Why Path of the Zealot?
The Dragonborn Path of the Zealot Barbarian is a spectacular 9/10 Striker build that solves the traditional Barbarian's biggest problem: dealing with hordes. While most Barbarians are locked into single-target melee strikes, your Draconic Ancestry Breath Weapon gives you a reliable AoE option that you can unleash without dropping your Rage. Paired with the Zealot's relentless damage output, you become a versatile threat that controls the battlefield through sheer offensive pressure.
What truly elevates this combination is the staggering durability introduced by the new Path of the Zealot features. At level 3, Warrior of the Gods grants you a 4d12 pool of damage reduction dice. Combine this with the Dragonborn's innate Damage Resistance (which can cover an elemental gap in your standard Rage resistances), and you are practically immortal in Tier 1 combat. You can wade into the thickest part of the fray, soak up hits that would instantly down a Fighter, and retaliate with devastating force.
This build leans heavily into hyper-aggression. Because Zealous Focus allows you to reroll a failed save using your Reaction every turn at level 6, you don't have to play cautiously around enemy spellcasters. You charge the biggest threat, trigger Divine Fury on your first hit for guaranteed extra damage, and trust your divine and draconic bloodlines to keep you standing.
Path of the Zealot Features
Divine Fury
Level 3You can channel divine power into your strikes. On each of your turns while your Rage is active, the first time you hit a target with a weapon attack, you deal extra damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
Warrior of the Gods
Level 3Divine essence helps you sustain yourself in battle. You have a pool of 4d12 Hit Points to draw on. When you take damage, you can spend dice from this pool to reduce the damage taken. You can spend as many dice as you wish (up to the number you have remaining). You regain all spent dice when you finish a Long Rest.
Zealous Focus
Level 6If you fail a saving throw while your Rage is active, you can reroll it by using your Reaction, and you must use the new roll. You can use this feature once per turn.
Zealous Presence
Level 10As a Bonus Action, you let out a battle cry infused with divine energy. Up to ten other creatures of your choice within 60 feet of you that can hear you gain Advantage on attack rolls and saving throws until the start of your next turn.
Rage of the Gods
Level 14When you activate your Rage, you can assume the form of a divine warrior. This form lasts for the duration of your Rage and grants you the following benefits: You gain a Flying Speed equal to your Walking Speed. You have Advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with a stat spread of STR 15, DEX 13, CON 14, INT 10, WIS 12, CHA 8. You are a frontline Striker, so grab a Greataxe or Halberd. At level 3, the Path of the Zealot transforms your damage output. Divine Fury adds extra damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus on your first hit while Raging, making your initial strike incredibly punishing. Simultaneously, Warrior of the Gods gives you a 4d12 pool to reduce incoming damage. Don't hoard these dice—spend them to mitigate big hits and keep your HP high. At level 4, take the Great Weapon Master feat to capitalize on Reckless Attack.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 brings Extra Attack and Fast Movement, cementing your Striker role. At level 6, Zealous Focus comes online, completely changing how you handle spellcasters. Using your Reaction to reroll a failed save once per turn means you can reliably shrug off crippling effects like Hold Person. Use this aggressively. At level 8, take Resilient (Wisdom) to bump your WIS to 13 and add your proficiency bonus to those critical saves, guaranteeing Zealous Focus actually succeeds. Level 10 introduces Zealous Presence; use this Bonus Action battle cry when your party's Rogue or Paladin is lined up for a massive strike, granting up to ten allies Advantage.
Levels 11-16
At level 11, Relentless Rage ensures that even if an enemy chews through your Warrior of the Gods pool, you still refuse to drop. At level 12, take the Dragon Fear feat, allowing you to swap a Breath Weapon use for an AoE frighten effect—an incredible crowd-control tool that Barbarians usually lack. Level 14 is a massive power spike with Rage of the Gods. When you Rage, you now gain a Flying Speed equal to your Walking Speed. This stacks beautifully with your Fast Movement, letting you zoom past the frontline to directly engage flying spellcasters or dragons.
Levels 17-20
In Tier 4, your Brutal Critical dice stack up, making your Great Weapon Master strikes devastating when you roll a 20. At level 16, max out your Strength to 20 with an ASI. At level 20, Primal Champion boosts your STR and CON to 24. With a 24 Strength, your Divine Fury hits are dealing apocalyptic damage, and your massive CON score fuels a gargantuan health pool. Use your Draconic Flight outside of Rage to conserve your Rage of the Gods uses for actual combat.
Recommended Feats
Great Weapon Master
Take this at level 4. The -5 to hit is easily offset by your Reckless Attack, and the +10 damage synergizes perfectly with the guaranteed bonus damage from Divine Fury. When you critically hit or drop an enemy, the bonus action attack keeps your momentum going.
Resilient (Wisdom)
Take this at level 8. Zealous Focus lets you use a Reaction to reroll a failed save, but if your Wisdom save modifier is terrible, a reroll won't save you from a DC 17 spell. Adding proficiency to Wisdom ensures your Zealous Focus rerolls actually turn failures into successes.
Dragon Fear
Take this at level 12. As a Dragonborn, you can replace one of your Breath Weapon attacks with a roar that frightens enemies. Since Barbarians lack crowd control, frightening a group of enemies gives them Disadvantage on attacks against you, effectively doubling the lifespan of your Warrior of the Gods damage reduction pool.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Start with a Greataxe or Greatsword to maximize your base weapon damage before Divine Fury kicks in. Wear Scale Mail until you can afford Half-Plate, as your Unarmored Defense with a 14 CON and 13 DEX won't outpace medium armor yet. Carry a few Javelins for enemies out of your immediate reach.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a +1 Halberd or +1 Greataxe. A Cloak of Protection is vital here; the +1 to all saves makes your Zealous Focus reaction rerolls much more reliable. If your DM offers it, a Dragon's Wrath Weapon (Slumbering) fits your draconic theme perfectly while boosting your Striker DPR.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Hunt for a Belt of Fire Giant Strength. Pushing your Strength to 25 makes your Great Weapon Master attacks land consistently, ensuring your Divine Fury damage is applied every round. A Ring of Free Action is excellent insurance against magical restraints that target stats other than Wisdom.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
Acquire a Blood Fury Tattoo. The extra necrotic damage and healing on a strike stack absurdly well with Divine Fury. A +3 Halberd or a legendary weapon like Gurt's Greataxe will maximize your critical hits when using Reckless Attack. Rely on Rage of the Gods for flight, freeing up your attunement slots for pure damage and durability.
Party Composition
As a Path of the Zealot Barbarian, your role is the primary Striker and damage sponge. You want to dive into the most dangerous cluster of enemies, pop your Breath Weapon, and start hacking. Because of Zealous Presence at level 10, you pair exceptionally well with classes that rely on attack rolls to deal massive burst damage.
A Rogue (particularly an Assassin or Phantom) is your best friend. Popping Zealous Presence as a Bonus Action gives the Rogue guaranteed Advantage on their next turn, ensuring a devastating Sneak Attack without them needing to hide or use Steady Aim. A Circle of the Shepherd Druid is also a phenomenal ally; granting Advantage to a horde of summoned beasts via Zealous Presence can end an encounter in a single round.
You also benefit heavily from a Cleric or Bard who can cast Heroism or Bless on you in Tier 1. While Zealous Focus eventually fixes your saving throw issues, early game support ensures you don't spend your Rage incapacitated.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2 Dip
Taking two levels of Fighter after Barbarian 6 is a fantastic tactical choice. Action Surge allows you to use your Dragonborn Breath Weapon to clear out minions, and then immediately take the Attack action to carve into the boss, guaranteeing your Divine Fury damage isn't wasted on a 1 HP goblin.
Rogue 2 Dip
If you have the 13 DEX required, a two-level Rogue dip grants Cunning Action. Being able to Dash as a bonus action means you will never be kited by ranged enemies, ensuring your Rage doesn't drop early. Expertise in Athletics also makes you an inescapable grappler.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting Divine Fury's limit: It only triggers on the first hit on your turn. If you score a critical hit on your second attack instead of your first, you can't retroactively apply the bonus damage to the crit.
- Wasting Warrior of the Gods dice: Don't wait until you are at 5 HP to use your damage reduction pool. Spend those 4d12 dice early to mitigate massive burst damage so you stay comfortably out of instant-death ranges.
- Overlapping Flight abilities: At level 14, Rage of the Gods grants you a fly speed. Do not use your species' Draconic Flight feature while Raging; save the racial flight for out-of-combat exploration or encounters where you run out of Rages.
- Misjudging Zealous Focus: It costs your Reaction. If you use Zealous Focus to reroll a trivial Dexterity save against a Fireball, you cannot take Opportunity Attacks that round, letting enemies freely walk past you to attack your Wizard.
