The Orc Barbarian earns a rock-solid 8/10 synergy rating because it solves the Barbarian's most glaring weakness: getting kited. Barbarians need to make melee attacks or take damage to keep their Rage active. The Orc's Adrenaline Rush provides a bonus action Dash a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, guaranteeing you can cross the battlefield and land a hit on turn one without sacrificing your main action to Dash.
Furthermore, the temporary hit points generated by Adrenaline Rush scale incredibly well on a Barbarian. Because a Raging Barbarian resists bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, those 2 to 6 temporary hit points are effectively doubled in value against most physical attacks. It’s a free, scaling buffer that keeps your d12 Hit Die entirely intact during the opening rounds of combat.
Finally, there is the legendary combination of the Orc's Relentless Endurance and the Barbarian's massive health pool. Dropping to 1 HP instead of 0 once per long rest is a phenomenal safety net. When paired with the Path of the Zealot subclass, you become a frontline Striker that simply refuses to die, forcing the Dungeon Master to burn high-level spell slots on you while the rest of your party operates unimpeded.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Assign your racial stat bonuses to push Strength to 17 (+2) and Dexterity to 14 (+1). This perfectly maximizes the +2 Dexterity cap on medium armor, allowing you to wear Scale Mail for a respectable 16 AC while ignoring your mediocre Unarmored Defense. At level 1, your primary tactic is straightforward: use your bonus action to Rage, and swing a heavy weapon. At level 2, Reckless Attack comes online. Use it constantly; your massive hit point pool and Rage resistance will absorb the incoming advantage attacks. At level 3, select Path of the Zealot. Divine Fury adds 1d6 + half your Barbarian level in radiant or necrotic damage to your first hit each turn, cementing your Striker role. At level 4, take the Slasher feat, rounding your Strength to 18 and allowing your Halberd strikes to reduce enemy speeds by 10 feet.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 is a massive power spike. Extra Attack doubles your base damage output, and Fast Movement increases your base speed to 40 feet. When you use Adrenaline Rush, your Dash now covers 80 feet of ground—no enemy wizard is safe. At level 6, Fanatical Focus gives you a crucial reroll on a failed saving throw, which you should aggressively hoard for Wisdom saves against spells like Hold Person. Level 8 is where we take Great Weapon Master. Because you have a reliable 18 Strength and permanent advantage from Reckless Attack, the -5 penalty to hit is easily mitigated, turning your Halberd strikes into catastrophic +10 damage blows.
Levels 11-16
Level 11 brings Relentless Rage, creating a beautiful redundancy with your Orcish Relentless Endurance. When reduced to 0 HP, always use Relentless Rage first while the Constitution save DC is a manageable 10 or 15. Save your automatic, guaranteed Relentless Endurance for when the DC hits 20. At level 12, take the Resilient (Wisdom) feat to bump your Wisdom to 13 and gain proficiency in Wisdom saves. By level 14, Path of the Zealot grants Rage Beyond Death. You literally cannot fall unconscious from hit point loss while Raging. Between Adrenaline Rush, Relentless Endurance, Relentless Rage, and Rage Beyond Death, you are the most durable creature in Tier 3 play. At level 16, use your Ability Score Improvement to cap your Strength at 20.
Levels 17-20
Tier 4 Barbarian progression is notoriously slow, relying heavily on Brutal Critical which mathematically adds very little DPR. However, sticking it out to Level 20 rewards you with Primal Champion. Your Strength and Constitution both increase by 4, breaking the normal stat cap to reach 24. Your Great Weapon Master attacks now hit with a +13 modifier (even with the -5 penalty applied), dealing terrifying, consistent damage. Your passive Adrenaline Rush temp HP is now 6, effectively 12 HP against physical attacks, providing constant padding in the brutal combats of Tier 4.
Recommended Feats
Great Weapon Master
Take this at Level 8. As a Barbarian, Reckless Attack provides at-will advantage, mathematically canceling out the -5 attack penalty against most enemy Armor Classes. The flat +10 damage applies to every hit, drastically elevating your Striker potential. Furthermore, if you drop an enemy to 0 HP or score a critical hit, GWM grants a bonus action attack, giving you an excellent alternative use for your bonus action when Adrenaline Rush is depleted or unnecessary.
Slasher
Take this at Level 4. Assuming you started with a 15 Strength and applied a +2 racial bonus, Slasher provides the final +1 needed to reach an 18 Strength modifier. More importantly, the 10-foot speed reduction applies once per turn when you deal slashing damage. If you Adrenaline Rush into a spellcaster's face and hit them with a Halberd, their movement speed drops, making it incredibly difficult for them to kite away from your 40-foot Fast Movement base speed.
Resilient (Wisdom)
Take this at Level 12. A Barbarian's greatest weakness is getting hit by Dominate Person or Hypnotic Pattern, turning your massive d12 hit die and Great Weapon Master damage against your own party. Gaining proficiency in Wisdom saving throws, combined with your Zealot Fanatical Focus reroll, ensures you stay in control of your character during high-level encounters.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Ditch the Unarmored Defense trap; your 14 Constitution and 14 Dexterity only provide an AC of 14. Buy Scale Mail immediately for 16 AC. Wield a Halberd or Glaive to prepare for the Slasher feat, and carry a dozen Javelins. While Adrenaline Rush solves your mobility gap, you still need Javelins to maintain Rage on turns where flying enemies remain completely out of reach.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Upgrade to Half-Plate armor to cap your AC at 17. Seek out a +1 Halberd to offset the Great Weapon Master penalty. A Cloak of Protection is mathematically superior to a Ring of Protection here, as it doesn't occupy a ring slot you'll want later, and the +1 to AC and Saving Throws is vital for protecting your vulnerable mental stats.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
You want a Belt of Fire Giant Strength. Jumping your Strength from 18 directly to 25 completely nullifies the Great Weapon Master penalty, ensuring your Reckless Attacks almost never miss. Pair this with a Ring of Free Action to completely ignore difficult terrain and spells like Hold Person, ensuring your Adrenaline Rush dash always reaches its target.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Hunt for a Blood Fury Tattoo. The 4d6 necrotic damage and corresponding healing apply on a hit, and you can trigger it 10 times a day. Since you are Reckless Attacking for permanent advantage, your critical hit chance is roughly 9.75% per swing. Save the Blood Fury charges for those crits to double the necrotic dice to 8d6, resulting in massive burst healing that keeps you alive when Relentless Endurance is exhausted.
Party Composition
As an Orc Zealot Barbarian, your role is the primary Striker and frontline anchor. You are designed to draw aggro, soak physical damage with Rage and Adrenaline Rush temporary HP, and crush priority targets with Great Weapon Master. However, you lack crowd control and area-of-effect damage, making your party synergies highly dependent on controllers and enablers.
You pair exceptionally well with an Order Domain Cleric. Their Voice of Authority feature allows you to make a reaction attack whenever they cast a spell on you (like Healing Word or Bless). Because the Zealot's Divine Fury damage applies to the first creature you hit on each of your turns, this reaction attack happens outside your turn, allowing you to trigger the Divine Fury bonus damage a second time in the same combat round.
A Chronurgy or Divination Wizard is your best friend for locking down the battlefield. When they cast Web or Hypnotic Pattern, you can use your Adrenaline Rush bonus action to seamlessly navigate around the hazard, isolating the enemies that succeeded on their saving throws and deleting them with advantage-fueled Great Weapon Master strikes.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 3 (Battle Master)
Taking three levels of Fighter is a premier choice after Barbarian 6. The Great Weapon Fighting style slightly bumps your Halberd damage. Action Surge allows for four attacks in a single turn, resulting in monstrous burst damage. Most importantly, Battle Master maneuvers like Precision Attack can be declared after you roll but before the DM declares a miss, allowing you to salvage Great Weapon Master swings that fall just short of the enemy's AC.
Peace Domain Cleric 1
A single-level dip into Peace Cleric is surprisingly potent for an Orc Barbarian. Emboldening Bond scales with your Proficiency Bonus, not your Cleric level, and grants a 1d4 bonus to attacks and saves. Crucially, Emboldening Bond is not a spell and does not require concentration, meaning you can activate it and perfectly maintain it while Raging. This 1d4 completely stacks with the 1d4 from a party member's Bless, trivializing Great Weapon Master penalties.
Common Pitfalls
- Hoarding Relentless Endurance: Players often treat dropping to 1 HP as an absolute last resort and play too cautiously. You are a d12 Barbarian; trust your health pool. Reckless Attack aggressively, and let Relentless Endurance do its job as a safety net.
- Blowing Adrenaline Rush on Turn 1: Unless the enemy is exactly 60 feet away, use your bonus action to Rage on Turn 1. If you Adrenaline Rush on Turn 1 but can't make an attack or take damage, your Rage will immediately end. Rage first, move normally, and use Adrenaline Rush on Turn 2 to close remaining gaps.
- Falling for the Unarmored Defense trap: With an optimal stat array of 15 STR, 13 DEX, and 14 CON, your Unarmored AC is a miserable 13. Wear Medium Armor. Half-plate gives you an AC of 17, which drastically increases your survivability when granting enemies advantage via Reckless Attack.
- Ignoring ranged options entirely: Even with an 80-foot Adrenaline Rush dash, you cannot hit a flying dragon with a Halberd. Always carry a stack of Javelins. Throwing a Javelin using Strength keeps your Rage alive, even if the target is flying 100 feet in the air.
