Why Thief?

The Orc Thief Rogue is a fantastic blend of brutal survivability and unparalleled utility. As a Striker, your main job is to slip in, deal massive Sneak Attack damage, and get out safely. With an optimal Dexterity of 15, your physical coordination is top-notch, while a solid Intelligence of 14 helps you investigate and spot hidden traps. Orc traits like Adrenaline Rush allow you to Dash as a bonus action while gaining temporary hit points, ensuring you can cross the battlefield instantly to strike a target without sacrificing your defenses.

When you select the Thief subclass at level 3, you gain access to Fast Hands, which lets you use your bonus action to disarm traps, pick locks, or use items in the middle of combat. Combine this with Second-Story Work to climb walls at your full movement speed, and your Orc becomes an unstoppable parkour specialist who can easily scale buildings to gain the high ground or snatch valuable loot.

If things ever go south, your Orc heritage keeps you alive in the thick of battle. Relentless Endurance prevents you from falling unconscious once per day, leaving you at 1 hit point instead—just enough time to use your swift Rogue movement to retreat, hide, and strike back from the shadows.

Thief Features

Fast Hands

Level 3

You can use the bonus action granted by your Cunning Action to make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check, use your thieves' tools to disarm a trap or open a lock, or take the Use an Object action.

Second-Story Work

Level 3

You gain the ability to climb faster than normal; climbing no longer costs you extra movement. In addition, when you make a running jump, the distance you cover increases by a number of feet equal to your Dexterity modifier.

Supreme Sneak

Level 9

You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks if you move no more than half your speed on the same turn.

Use Magic Device

Level 13

You have learned enough about how magic works that you can improvise the use of magic items. You ignore all class, race, and level requirements on the use of magic items.

Thief's Reflexes

Level 17

You have become adept at laying ambushes and quickly escaping danger. You can take two turns during the first round of any combat. You take your first turn at your normal initiative and your second turn at your initiative minus 10. You can't use this feature when you are surprised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thief a good subclass for Orc Rogue?
Yes, it is an incredibly durable and versatile choice. While Rogues are typically fragile, the Orc's Relentless Endurance and Adrenaline Rush provide much-needed tankiness for a frontline Striker. When paired with the Thief’s Fast Hands and Second-Story Work, you get a highly mobile, hard-to-kill scout who can navigate any vertical terrain and manipulate the battlefield using clever items.
What makes Thief different from other Rogue subclasses?
The Thief specializes in environmental interaction, vertical mobility, and item versatility rather than magic or pure stealth. While other subclasses focus on illusions or assassinations, the Thief excels at climbing effortlessly with Second-Story Work and using objects during combat via Fast Hands. Later, Use Magic Device even lets you ignore class restrictions on magical items, making you incredibly adaptable.
