Why Archfey Patron?
At a glance, the Dwarf Archfey Patron Warlock earns a modest 5/10 synergy rating. Dwarves don't naturally boost Charisma in classic rulesets, and the Archfey's whimsical nature feels at odds with dwarven stoicism. However, when you look past the flavor mismatch, this build solves the Warlock's biggest mechanical problem: staying alive while concentrating on fight-winning crowd control.
As an Archfey Warlock, your role is Controller. Your damage is decidedly average—hovering around 9 DPR at level 5—but your ability to manipulate the battlefield is unmatched. Features like Steps of the Fey and Misty Escape make you incredibly difficult to pin down. When you combine this relentless mobility with Dwarven Toughness (giving you an extra 1 HP per level) and Dwarven Resilience (advantage on saves against poison), you become a surprisingly durable backline caster. You aren't playing a blaster; you are playing an untouchable chess master.
To make this work, you must lean heavily into the Archfey spell list. Spells like Faerie Fire and Plant Growth are your bread and butter. You start with a 15 Charisma, aiming to round that out with a half-feat at level 4. By playing a Dwarf, your 14 Dexterity maxes out your medium armor potential (if you take the feat or play a Mountain Dwarf) or light armor, while your racial traits absorb the blows your illusions fail to deflect.
Archfey Patron Features
Archfey Spells
Level 3You gain additional spells that count as warlock spells for you: Sleep, Faerie Fire (level 1); Calm Emotions, Phantasmal Force (level 3); Blink, Plant Growth (level 5); Dominate Beast, Greater Invisibility (level 7); Dominate Person, Seeming (level 9).
Steps of the Fey
Level 3As a bonus action, you can teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Misty Escape
Level 6When you take damage, you can use your reaction to turn invisible and teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. You remain invisible until the start of your next turn or until you attack or cast a spell. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Beguiling Defenses
Level 10You are immune to being charmed. In addition, when another creature attempts to charm you, you can use your reaction to attempt to turn the charm back on that creature. The creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your warlock spell save DC or be charmed by you for 1 minute or until it takes damage.
Bewitching Magic
Level 14You can cast one enchantment or illusion spell from the warlock spell list at its lowest level without expending a spell slot. Once you cast a spell in this way, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with a 15 Charisma and 13 Constitution. At level 1, your DPR relies entirely on Eldritch Blast. Take the Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast invocations at level 2 to keep enemies away from you. Level 3 is where your subclass comes online. You gain Archfey Spells; instantly grab Faerie Fire to give your melee allies advantage. You also unlock Steps of the Fey, giving you a bonus action teleport up to 30 feet a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat. This bumps your Charisma to 16, grants a free casting of Misty Step (saving your Steps of the Fey charges), and gives you Silvery Barbs or Command.
Levels 5-10
At level 5, you gain 3rd-level spell slots. The Archfey spell Plant Growth is the star here—it quarters enemy movement and does not require concentration. Drop it on a chokepoint and use Repelling Blast to push enemies back into the weeds. At level 6, you gain Misty Escape. Save your reaction for when a heavy hitter targets you; taking damage turns you invisible and teleports you 60 feet away, completely breaking enemy multiattacks. Level 8 is your first pure Ability Score Improvement; take +2 Charisma to reach 18. At level 10, Beguiling Defenses makes you immune to being charmed, effectively shutting down vampires, hags, and rival fey.
Levels 11-16
Level 11 grants your first Mystic Arcanum. Take Mass Suggestion, which scales beautifully with your controller role and doesn't use concentration. At level 12, take your final +2 Charisma ASI to cap at 20. Level 14 unlocks Bewitching Magic, allowing you to cast an enchantment or illusion spell without expending a spell slot once per long rest. Use this for a free cast of Crown of Madness or Phantasmal Force when you are out of Pact Magic slots. At level 15, grab the Visions of Distant Realms invocation for at-will Arcane Eye scouting.
Levels 17-20
At level 17, your 9th-level Mystic Arcanum should be Foresight or True Polymorph. Foresight cast on yourself grants advantage on all attacks and saves, and disadvantage on attacks against you, synergizing perfectly with your Dwarven Resilience and making you practically unkillable. Spend your final levels picking up utility invocations and grabbing the Resilient (Constitution) feat at level 19 to bump your 13 CON to 14, cementing your concentration checks for your massive late-game spells.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Take Eldritch Blast immediately; your DPR drops to nothing without it. Pair it with Minor Illusion for line-of-sight blocking and classic Archfey flavor tricks.
Level 1-2 Spells
From your Archfey Spells, Faerie Fire is mandatory at low levels. Armor of Agathys is a staple, stacking beautifully with Dwarven Toughness to deter melee attackers. Drop Sleep as soon as you hit level 5; it scales terribly.
Level 3-5 Spells
Plant Growth is the best 3rd-level spell on your list because it doesn't require concentration. Hypnotic Pattern is your go-to concentration crowd control. At 4th level, Greater Invisibility (an Archfey specific spell) turns you into an untargetable turret. At 5th level, Seeming offers unmatched party infiltration utility.
High-Level Spells
For your Mystic Arcanum selections, bypass the damage spells. Mass Suggestion (6th) outright ends encounters. Forcecage (7th) traps enemies with no initial save. Dominate Monster (8th) fits the Archfey theme perfectly, turning the biggest enemy threat into your personal pet.
Recommended Feats
Fey Touched
Take this at level 4. It rounds your 15 Charisma to 16. The free Misty Step ensures you don't burn through your Steps of the Fey charges too quickly, and a 1st-level enchantment spell like Command or Silvery Barbs provides excellent cheap control.
Moderately Armored
If you are playing a Hill Dwarf for the HP, your 14 Dexterity leaves your AC low. Taking this at level 8 bumps your AC from 14 (studded leather) to 18 (half plate and shield), allowing you to survive the frontline pressure when enemies bypass your Plant Growth.
Resilient (Constitution)
Take this to round out your 13 Constitution to a 14. As a controller, dropping concentration on Hypnotic Pattern or Greater Invisibility means a wiped party. Proficiency in CON saves is non-negotiable for Tier 3 and 4 play.
Inspiring Leader
With a maxed 20 Charisma, you can grant your entire party a massive pool of temporary hit points after every short rest. Combined with Dwarven Toughness, this makes your naturally squishy Warlock tougher than most Fighters.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Secure Studded Leather armor immediately. Seek out a Bloodwell Vial +1 to boost your spell attack rolls and your warlock spell save DC, which is critical for making Faerie Fire stick.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Upgrade to a Bloodwell Vial +2. Hunt for a Cloak of Displacement. When combined with your level 6 Misty Escape, enemies will have a mathematically miserable time trying to land a hit on you.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Look for an Illusionist's Bracers. This allows you to cast Eldritch Blast as a bonus action, effectively doubling your DPR to compensate for the Archfey Warlock's naturally low damage output. Alternatively, a Staff of Power provides an incredible AC boost and spell utility.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
A Robe of the Archmagi is your best-in-slot item, setting your base AC to 15, giving advantage on saving throws against spells (stacking wonderfully with Dwarven Resilience for poison spells), and permanently raising your spell save DC.
Party Composition
As an Archfey Warlock, you are a Controller who thrives on dictating where enemies can move and whether they can attack. Your damage is low, and your frontline presence is minimal. You need a sturdy melee presence to capitalize on the advantage generated by Faerie Fire and to stand at the edge of your Plant Growth to pick off immobilized targets. A Oath of the Ancients Paladin is a fantastic partner, double-downing on the fey theme while providing Aura of Protection.
You also pair flawlessly with area-of-effect blasters. An Evocation Wizard or Light Cleric can drop Fireball or Flame Strike directly onto enemies trapped in your Plant Growth or Hypnotic Pattern. Because you lack healing and native revival magic, ensure your party has a dedicated support caster to pick you up if Misty Escape isn't enough to save you.
Multiclass Options
Sorcerer (Divine Soul) 1
A one-level dip at level 1 or 2 is optimal. It grants you the Shield and Absorb Elements spells, which you can cast with low-level slots instead of burning your precious Warlock Pact Magic slots. The Favored by the Gods feature adds 2d4 to a failed saving throw, combining with Dwarven Resilience to make you virtually immune to crucial failing saves.
Fighter 2
Taking two levels of Fighter grants Action Surge. For a Controller Warlock, the ability to cast Plant Growth to trap enemies, Action Surge, and then cast Hunger of Hadar or Sickening Radiance over the same area creates an inescapable microwave of death in a single turn.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting Plant Growth is instantaneous: Unlike most Warlock area-of-effect spells, Plant Growth from your Archfey Spells list does not require concentration. Cast it and immediately follow up with Hex or Hypnotic Pattern.
- Wasting Misty Escape: Your level 6 Misty Escape triggers when you take damage, but it uses your reaction. Do not use Silvery Barbs or Shield if you anticipate taking a massive hit that turn, or you won't be able to teleport away.
- Casting Sleep at high levels: The Archfey grants Sleep at level 1, which is amazing early. But Warlock spell slots automatically scale, and Sleep does not scale well enough to justify a 3rd or 4th-level slot. Swap it out.
- Overlapping Bonus Actions: Between Steps of the Fey, Misty Step from Fey Touched, moving Hex, and casting Magic Stone, your bonus action economy is crowded. Plan your turns carefully.
