Why Abjurer?

Wizards are traditionally known as fragile "glass cannons," but the Abjurer turns this stereotype on its head by acting as a powerful magical defender. Your core subclass feature, Arcane Ward, creates a magical shield that absorbs incoming damage whenever you cast protective spells. Supported by a solid Constitution score of 14, this ward ensures you can take a hit and keep your concentration on vital spells without folding under pressure.

Playing an Elf elevates your defensive capabilities even further. Your Fey Ancestry grants you advantage on saving throws against being charmed and outright immunity to sleep magic. Since a disabled Wizard cannot protect their party, these innate elven resistances ensure you stay awake and in control of the battlefield, even when facing powerful enemy spellcasters.

As you level up, your defensive role expands. You will eventually be able to extend your protective barrier to nearby teammates using Projected Ward, shielding them from deadly blows. Between your elven senses keeping you alert and your magical wards absorbing punishment, you serve as the ultimate magical bodyguard.

Abjurer Features

Abjuration Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy abjuration spells into your spellbook is halved.

Arcane Ward

Level 3

When you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, you can create a magical ward on yourself. The ward has hit points equal to twice your wizard level + your Intelligence modifier. Whenever you take damage, the ward takes the damage instead. If the damage reduces the ward to 0 hit points, you take any remaining damage. When you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, the ward regains hit points equal to twice the spell's level.

Projected Ward

Level 6

When a creature you can see within 30 feet takes damage, you can use your reaction to cause your Arcane Ward to absorb that damage. If the damage reduces the ward to 0 hit points, the warded creature takes any remaining damage.

Spell Breaker

Level 10

When you cast the Counterspell or Dispel Magic spell, you add your proficiency bonus to your ability check if one is required.

Spell Resistance

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Abjurer a good subclass for Elf Wizard?
Absolutely. Elves make fantastic Abjurers because their natural traits shore up a Wizard's typical weaknesses. Fey Ancestry protects you from mind-controlling spells that could force you to drop your concentration, while Trance keeps you alert during rests. This allows you to focus your high Intelligence (starting at 15) on maintaining your protective Arcane Ward and keeping your party safe.
What makes Abjurer different from other Wizard subclasses?
While most Wizards focus on dealing damage or controlling enemies, the Abjurer specializes in defense and negation. Through features like Arcane Ward and Spell Breaker, you excel at absorbing damage, countering enemy spellcasters, and protecting your allies. You play more like a magical guardian or defender than a glass-cannon blaster.
