Why Diviner?

As a Diviner Wizard, your primary role is a Controller, shaping the battlefield to your party's advantage. Your signature tool is Portent, a feature that lets you roll two twenty-sided dice at the start of the day and save the results. You can swap these numbers in for almost any roll later on. If you rolled a 2, you can force a dangerous enemy to fail their saving throw against your spells. With a starting Intelligence of 15, your spells will already be tough to resist, but Portent makes them guaranteed.

Wizards are traditionally fragile, but the Orc species traits provide the ultimate survival kit. If an enemy breaks through your front line, you can use Adrenaline Rush to sprint away as a bonus action, gaining temporary hit points to cushion any damage. If you do take a massive hit, Relentless Endurance stops you from falling unconscious once per day, leaving you standing with 1 hit point so you can cast a spell to turn the tide.

Diviner Features

Divination Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy divination spells into your spellbook is halved.

Portent

Level 3

When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll. Each foretelling roll can be used only once. You gain a new set of rolls when you finish a long rest.

Expert Divination

Level 6

When you cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher using a spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

The Third Eye

Level 10

As an action, you can increase your powers of perception. Choose one of: Darkvision (60 ft), Ethereal Sight (see into the Ethereal Plane within 60 ft), Greater Comprehension (read any language), or See Invisibility (see invisible creatures and objects within 10 ft). The effect lasts until you use this feature again or finish a short or long rest.

Greater Portent

Level 14

You roll three d20s for your Portent feature instead of two.

Pro Tips

1

Use low Portent rolls to guarantee enemies fail their saving throws against your major crowd-control spells.

2

Activate Adrenaline Rush to quickly reposition to safety without wasting your main action, keeping your spellcasting free.

3

Save your high Portent rolls to guarantee that your allies land their most devastating attacks or pass crucial saving throws.

4

Cast divination spells often; Expert Divination will refund your lower-level spell slots, keeping you armed with defensive magic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Diviner a good subclass for Orc Wizard?
Yes, it is a fantastic combination. The Diviner is a top-tier controller subclass but lacks defensive features. The Orc's physical traits—specifically Relentless Endurance and Adrenaline Rush—provide a powerful safety net, giving you the mobility and survivability needed to stay alive while you manipulate fate with your Portent dice.
What makes Diviner different from other Wizard subclasses?
While other Wizards focus on blasting enemies with elemental magic, the Diviner specializes in manipulating luck and gathering information. Features like Portent take the randomness out of the game by letting you decide dice rolls in advance, making you the ultimate tactical planner.
