for Beguiling Twist, gives you the maximum number of free casts for Fey Reinforcements and Misty Wanderer, and pushes your Otherworldly Glamour bonus to a massive +5 on all Charisma checks.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Unless you took the Druidic Warrior fighting style (which you shouldn't, take Archery), you lack cantrips. Rely on your longbow.
Level 1-2 Spells
Absorb Elements is mandatory for survival against AoE. Entangle provides excellent low-level crowd control. Your subclass gives you Charm Person, which is hyper-efficient out of combat because if the target succeeds on their save, you can immediately bounce the charm to a hostile bystander using Beguiling Twist. Pass without Trace remains the best 2nd-level spell in the game for party stealth.
Level 3-5 Spells
Dispel Magic is a fantastic utility spell granted by your Fey Wanderer Spells. Conjure Animals or Summon Fey provide massive action economy advantages. At 4th level, Polymorph (from your subclass list) is an incredible emergency button to turn a dying ally into a Giant Ape.
High-Level Spells
At 5th level, Steel Wind Strike is excellent burst damage, though as an archer, you might prefer Swift Quiver to weaponize your bonus action for two extra Sharpshooter attacks per turn.
Recommended Feats
Dragon Fear
Take this at level 4. It allows you to expend a use of your Breath Weapon to force enemies within 30 feet to make a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened. Because this forces saves, it is the absolute best and most reliable self-contained trigger for your Beguiling Twist feature at level 7.
Sharpshooter
Take this at level 8. Even as a crowd-control specialist, you are still a Ranger. Sharpshooter allows you to ignore cover and deal massive +10 damage chunks. Since Draconic Flight lets you hover out of reach, you can snipe with impunity.
Resilient (Constitution)
Take this at level 12 or 16 if your Constitution is odd. Rangers rely heavily on concentration spells like Entangle, Pass without Trace, and your free Faerie Fire from Fey Reinforcements. Securing your concentration saves is non-negotiable in Tier 3 play.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Start with a Longbow and Studded Leather armor. Keep a rapier on hand just in case, but your Draconic Flight means you should rarely be caught in melee.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a +1 Longbow and Serpent Scale Armor. The armor lets you apply your full Dexterity modifier while offering a higher base AC than studded leather, easily pushing your AC to 18+.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
An Oathbow is exceptional for bursting down bosses. Alternatively, look for a Dragon Wing Bow to add elemental damage without requiring ammunition. An Amulet of Health is a great pickup to boost your Constitution, thereby increasing your Dragon Fear DC.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
A +3 Longbow is numerically superior to almost anything else for Sharpshooter math. Pair it with Dragon Scale Mail to stack another elemental Damage Resistance on top of your racial Damage Resistance.
Party Composition
Your role is a Support and Crowd Control skirmisher who can dish out respectable sustained damage. Because Beguiling Twist triggers whenever any creature within 120 feet succeeds on a save against charm or fear, you thrive in a party that spams these effects.
Pair this build with an Undead Warlock or a Conquest Paladin. The Undead Warlock's Form of Dread forces a fear save once per turn on a hit. Every time an enemy passes that Warlock's save, you can use your reaction to Beguiling Twist a different enemy. It creates an inescapable lockdown engine.
Multiclass Options
Undead Warlock 1
A single-level dip into Undead Warlock for Form of Dread gives you temporary HP and forces a fear save on one attack per turn. If the target succeeds, you immediately use your own Beguiling Twist on another target. It’s a self-contained synergy engine.
Fighter 2
Taking two levels of Fighter grants you the Defense fighting style (+1 AC) and Action Surge. Action Surge allows you to cast a spell like Entangle and still unleash a full Attack action in the same turn.
Common Pitfalls
- Ignoring your Wisdom stat: Unlike Hunter or Gloom Stalker Rangers who can dump Wisdom and just cast Hunter's Mark, the Fey Wanderer desperately needs Wisdom. Your Otherworldly Glamour checks, Beguiling Twist DC, and Fey Reinforcements charges all scale directly off Wisdom.
- Wasting Beguiling Twist on the same target: Beguiling Twist must target a different creature than the one who succeeded on the saving throw. Don't try to bounce the fear back onto the guy who just passed the save.
- Using Breath Weapon for damage at level 7+: Once you have Dragon Fear and Beguiling Twist, your Breath Weapon should almost exclusively be used for the fear roar. The 3d6 elemental damage is mathematically inferior to locking down half the encounter.
- Forgetting Otherworldly Glamour temp HP: You gain temporary hit points equal to your Ranger level + your Charisma modifier after every short or long rest. Don't leave this free durability on the table.
