Why Evoker?

Choosing a Dwarf for your Evocation Wizard creates a surprisingly durable "blaster" who can survive the chaos of the front lines. Wizards are traditionally fragile, but your 14 Constitution paired with Dwarven Toughness provides extra hit points at every single level, helping you survive stray arrows and enemy ambushes. Additionally, Dwarven Resilience gives you advantage on saving throws against poison, protecting you from common dungeon threats while you focus on channeling raw destructive energy.

As an Evoker, your main job is to deal massive damage. At level 6, your Sculpt Spells feature allows you to carve out safe zones inside your explosive spells like Fireball. This means you can drop massive fiery explosions right on top of your allies without hurting them. While other Wizards must stay far away to avoid getting caught in their own crossfire, your dwarven durability allows you to position yourself closer to the action to line up the perfect shot.

Evoker Features

Evocation Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy evocation spells into your spellbook is halved.

Potent Cantrip

Level 3

When a creature succeeds on a saving throw against your cantrip, the creature takes half the cantrip's damage (if any) but suffers no additional effect from the cantrip.

Sculpt Spells

Level 6

When you cast an evocation spell that affects other creatures you can see, you can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell's level. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell and take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.

Empowered Evocation

Level 10

You can add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any wizard evocation spell you cast.

Overchannel

Level 14

When you cast a wizard spell of 1st through 5th level that deals damage, you can deal maximum damage with that spell. The first time you use this feature, you take no ill effects. Each additional time before you finish a long rest, you take 2d12 necrotic damage per spell level immediately after casting. This damage ignores resistance and immunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Evoker a good subclass for Dwarf Wizard?
Yes, it is an excellent combination! Wizards normally suffer from low health, but the Dwarf's natural toughness and poison resistance compensate for this weakness. This allows you to play a more aggressive, front-line Blaster, getting closer to enemies to unleash devastating spells without worrying about falling unconscious in a single hit.
What makes Evoker different from other Wizard subclasses?
The Evoker specializes in pure offensive destruction, making it the ultimate "Blaster" subclass. While other Wizards focus on utility or illusion, Evokers gain unique abilities like Sculpt Spells to protect their friends from their own explosive magic, and Empowered Evocation to add their Intelligence modifier to their damage rolls.
