Why Diviner?

As a Gnome Diviner Wizard, your job is to control the flow of battle by knowing what happens before it actually does. The core of this playstyle revolves around the Portent feature, which lets you roll dice at the start of the day and swap them in for actual rolls later. For a beginner, this is the ultimate controller tool: you can force an enemy to fail a saving throw against your spells, or guarantee a teammate lands a critical hit.

Your Gnome heritage makes you incredibly resilient while you manipulate fate. Thanks to Gnomish Cunning, you gain advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic. This means while you are busy maintaining concentration on powerful crowd-control spells, enemy spellcasters will have an incredibly hard time shutting you down.

This combination of magic resistance and fate manipulation allows you to play defensively while dictating the entire battlefield. Whether you are using your Darkvision to spot threats in the shadows or utilizing Expert Divination to regain spell slots when casting mind-reading magic, this build ensures you are always three steps ahead of your foes.

Diviner Features

Divination Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy divination spells into your spellbook is halved.

Portent

Level 3

When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll. Each foretelling roll can be used only once. You gain a new set of rolls when you finish a long rest.

Expert Divination

Level 6

When you cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher using a spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

The Third Eye

Level 10

As an action, you can increase your powers of perception. Choose one of: Darkvision (60 ft), Ethereal Sight (see into the Ethereal Plane within 60 ft), Greater Comprehension (read any language), or See Invisibility (see invisible creatures and objects within 10 ft). The effect lasts until you use this feature again or finish a short or long rest.

Greater Portent

Level 14

You roll three d20s for your Portent feature instead of two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Diviner a good subclass for Gnome Wizard?
Yes, the Gnome Diviner is an outstanding combination. Diviner Wizards rely heavily on staying conscious and maintaining concentration to manipulate fate. Gnomish Cunning provides crucial mental saving throw advantages, protecting you from enemy mind-control and status conditions. Meanwhile, your natural Gnome intelligence boosts your spell accuracy, ensuring your Portent dice and control spells land with devastating reliability.
What makes Diviner different from other Wizard subclasses?
