Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start by utilizing your Elf weapon proficiencies combined with Tasha's Dedicated Weapon optional feature. If you have access to a longsword from your specific Elf sub-lineage, make it your Monk weapon to swing for 1d10 damage, completely outpacing your early Martial Arts die. At level 2, manage your small pool of Ki strictly for Flurry of Blows only when you have advantage. At level 3, the Way of the Open Hand or Way of Shadow are your best bets; Shadow pairs perfectly with your Darkvision. At level 4, take the Elven Accuracy feat. This bumps your 15 Dexterity to a 16, immediately boosting your AC, attack rolls, and damage, while giving you "super advantage" whenever you attack with Dexterity.
Levels 5-10
Level 5 is your massive power spike. You gain Extra Attack and the defining Monk feature: Stunning Strike. Your goal is to stun a target, which grants advantage on all subsequent melee attacks against them. Once they are stunned, Elven Accuracy kicks in, allowing you to roll 3d20 on your Flurry of Blows strikes. At level 7, Evasion comes online. Levels 11-16

Mobile
Monks need to hit and run, but using Step of the Wind costs valuable Ki that should be spent on Stunning Strike. Crusher

Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)

Since Monk DCs notoriously lag behind casters, this item is mandatory to keep your Stunning Strike relevant against Tier 3 monsters with massive Constitution modifiers. A Cloak of Displacement is a great secondary item to force disadvantage on attacks against you.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
At this tier, you are hunting for legendary artifacts. The Gloves of Soul Catching from Candlekeep Mysteries are best-in-slot for any Monk, setting your Constitution to 20 and adding 2d10 force damage to every unarmed strike while healing you. If you can't get those, upgrade to a Blood Fury Tattoo for massive necrotic damage bursts and critical hit life-stealing, which triggers frequently thanks to Elven Accuracy.
Party Composition
As a Striker with a relatively low 7.8 early DPR, the Elf Monk cannot solo the frontline. You are a skirmisher and a lockdown specialist. You need a dedicated meat shield—like a Bear Totem Barbarian or a Crown Paladin—to absorb the heavy hits while you flank the enemy backline to stun their spellcasters. Your d8 Hit Die and 13 Constitution will not survive prolonged multiattacks.
Your absolute best friends are support casters who generate advantage. A Bard casting Faerie Fire, a Druid using Entangle, or a Cleric casting Hold Person immediately turns on your Elven Accuracy feat. Because you attack up to four times a round with Flurry of Blows, rolling 3d20 on every single attack virtually guarantees you will land your hits and fish out criticals to compensate for your smaller damage dice.

Fighter 2 Dip
Taking two levels of Fighter is almost universally better than the Monk's level 19 and 20 features. Common Pitfalls
- Spamming Step of the Wind: Players often waste their limited Ki on dashing or disengaging. Pick up the Mobile feat instead, saving your Ki strictly for Stunning Strike and Flurry of Blows.
- Ignoring Dedicated Weapon: Elves get free proficiencies in longswords or longbows. Failing to use Tasha's Dedicated Weapon feature to turn these into Monk weapons means you are leaving free damage on the table in Tiers 1 and 2.
- Using Stunning Strike on High-CON Enemies: Don't dump all your Ki trying to stun a Dragon or a Giant. Their Constitution saves are too high. Target the squishy enemy spellcasters or archers where your DC actually has a chance to fail them.
