Why Illusionist?

Typically, Wizards are fragile "glass cannons" who must hide in the back of the party. However, playing an Orc Illusionist completely changes this dynamic. As a battlefield controller, your primary goal is to deceive and distract your enemies. With your high Intelligence, your illusory spells will be incredibly difficult for enemies to see through.

When foes do manage to pierce your trickery and target you, your Orc traits provide unparalleled defense. If a monster manages to bypass your illusions and land a lethal blow, Relentless Endurance keeps you standing at 1 hit point instead of knocking you unconscious. Furthermore, if you find yourself surrounded, Adrenaline Rush allows you to escape as a bonus action while granting you temporary hit points to absorb incoming damage.

This incredible durability allows you to play more aggressively than other wizards. You can confidently deploy your Improved Illusions to block choke points, knowing that even if your magic is bypassed, your Orcish heritage will keep you safe and in control of the fight.

Illusionist Features

Illusion Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy illusion spells into your spellbook is halved.

Improved Illusions

Level 3

You learn the Minor Illusion cantrip if you don't already know it. When you cast Minor Illusion, you can create both a sound and an image with a single casting. Additionally, your illusion spells are harder to see through.

Phantasmal Creatures

Level 6

When you cast an illusion spell that creates a creature or object, you can imbue it with a semblance of life. The illusion can make sounds, move, and even interact with the environment in basic ways, making it much harder for creatures to identify it as an illusion.

Illusory Self

Level 10

As a reaction when a creature makes an attack roll against you, you can create an illusory duplicate of yourself. The attack automatically misses you, then the illusion dissipates. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Illusory Reality

Level 14

When you cast an illusion spell of 1st level or higher, you can choose one inanimate, nonmagical object that is part of the illusion and make that object real. The object can't deal damage or directly harm anyone. The object remains real for 1 minute, regardless of the illusion's duration. If the illusion ends before 1 minute, the object persists for the remainder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Illusionist a good subclass for Orc Wizard?
Yes, it is an excellent combination! Traditional Wizards suffer from low hit points and poor mobility. The Orc's Adrenaline Rush and Relentless Endurance perfectly cover these weaknesses. This added durability allows you to position yourself boldly on the battlefield to cast your mind-bending illusions without the constant fear of being easily defeated in close combat.
What makes Illusionist different from other Wizard subclasses?
While other Wizard subclasses focus on raw damage or raw defense, the Illusionist specializes in mind games and battlefield manipulation. You excel at creating obstacles, distractions, and tricking your foes. At later levels, you can even make your illusions temporarily real, allowing you to bridge gaps or trap enemies with nothing but your imagination.
