Why Assassin?

The Elf Assassin Rogue is the ultimate fantasy sniper and infiltrator, combining natural elven grace with lethal precision. Your primary stat is Dexterity (DEX 15), which powers your stealth, initiative, and weapon attacks. For a subclass that relies entirely on striking first and fast, starting with high Dexterity is absolutely essential to ensure you win the initiative roll.

This combination truly shines when your species traits pair with your subclass features. The Elf's Darkvision allows you to slip through pitch-black corridors to scout ahead without needing a torch. This sets up the perfect opportunity to use your level 3 Assassinate feature, which grants automatic critical hits on surprised enemies. Additionally, your Keen Senses give you a natural boost to Perception, helping you spot targets before they ever notice you.

Furthermore, your elven physiology provides excellent utility. The Trance trait allows you to complete a long rest in just four hours, leaving you with plenty of extra time to use your Assassin's Tools to concoct poisons or prepare disguises while the rest of the party sleeps.

Assassin Features

Assassinate

Level 3

You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn't taken a turn in combat yet. In addition, any hit you score against a surprised creature is a critical hit.

Assassin's Tools

Level 3

You gain proficiency with the disguise kit and the poisoner's kit.

Infiltration Expertise

Level 9

You can unfailingly create false identities for yourself. You must spend seven days and 25 gp to establish the history, profession, and affiliations for an identity. You can't establish an identity that belongs to someone else. Thereafter, if you adopt the new identity as a disguise, other creatures believe you to be that person until given an obvious reason not to.

Envenom Weapons

Level 13

You can apply a special poison to your weapons as a bonus action. The next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack within the next minute, the target takes additional poison damage equal to your Sneak Attack damage and must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus) or be poisoned for 1 minute.

Death Strike

Level 17

When you hit a surprised creature, it must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the damage of the attack is doubled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Assassin a good subclass for Elf Rogue?
Yes, it is an outstanding choice. The Elf's natural Darkvision and high Dexterity perfectly complement the Assassin's stealth-heavy playstyle. Darkvision allows you to navigate dark dungeons safely to trigger your devastating Assassinate feature, while Fey Ancestry ensures you won't be easily put to sleep or charmed right before launching an ambush.
What makes Assassin different from other Rogue subclasses?
The Assassin specializes in high-impact ambush damage and deep-cover infiltration. While other Rogues might focus on dodging, magic, or stealing, the Assassin is designed to end combat before it starts. Through features like Assassinate and Death Strike, it focuses entirely on dealing massive, fatal burst damage to unsuspecting targets on the very first turn.
