Why Diviner?

As a Halfling Diviner Wizard, you are the ultimate master of probability. While most spellcasters rely on the random roll of the dice, your unique combination of racial traits and subclass features lets you bend fate to your will. By combining the Halfling's Luck trait—which lets you reroll devastating natural 1s—with the Diviner's signature Portent feature, you ensure that failure is rarely an option for you or your allies.

In combat, your primary role is a Controller, using your magic to dictate the flow of battle. With a high Intelligence of 15 to power your spells and a Constitution of 14 to keep your concentration intact, you can reshape the battlefield. When an enemy tries to resist your crowd-control spells, you can use your saved Portent dice to force them to fail their saving throws automatically.

Defensively, your Halfling heritage keeps you safe. Traits like Brave give you an edge against being frightened, while your small size and Halfling Nimbleness allow you to slip through the spaces of larger enemies to find safety. This makes you a slippery, unpredictable controller who is always one step ahead of the enemy.

Diviner Features

Divination Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy divination spells into your spellbook is halved.

Portent

Level 3

When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll. Each foretelling roll can be used only once. You gain a new set of rolls when you finish a long rest.

Expert Divination

Level 6

When you cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher using a spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

The Third Eye

Level 10

As an action, you can increase your powers of perception. Choose one of: Darkvision (60 ft), Ethereal Sight (see into the Ethereal Plane within 60 ft), Greater Comprehension (read any language), or See Invisibility (see invisible creatures and objects within 10 ft). The effect lasts until you use this feature again or finish a short or long rest.

Greater Portent

Level 14

You roll three d20s for your Portent feature instead of two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Diviner a good subclass for Halfling Wizard?
Absolutely. The Halfling Diviner is one of the most mechanically synergistic builds in D&D 5e. Your Halfling Luck prevents you from fumbling your own spells, while the Diviner’s Portent feature lets you dictate the rolls of everyone else on the battlefield. Together, they eliminate the unpredictability of the dice, making you an incredibly reliable controller who keeps the party safe.
What makes Diviner different from other Wizard subclasses?
Unlike other Wizards who focus on raw damage or conjuring monsters, the Diviner specializes in information gathering and manipulating fate. Through features like Portent and Expert Divination, you gain the unique ability to foresee the future, substitute dice rolls, and regain spell slots just for casting informational magic. You don't just react to the battlefield—you rewrite destiny.
