Why Path of the Zealot?

The Path of the Zealot transforms your Barbarian into a holy warrior fueled by divine anger, serving as an aggressive Striker who excels at dealing high damage. Typically, Barbarians struggle against mental magic, but playing a Gnome solves this weakness. Thanks to your Gnomish Cunning species trait, you gain advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against spells. This perfectly covers your lower mental stats, like your Wisdom of 12 and Intelligence of 10, making you incredibly difficult for enemy spellcasters to shut down.

At level 3, you gain Divine Fury, allowing you to channel holy power into your first weapon strike each turn for extra radiant or necrotic damage. When combined with your high Strength of 15, you will reliably carve through enemies on the front lines. Because you are always in the thick of battle, you will take hits, but the subclass's Warrior of the Gods feature means allies can resurrect you without needing expensive material components. This makes you a fearless vanguard who can dive into danger without worrying about the cost of defeat.

Path of the Zealot Features

Divine Fury

Level 3

You can channel divine power into your strikes. On each of your turns while your Rage is active, the first time you hit a target with a weapon attack, you deal extra damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Warrior of the Gods

Level 3

Divine essence helps you sustain yourself in battle. You have a pool of 4d12 Hit Points to draw on. When you take damage, you can spend dice from this pool to reduce the damage taken. You can spend as many dice as you wish (up to the number you have remaining). You regain all spent dice when you finish a Long Rest.

Zealous Focus

Level 6

If you fail a saving throw while your Rage is active, you can reroll it by using your Reaction, and you must use the new roll. You can use this feature once per turn.

Zealous Presence

Level 10

As a Bonus Action, you let out a battle cry infused with divine energy. Up to ten other creatures of your choice within 60 feet of you that can hear you gain Advantage on attack rolls and saving throws until the start of your next turn.

Rage of the Gods

Level 14

When you activate your Rage, you can assume the form of a divine warrior. This form lasts for the duration of your Rage and grants you the following benefits: You gain a Flying Speed equal to your Walking Speed. You have Advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Path of the Zealot a good subclass for Gnome Barbarian?
Yes! While Gnomes aren't traditional Barbarians, the Path of the Zealot is a fantastic fit. Barbarians are normally vulnerable to mental saving throws, but Gnomish Cunning protects you from magic while you focus on dealing damage. Combined with features like Divine Fury and Warrior of the Gods, you become an exceptionally durable, high-damage Striker that is incredibly difficult for enemies to disable or keep dead.
What makes Path of the Zealot different from other Barbarian subclasses?
The Path of the Zealot specializes in relentless offense and cheap resurrection. Unlike defensive subclasses, it focuses on raw damage through Divine Fury and group support via Zealous Presence. Most importantly, it makes death a temporary setback; Warrior of the Gods lets healers revive you for free, allowing you to fight with absolute, reckless abandon without risking your party's gold.
