Why Assassin?

The Assassin Rogue is the ultimate frontline "Striker" in D&D, specializing in dealing massive, single-target damage right at the start of combat. While typical Rogues are fragile glass cannons, choosing a Dwarf turns you into a hardy shadow-striker. Thanks to the Dwarven Toughness species trait, you gain extra hit points at every level, meaning that if your stealthy approach goes wrong, you have the durability to survive the counterattack.

This combination shines brightest in the dark. Darkvision allows you to scout ahead in pitch-black dungeons without a revealing torch, letting you set up the perfect ambush. When you strike from the shadows, your level 3 Assassinate feature ensures devastating damage against surprised targets. Additionally, Dwarven Resilience protects you from poison, ensuring you stay standing long enough to slip back into the darkness.

Assassin Features

Assassinate

Level 3

You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn't taken a turn in combat yet. In addition, any hit you score against a surprised creature is a critical hit.

Assassin's Tools

Level 3

You gain proficiency with the disguise kit and the poisoner's kit.

Infiltration Expertise

Level 9

You can unfailingly create false identities for yourself. You must spend seven days and 25 gp to establish the history, profession, and affiliations for an identity. You can't establish an identity that belongs to someone else. Thereafter, if you adopt the new identity as a disguise, other creatures believe you to be that person until given an obvious reason not to.

Envenom Weapons

Level 13

You can apply a special poison to your weapons as a bonus action. The next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack within the next minute, the target takes additional poison damage equal to your Sneak Attack damage and must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus) or be poisoned for 1 minute.

Death Strike

Level 17

When you hit a surprised creature, it must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the damage of the attack is doubled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Assassin a good subclass for Dwarf Rogue?
Yes! While Dwarves are traditionally seen as loud warriors, their natural traits perfectly cover the Rogue's weaknesses. Dwarven Toughness and Dwarven Resilience give you a safety net of extra health and poison resistance. This allows your Assassin to confidently slip behind enemy lines, initiate combat with a deadly ambush, and survive the frontline chaos if things get messy.
What makes Assassin different from other Rogue subclasses?
The Assassin specializes in high-risk, high-reward surprise attacks, unlike other Rogues who focus on constant utility or magic. With the Assassinate feature, you excel at starting combat, turning surprise rounds into guaranteed critical hits. Later features like Infiltration Expertise also let you adopt false identities, making this subclass the ultimate tool for stealthy execution and deep-cover spy craft.
