Let's be brutally honest: the Human Monk earns a 3/10 synergy rating because the base Monk chassis desperately needs raw stats, and the Human species doesn't offer the extreme mechanical advantages of a Bugbear's reach or a Wood Elf's movement speed. However, the Human's Versatile trait is the saving grace here. By granting a free Origin feat at level 1, you can immediately grab Tough or Savage Attacker, smoothing out the Monk's notoriously rough early-game progression.
The Human's Resourceful trait is another hidden gem for this build. Monks rely heavily on landing a specific hit to trigger Stunning Strike at level 5. Having a guaranteed Heroic Inspiration in your back pocket every long rest means you can force a reroll on that crucial attack roll when the enemy spellcaster absolutely needs to be locked down.
Where this combination struggles is the lack of Darkvision. As a skirmisher who needs to dive the backline, carrying a torch completely ruins your ability to use two-handed versatile weapons like a Quarterstaff. You will need to rely on your party for light sources or burn 2 Ki points on Darkness if you take the Way of Shadow subclass. Despite these hurdles, the extra skill from Skillful lets you pick up Stealth or Acrobatics, ensuring you aren't completely useless when the fists stop flying.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with standard array stats: 15 DEX, 14 WIS, 13 CON. For your Versatile Origin feat, take Tough. A d8 hit die on a frontline striker is a death sentence, and getting +2 HP per level immediately makes you as durable as a Fighter. At level 3, lock in the Way of Mercy subclass. Hand of Harm guarantees extra necrotic damage without requiring a saving throw, which perfectly patches your low early DPR. At level 4, use your Ability Score Improvement to bump DEX to 16 and CON to 14, rounding out your odd scores and boosting your Unarmored Defense AC to 15.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 is the Monk's major power spike. You gain Extra Attack, d6 Martial Arts die, and Stunning Strike. Use your Human Resourceful Heroic Inspiration on your first attack against a priority target to ensure a hit, then spend 1 Ki to force the Stun. At level 6, your unarmed strikes become magical, bypassing resistances. At level 8, take a +2 DEX ASI to reach 18 Dexterity. This boosts your attack modifier, your damage, your Initiative, and your AC to 16.
Levels 11-16
At level 11, Way of Mercy grants Flurry of Healing and Harm, allowing you to deal extra necrotic damage and heal an ally simultaneously when you spend 1 Ki on Flurry of Blows. Your Martial Arts die also scales to a d8. At level 12, max your Dexterity to 20 with your ASI. By level 14, Diamond Soul grants proficiency in all saving throws; combined with your Heroic Inspiration reroll, you will almost never fail a crucial save again. At level 16, start pumping Wisdom with a +2 ASI, raising your Stunning Strike DC.
Levels 17-20
Level 17 upgrades your Martial Arts die to a d10, slightly bumping your base DPR. Level 18 unlocks Empty Body, arguably the best base Monk feature. Spending 4 Ki for one minute of invisibility and resistance to all damage except force completely negates the Human's lack of Darkvision, as attackers will have disadvantage against you regardless of the lighting. Take +2 Wisdom at level 19 to reach 18 WIS, bringing your final Unarmored Defense AC to 19.
Recommended Feats
Tough
Take this at level 1 using your Human Versatile trait. Monks are notoriously fragile skirmishers stuck in melee with a d8 hit die. Tough effectively turns your hit die into a d12 equivalent for HP purposes, allowing you to survive taking an attack of opportunity when you don't have the Ki to spend on Step of the Wind.
Crusher
If you prefer to start with an odd Constitution score (like 15), Crusher is a phenomenal half-feat. Bumping your CON by 1 and allowing you to move a target 5 feet once per turn when you deal bludgeoning damage (which is all your Unarmed Strikes) gives you a free disengage tactic. Punch them, push them 5 feet back, and walk away without provoking opportunity attacks.
Mobile
While humans have a standard 30-foot movement speed, Mobile adds 10 feet and prevents opportunity attacks from enemies you swing at. This is vital for a Human Monk, as it completely removes the necessity of spending 1 Ki on Step of the Wind to disengage, saving your limited resource pool exclusively for Flurry of Blows or Stunning Strike.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Equip a simple Quarterstaff or Spear and wield it with two hands for a d8 damage die, relying on your Unarmed Strike for your bonus action. Since you lack Darkvision, convince your spellcaster to cast Light on your staff so you can see in dungeons without sacrificing a free hand. Carry a few Darts for when enemies are out of your 40-foot movement range.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out an Eldritch Claw Tattoo. This uncommon item gives a +1 bonus to your unarmed attack and damage rolls, and its Eldritch Maul property grants your fists a 15-foot reach for a minute. This is incredible for a Human Monk, allowing you to strike from the second line without entering melee danger. Also, prioritize Bracers of Defense to bump your AC by +2, offsetting your slightly delayed Wisdom progression.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
You desperately need a Dragonhide Belt, +2 (from Fizban's Treasury of Dragons). This item increases the saving throw DC of your Ki features by 2. Because you prioritized Dexterity over Wisdom to deal damage, your Stunning Strike DC will be lagging. This belt completely fixes that math, while also allowing you to use an action to regain Ki points equal to a roll of your Martial Arts die.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
The holy grail for this build is the Gloves of Soul Catching. They boost your Constitution to 20 (synergizing perfectly with your Tough feat to give you a massive HP pool) and add 2d10 force damage to every unarmed strike. Given that you make up to four attacks per turn with Flurry of Blows, this single item solves the Monk's notoriously poor late-game DPR.
Party Composition
As a Human Monk Striker, your role is to dive the enemy backline, disrupt spellcasters with Stunning Strike, and use your high mobility to flank. Because you lack Darkvision and have a relatively squishy AC in the early game, you rely heavily on specific party synergies to survive and thrive.
You pair perfectly with a Twilight Domain Cleric. Their Eyes of Night feature grants you 300 feet of Darkvision, entirely erasing the Human species' biggest weakness. Furthermore, their Twilight Sanctuary provides a constant stream of temporary hit points that stack beautifully with your Tough feat, making you an unkillable frontline nuisance.
A Battle Master Fighter is another excellent companion. They can use Commander's Strike to grant you an off-turn attack (which you can still apply Stunning Strike to, since it's once per turn, not once per round), or use Maneuvering Attack to help you retreat if you've burned through your Ki points and can't afford Step of the Wind.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2
Taking two levels of Fighter is a massive DPR boost for the Human Monk. You pick up the Unarmed Fighting Style (if your DM allows it to apply, though Dueling is great if you use a dedicated Monk weapon). More importantly, Action Surge allows you to take two Attack actions. At level 5, that's four attacks, plus two from Flurry of Blows, giving you six chances to land a Stunning Strike on a boss.
Peace Domain Cleric 1
A single level dip into Peace Cleric nets you Emboldening Bond, granting a 1d4 bonus to attacks, saves, and ability checks. Because you have a respectable 14 Wisdom, you can use this multiple times a day. Stacking Emboldening Bond's 1d4 with your Human Resourceful Heroic Inspiration reroll ensures that your crucial attacks almost never miss.
Common Pitfalls
- Fighting in the dark: Forgetting you lack Darkvision means you'll swing with disadvantage in unlit dungeons. Always coordinate with a caster for the Light cantrip or carry a glowing magic item.
- Blowing all Ki on Flurry of Blows: It's tempting to use your Versatile Tough feat HP pool to facetank, but if you spend all your Ki dealing an extra 1d6 damage, you won't have 1 Ki left for Patient Defense when four enemies surround you.
- Hoarding Heroic Inspiration: The Human's Resourceful trait resets after a Long Rest. Don't save it for the perfect moment. Use it on the first missed attack roll that would otherwise let you apply a crucial Stunning Strike.
- Ignoring your ranged options: Yes, your DPR with a Dart is terrible. But running 40 feet into a pack of enemies just to get one punch off is worse. Use your superior Monk speed to kite and throw Darts until the tank engages.
