Why Diviner?

At a glance, the Aasimar Wizard earns a 5/10 base synergy because the species lacks native Intelligence bonuses in legacy rules. However, under Tasha's flexible ability scores, an Aasimar Diviner is a terrifying battlefield controller. You aren't just casting spells; you are rewriting reality with Portent, and Celestial Revelation ensures you survive long enough to do it.

The Diviner's primary weakness is their d6 Hit Die and lack of armor. When you force a boss to fail a save against Banishment using a low Portent roll, you become public enemy number one. Popping your Radiant Soul or Radiant Consumption flight keeps you out of melee reach, while Celestial Resistance drastically mitigates incoming radiant and necrotic damage. Furthermore, the Aasimar's Healing Hands gives this Wizard a rare, resource-free emergency heal to pick up a downed Cleric without needing to multiclass.

Once you hit the mid-game, Expert Divination completely changes your spell economy. You can cast Mind Spike to deal damage and instantly refund a lower-level spell slot, ensuring you always have enough juice for defensive staples like Shield or Absorb Elements.

Diviner Features

Divination Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy divination spells into your spellbook is halved.

Portent

Level 3

When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll. Each foretelling roll can be used only once. You gain a new set of rolls when you finish a long rest.

Expert Divination

Level 6

When you cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher using a spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

The Third Eye

Level 10

As an action, you can increase your powers of perception. Choose one of: Darkvision (60 ft), Ethereal Sight (see into the Ethereal Plane within 60 ft), Greater Comprehension (read any language), or See Invisibility (see invisible creatures and objects within 10 ft). The effect lasts until you use this feature again or finish a short or long rest.

Greater Portent

Level 14

You roll three d20s for your Portent feature instead of two.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)

Levels 1-4

Start with INT 15, CON 14, and DEX 13. At level 2, you gain your defining features: Portent and Divination Savant (fully online and dictating encounters by level 3). Roll your two Portent d20s every morning. Save low rolls to force enemies to fail against Tasha's Hideous Laughter or Hold Person. Save high rolls to guarantee your own concentration saves. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat to bump your INT to 16. Select Gift of Alacrity—it's a Divination spell that practically guarantees you go first.

Levels 5-10

Level 5 brings 3rd-level spells like Hypnotic Pattern. At level 6, Expert Divination comes online. This is where you spam Mind Spike (a 2nd-level Divination spell) to recover 1st-level slots for Shield. By level 9, you unlock 5th-level spells; Wall of Force is your primary target here. At level 10, you gain The Third Eye. Since your Aasimar species already grants 60 feet of Darkvision, never choose the Darkvision option here—always activate See Invisibility or Ethereal Sight before venturing into a dungeon.

Levels 11-16

Level 11 unlocks 6th-level magic like Mass Suggestion. At level 12, take Resilient (Constitution) to bump your CON to 15 and gain proficiency in Constitution saving throws, securing your concentration while flying via Celestial Revelation. Level 13 brings 7th-level spells like Forcecage. Level 14 is a massive power spike: Greater Portent grants you a third d20 each morning. Having three dice means you can confidently burn one on an ally's critical attack roll without leaving yourself vulnerable.

Levels 17-20

Level 17 is the pinnacle of your career, granting access to 9th-level spells. Take Foresight—it is the ultimate Divination spell and lasts 8 hours without concentration. Combined with your Aasimar flight and three Portent dice, you are virtually unkillable. At level 19, cap your Intelligence at 20 or take Alert to ensure your crowd-control spells land before enemies can spread out.

Recommended Spells

Cantrips

Take Mind Sliver. It forces an Intelligence save and subtracts 1d4 from the target's next saving throw. Hit a boss with Mind Sliver, then use a low Portent roll on your next turn to guarantee they fail a high-level spell save. Minor Illusion and Fire Bolt round out your utility and range.

Level 1-2 Spells

Silvery Barbs is mandatory; it effectively acts as a mini-Portent. Mind Spike is your bread-and-butter damage spell purely because it triggers Expert Divination to refund a 1st-level slot. Hold Person is deadly when you can guarantee a failure with a Portent roll of 4.

Level 3-5 Spells

Clairvoyance and Arcane Eye are cheap to copy thanks to Divination Savant and provide flawless scouting. Hypnotic Pattern is your premium crowd control. At 4th level, Banishment is your go-to save-or-suck to pair with Portent. At 5th level, Rary's Telepathic Bond is an excellent divination ritual.

High-Level Spells

Mass Suggestion (6th) doesn't require concentration, making it a perfect opener. Forcecage (7th) ignores saving throws entirely. Foresight (9th) is the capstone Divination spell, granting advantage on nearly everything you do while imposing disadvantage on attacks against you.

Recommended Feats

Fey Touched

Take this at level 4. Bumping your INT by +1 is crucial, but getting Misty Step and a 1st-level Divination or Enchantment spell is the real prize. Choose Gift of Alacrity. Since it's a Divination spell, casting it with a 2nd-level slot later in the day will trigger Expert Divination.

Resilient (Constitution)

Take this at level 12. As a flying Controller, if you lose concentration on Banishment, the fight turns against you instantly. Proficiency in CON saves ensures your spells stick, and it rounds out an odd CON score if you planned your stats accordingly.

Alert

Take this at level 16. A Diviner's job is to drop a debilitating area-of-effect spell before the enemy acts. +5 to Initiative, combined with Gift of Alacrity, guarantees you'll dictate the terms of the battlefield before the melee combatants mix it up.

Gear Progression

Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)

Seek out an Arcane Grimoire +1. Raising your spell save DC is paramount, even if you rely on Portent, because you only get two Portent dice per day. Stockpile gold to copy early Divination spells utilizing your Divination Savant discount.

Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)

A Cloak of Displacement is incredible for an Aasimar. While flying with Celestial Revelation, ranged attacks are your only threat; imposing disadvantage on them keeps your concentration safe. Grab a Pearl of Power to keep your spell slots topped off.

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

The Robe of the Archmagi is the holy grail. It fixes your AC, boosts your spell save DC, and gives you advantage on saving throws against spells. Pair this with your Aasimar Celestial Resistance, and you become a phenomenal anti-mage.

Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)

Look for a Crystal Ball of True Telepathy. It perfectly fits the Diviner aesthetic, allowing you to cast Scrying at will and communicate telepathically with anyone you observe, leaning fully into your role as the all-seeing eye of the party.

Party Composition

The Aasimar Diviner is the ultimate Controller and Enabler. Your job isn't to deal massive DPR; your DPR of 7.8 at level 5 is irrelevant when you can use Portent to hand your allies guaranteed critical hits or force bosses to fail saves. You thrive when paired with high-burst martial characters who can capitalize on the conditions you inflict.

Pair this build with a Paladin (Oath of Vengeance) or an Assassin Rogue. If you cast Hold Person and use a low Portent to ensure the enemy fails, your Paladin or Rogue gets guaranteed critical hits on their melee attacks. The Paladin's Divine Smite or the Rogue's Sneak Attack will obliterate the paralyzed target in a single turn.

Multiclass Options

Artificer 1 Dip

Taking your first level in Artificer gives you medium armor, shields, and Constitution saving throw proficiency without delaying your spell slot progression. An Aasimar Diviner with 19 AC (Half-Plate + Shield) flying out of reach is an absolute nightmare for a DM.

Cleric (Knowledge Domain) 1 Dip

A 1-level dip into Knowledge Cleric fits the Diviner theme perfectly. You gain medium armor, shields, and double proficiency in two Intelligence skills (like Arcana and History). Plus, you get access to Guidance and Healing Word, which stacks nicely with your Aasimar Healing Hands.

Common Pitfalls

  • Using Portent after the roll: You must declare Portent before the die is rolled. If the DM rolls a 19 and you say "I use my Portent of 4," you're too late. Pay attention to initiative!
  • Wasting The Third Eye on Darkvision: Your Aasimar species already gives you 60 feet of Darkvision. Always choose See Invisibility or Ethereal Sight when activating your level 10 feature.
  • Misunderstanding Expert Divination: You cannot refund a slot of the same level you cast. Casting a 2nd-level Mind Spike refunds a 1st-level slot. You can't chain 2nd-level spells infinitely.
  • Forgetting Healing Hands requires an Action: Don't try to use your Aasimar heal as a bonus action. Save it for when you have no other options to revive a downed ally, as casting a leveled spell is usually a better use of your action.

More Questions

Can I use Portent on Initiative rolls?
Yes. Initiative is a Dexterity ability check. You can use a high Portent roll on yourself to guarantee you go first and cast Hypnotic Pattern, or a low roll on an enemy to push them to the bottom of the turn order.
Does Expert Divination trigger on ritual casting?
No. The Expert Divination feature specifically states you must cast a divination spell of 2nd level or higher 'using a spell slot'. Ritual casting does not expend a spell slot, so it doesn't trigger the refund.
Does Celestial Resistance stack with Absorb Elements?
Resistance does not stack in 5e. If you have resistance to radiant damage from Celestial Resistance, casting Absorb Elements (if it could target radiant) wouldn't reduce the damage further. Half damage is the maximum reduction via resistance.
Should I use Radiant Soul or Radiant Consumption?
Radiant Soul is vastly superior for a Diviner. Flight is an incredible defensive tool for a squishy Wizard, allowing you to bypass ground hazards and melee combatants. Radiant Consumption is an AoE that requires you to be close to enemies, which you want to avoid.

Pro Tips

1

Always cast See Invisibility with The Third Eye feature instead of Darkvision, since Aasimars already have Darkvision.

2

Spam Mind Spike at level 6 to trigger Expert Divination and endlessly refund your 1st-level Shield slots.

3

Use your Aasimar Healing Hands to revive the party Cleric; Wizards rarely get resource-free healing.

4

Declare your Portent dice before the DM rolls; interrupt them if you plan to use it on a save.

5

Save a Portent roll of 1-4 exclusively for Banishment or Hold Person to instantly remove a boss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Diviner a good subclass for Aasimar Wizard?
With Tasha's floating ability scores, Aasimar is an exceptional race for a Diviner Wizard (rating 5/10 base, but 9/10 optimized). The Celestial Revelation trait grants flight, keeping you out of melee range so you can safely use Portent to control the battlefield from above.
What makes Diviner different from other Wizard subclasses?
Prioritize Intelligence above all else. Start with INT 15 (boosted to 17 with racial modifiers), CON 14, and DEX 13. Maximize INT to 20 by level 8 to ensure your save-or-suck spells land when you run out of Portent dice, then focus on Constitution to protect concentration.
