Why Diviner?

As a Divination Wizard, your primary job is to control the battlefield by knowing what happens before it actually occurs. Your defining subclass feature, Portent, lets you roll two dice at the start of the day and swap them in for any future d20 roll. If you roll a low number, you can force a terrifying monster to fail its save against your spells; if you roll high, you can guarantee a critical hit for your party's rogue.

While Wizards are traditionally known for being fragile, playing a Dwarf completely changes this dynamic. Thanks to the Dwarven Toughness trait, you gain extra hit points at every single level, making you significantly harder to take down. Additionally, Dwarven Resilience gives you advantage on saving throws against poison, ensuring you stay standing to maintain concentration on your control spells.

This synergy transforms you into a sturdy battlefield controller. While other Wizards must hide in fear, your optimal stats of 14 Constitution and your dwarven heritage let you confidently hold the frontline, using your foresight to orchestrate victory while shrugging off attacks that would easily fell a weaker spellcaster.

Diviner Features

Divination Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy divination spells into your spellbook is halved.

Portent

Level 3

When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll. Each foretelling roll can be used only once. You gain a new set of rolls when you finish a long rest.

Expert Divination

Level 6

When you cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher using a spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

The Third Eye

Level 10

As an action, you can increase your powers of perception. Choose one of: Darkvision (60 ft), Ethereal Sight (see into the Ethereal Plane within 60 ft), Greater Comprehension (read any language), or See Invisibility (see invisible creatures and objects within 10 ft). The effect lasts until you use this feature again or finish a short or long rest.

Greater Portent

Level 14

You roll three d20s for your Portent feature instead of two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Diviner a good subclass for Dwarf Wizard?
Yes, it is an outstanding combination. Diviner Wizards excel at controlling the battlefield, but they are often targeted by enemies who want to break their concentration. The Dwarf's innate sturdiness, provided by Dwarven Toughness and Dwarven Resilience, gives you the defensive boost needed to survive dangerous encounters while you manipulate destiny with your Portent dice.
What makes Diviner different from other Wizard subclasses?
While other Wizards focus on blowing up enemies, the Diviner specializes in absolute control over luck and information. Through features like Portent and Expert Divination, you can substitute roll results to guarantee success or failure, and regain spell slots just for casting informational spells. You don't just react to the game; you dictate how it plays out.
