Why Oath of Devotion?

The Elf Oath of Devotion Paladin is the ultimate radiant guardian. As a Defender, your main job is to draw enemy attention and keep your party safe. Your elven heritage grants you Fey Ancestry, which gives you advantage on saving throws against being charmed and outright immunity to magic sleep. This perfectly complements your subclass's focus on mental purity and defense, ensuring you remain in control of your actions on the battlefield.

At level 3, you gain access to Sacred Weapon, a channel divinity option that lets you add your Charisma modifier to your attack rolls. For an Elf Paladin balancing strength and poise, this ensures your strikes land reliably, even when facing heavily armored foes. Combine this with Aura of Devotion at level 7, which prevents you and nearby allies from being charmed, and you become a literal beacon of mental fortitude.

Additionally, traits like Darkvision and Trance make you an exceptional sentinel. While your party sleeps, your shorter rest times allow you to stand watch, keeping your allies safe from nighttime ambushes.

Oath of Devotion Features

Oath of Devotion Spells

Level 3

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed in the Oath of Devotion Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work. Sacred Weapon

Level 3

As a Bonus Action, you can imbue one weapon that you're holding with positive energy. For 10 minutes, you add your Charisma modifier to attack rolls made with that weapon (in addition to your Strength or Dexterity modifier). The weapon emits bright light in a 20-foot Radius and dim light 20 feet beyond that. If the weapon is not magical, it becomes magical for the Duration of the effect.

Aura of Devotion

Level 7

You emanate an aura of dedication while you aren't Incapacitated. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have Advantage on saving throws against being Charmed. If a friendly creature in the aura is Charmed, that condition ends on it.

Smite of Protection

Level 15

When a creature within 30 feet of you that you can see takes damage, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage by half (round down) using your Lay on Hands. If a creature has taken more damage than its hit point maximum from the triggering damage, the creature is Incapacitated until the end of its next turn.

Holy Nimbus

Level 20

As an action, you can imbue your presence with holy power, causing bright light to surge out from you. You emit bright light in a 30-foot Radius and dim light 30 feet beyond that. Creatures of your choice that you can see in that light gain Advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects until the end of your next turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oath of Devotion a good subclass for Elf Paladin?
Yes, it is an excellent choice! The Oath of Devotion focuses heavily on protecting allies and resisting mind-altering magic. When paired with the Elf's Fey Ancestry, you become incredibly resistant to charms and sleep effects. This ensures you can always stay on the front lines, shielding your party and channeling your holy power without being sidelined by enemy spellcasters.
What makes Oath of Devotion different from other Paladin subclasses?
The Oath of Devotion is the classic "white knight" archetype, specializing in pure defense, accuracy, and anti-charm utility. Unlike offense-focused oaths, Devotion excels at supporting allies through features like Aura of Devotion, which shields friends from mind control, and Sacred Weapon, which infuses your blade with radiant light to bypass tough enemy defenses.
