Why Evoker?

Choosing an Elf for your Evoker Wizard creates a highly resilient "Blaster"—a spellcaster who specializes in dealing massive area-of-effect damage. Evokers love to blow things up, but doing so often puts them in danger. This is where your Elf heritage shines. With Fey Ancestry, you gain advantage on saving throws against being charmed and outright immunity to sleep magic. This protection keeps you conscious and in control of the battlefield, ensuring you never miss a turn to rain down fire on your enemies.

As you level up, you will unlock the Sculpt Spells feature. This is the bread and butter of the Evoker, allowing you to create pockets of safety within your explosive spells (like Fireball) so your allies don't take damage. Because your Elf's Trance trait allows you to complete a long rest in just four hours, you will have plenty of time during the night to prepare your spellbook, scribe scrolls, and plan out your devastating tactical strikes while the rest of the party sleeps.

Evoker Features

Evocation Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy evocation spells into your spellbook is halved.

Potent Cantrip

Level 3

When a creature succeeds on a saving throw against your cantrip, the creature takes half the cantrip's damage (if any) but suffers no additional effect from the cantrip.

Sculpt Spells

Level 6

When you cast an evocation spell that affects other creatures you can see, you can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell's level. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell and take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.

Empowered Evocation

Level 10

You can add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any wizard evocation spell you cast.

Overchannel

Level 14

When you cast a wizard spell of 1st through 5th level that deals damage, you can deal maximum damage with that spell. The first time you use this feature, you take no ill effects. Each additional time before you finish a long rest, you take 2d12 necrotic damage per spell level immediately after casting. This damage ignores resistance and immunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Evoker a good subclass for Elf Wizard?
Yes, it is an excellent choice. Elves naturally make fantastic Wizards thanks to their high sensory awareness. Traits like Fey Ancestry prevent enemies from shutting down your spellcasting with mind-control or sleep spells, while Trance gives you more active time to prepare your magic. This ensures your Evoker can safely focus on what they do best: dealing massive, explosive damage without interruption.
What makes Evoker different from other Wizard subclasses?
While other Wizard subclasses focus on utility, illusions, or summoning, the Evoker specializes in pure, destructive offensive power. Features like Sculpt Spells let you drop massive explosions directly onto your allies without hurting them. Later, you gain Potent Cantrip to ensure your basic spells always deal damage, and Empowered Evocation to add your Intelligence modifier directly to your damage rolls.
