Why Thief?

Choosing a Dwarf for your Thief Rogue creates an unexpectedly sturdy "Striker"—a party role focused on dealing high burst damage and escaping safely. While Rogues are typically fragile, the Dwarf's Dwarven Toughness grants you extra hit points every time you level up, while Dwarven Resilience protects you from poison. This added durability lets you confidently deploy your Sneak Attack in close combat without fearing a swift defeat.

As a Thief, you gain incredible utility early on. The Fast Hands feature lets you use your Bonus Action to disarm traps, pick locks, or use items in the middle of battle, while Second-Story Work improves your climbing speed. Combined with your innate Darkvision, you can slip into the shadows, scale walls effortlessly, and scout dangerous dungeons ahead of your party without needing a revealing torch.

With your optimal Dexterity (DEX 15) and solid Constitution, you balance nimble evasion with rugged defense. You will be able to slip past guards, steal vital quest items mid-combat, and eventually bypass class restrictions on magical items entirely using the Use Magic Device feature at later levels.

Thief Features

Fast Hands

Level 3

You can use the bonus action granted by your Cunning Action to make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check, use your thieves' tools to disarm a trap or open a lock, or take the Use an Object action.

Second-Story Work

Level 3

You gain the ability to climb faster than normal; climbing no longer costs you extra movement. In addition, when you make a running jump, the distance you cover increases by a number of feet equal to your Dexterity modifier.

Supreme Sneak

Level 9

You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks if you move no more than half your speed on the same turn.

Use Magic Device

Level 13

You have learned enough about how magic works that you can improvise the use of magic items. You ignore all class, race, and level requirements on the use of magic items.

Thief's Reflexes

Level 17

You have become adept at laying ambushes and quickly escaping danger. You can take two turns during the first round of any combat. You take your first turn at your normal initiative and your second turn at your initiative minus 10. You can't use this feature when you are surprised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thief a good subclass for Dwarf Rogue?
Yes! While Dwarves are traditionally seen as slow, the Thief subclass offsets this by granting excellent climbing and jumping options with Second-Story Work. Meanwhile, dwarven traits like Dwarven Toughness and Dwarven Resilience provide a fantastic defensive safety net, allowing your Thief to survive risky frontline skirmishes and bold thefts that would easily drop a frailer Rogue.
What makes Thief different from other Rogue subclasses?
The Thief specializes in battlefield interaction, vertical movement, and item utility. Unlike magic-focused or assassin Rogues, the Thief uses Fast Hands to throw caltrops, drink potions, or pick locks as a quick bonus action. They excel at climbing effortlessly and can eventually bypass class restrictions to activate any magic item in the game.
