Why Path of the Zealot?

As an Elf stepping into the Path of the Zealot, you become a divine champion who blends supernatural resilience with martial power. While standard Barbarians often struggle against mind-controlling magic that can shut down their rage, your elven Fey Ancestry protects you by granting advantage against charms and outright immunity to magic sleep. This ensures you remain in control of your character and can keep swinging your weapon when it matters most.

When you rage, you don't just hit hard—you channel divine wrath. Your Divine Fury feature lets you infuse your very first weapon strike each turn with extra radiant or necrotic damage, cementing your role as a high-damage Striker. This divine power makes you incredibly lethal, while your high Strength (STR 15) ensures your heavy greataxe or greatsword swings connect reliably.

Furthermore, your elven traits like Trance mean you only need four hours of rest to fully recharge. This allows you to stay on guard for your party while they sleep, ensuring your holy warrior is never caught off guard. You are a tireless, divine beacon of destruction on the battlefield.

Path of the Zealot Features

Divine Fury

Level 3

You can channel divine power into your strikes. On each of your turns while your Rage is active, the first time you hit a target with a weapon attack, you deal extra damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Warrior of the Gods

Level 3

Divine essence helps you sustain yourself in battle. You have a pool of 4d12 Hit Points to draw on. When you take damage, you can spend dice from this pool to reduce the damage taken. You can spend as many dice as you wish (up to the number you have remaining). You regain all spent dice when you finish a Long Rest.

Zealous Focus

Level 6

If you fail a saving throw while your Rage is active, you can reroll it by using your Reaction, and you must use the new roll. You can use this feature once per turn.

Zealous Presence

Level 10

As a Bonus Action, you let out a battle cry infused with divine energy. Up to ten other creatures of your choice within 60 feet of you that can hear you gain Advantage on attack rolls and saving throws until the start of your next turn.

Rage of the Gods

Level 14

When you activate your Rage, you can assume the form of a divine warrior. This form lasts for the duration of your Rage and grants you the following benefits: You gain a Flying Speed equal to your Walking Speed. You have Advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.

2

Prioritize hitting at least once per turn to trigger Divine Fury's bonus damage, maximizing your Striker potential on your very first successful strike.

3

Take the night watch during Trance; if enemies ambush, your Warrior of the Gods feature means dying to protect your sleeping party carries zero permanent consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Path of the Zealot a good subclass for Elf Barbarian?
Yes, it is an excellent choice. Zealot Barbarians are famous for being almost impossible to permanently kill, but their main weakness is mental crowd-control that ends their rage. Elf traits like Fey Ancestry directly patch this weakness by protecting you against charm spells. This makes you a much more reliable, unstoppable frontline Striker.
What makes Path of the Zealot different from other Barbarian subclasses?
The Path of the Zealot specializes in divine damage and cheap resurrection. Unlike other Barbarians who focus purely on physical defense, Zealots get Divine Fury to deal bonus radiant or necrotic damage, and Warrior of the Gods, which allows clerics to revive you without using expensive diamond material components. You are the ultimate low-maintenance, high-damage holy berserker.
