Why Abjurer?

As an Abjurer Wizard, your job is to act as your party's magical shield. While most wizards are fragile glass cannons, you use your Arcane Ward to absorb incoming damage that would normally deplete your hit points. What makes a Halfling so exceptional in this defender role is their innate survivability, which helps patch up the wizard's typical weaknesses.

Thanks to your Luck trait, you can reroll devastating natural 1s on your saving throws, ensuring you rarely fail crucial concentration checks. Furthermore, your Brave trait makes you highly resistant to being frightened, keeping you clear-headed when enemies try to disrupt your spells. At higher levels, when you unlock Projected Ward, your Halfling Nimbleness allows you to slip through the spaces of larger creatures to position yourself perfectly next to the ally who needs your protection.

Abjurer Features

Abjuration Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy abjuration spells into your spellbook is halved.

Arcane Ward

Level 3

When you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, you can create a magical ward on yourself. The ward has hit points equal to twice your wizard level + your Intelligence modifier. Whenever you take damage, the ward takes the damage instead. If the damage reduces the ward to 0 hit points, you take any remaining damage. When you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, the ward regains hit points equal to twice the spell's level.

Projected Ward

Level 6

When a creature you can see within 30 feet takes damage, you can use your reaction to cause your Arcane Ward to absorb that damage. If the damage reduces the ward to 0 hit points, the warded creature takes any remaining damage.

Spell Breaker

Level 10

When you cast the Counterspell or Dispel Magic spell, you add your proficiency bonus to your ability check if one is required.

Spell Resistance

Level 14

You have advantage on saving throws against spells. Furthermore, you have resistance against the damage of spells.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Abjurer a good subclass for Halfling Wizard?
Yes, it is an outstanding combination. Wizards are traditionally fragile, but the Halfling's natural resilience perfectly complements the Abjurer's defensive kit. The Halfling's Luck trait ensures you rarely fail crucial saving throws or lose concentration on key spells, while features like Arcane Ward keep your small-statured wizard alive on the front lines as a sturdy defender.
What makes Abjurer different from other Wizard subclasses?
While most wizard subclasses focus on blowing up enemies or controlling the battlefield, the Abjurer specializes in negation and protection. You excel at absorbing damage, countering enemy magic, and shielding your allies. Features like Arcane Ward act as a secondary health pool, turning a traditionally squishy spellcaster into a reliable, tank-like defender.
