Why Gloom Stalker?

The Goliath Gloom Stalker is a terrifyingly effective "Striker"—a party role focused on dealing massive burst damage. While most rangers are stealthy, your Goliath brings an unexpected layer of physical might to the shadows. By focusing your highest stats in Dexterity (15) and Wisdom (14), you will easily slip past enemy lines and unleash devastating, precise strikes before your foes even realize you are there.

This build thrives on the Gloom Stalker’s signature Dread Ambusher feature, which grants you a massive speed boost and an extra high-damage attack during the very first round of combat. When you emerge from the dark, your Goliath Giant Ancestry can trigger to reduce incoming damage if enemies retaliate, or add extra punch to your initial ambush, keeping you safe while you eliminate high-threat targets.

Furthermore, features like Umbral Sight make you completely invisible to creatures relying on darkvision in deep darkness. Combined with your Goliath traits like Powerful Build, you can drag defeated foes into the shadows or hold choke points with ease, making you a master of battlefield control and stealth.

Gloom Stalker Features

Dread Ambusher

Level 3

You excel at striking before your enemies can react. You have Advantage on attack rolls against creatures that haven't taken a turn yet in the combat. In addition, if you're hidden when you make an attack roll, you deal an extra 1d8 damage with that attack.

Gloom Stalker Spells

Level 3

You gain oath spells at the ranger levels listed in the Gloom Stalker Spells table. [Gloom Stalker Spells: 3rd - Disguise Self, Invisibility; 5th - Darkness, Pass without Trace; 9th - Fear, Nondetection; 13th - Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility; 17th - Animate Objects, Mislead]

Umbral Sight

Level 3

You gain Darkvision within a range of 300 feet. If you already have Darkvision from another source, it increases by 300 feet. You can see in Dim Light within this radius as if it were Bright Light, and in Darkness as if it were Dim Light. You can't discern color in Darkness, only Shades of Gray.

Iron Mind

Level 7

You gain proficiency in Wisdom saves. If you're already proficient in Wisdom saves, you gain proficiency in Intelligence saves instead.

Stalker's Flurry

Level 11

You can use your Bonus Action to make two weapon attacks as part of the Attack action on your turn, rather than one. This increases to three attacks when you reach 11th level.

Shadowy Dodge

Level 15

Starting at 15th level, when a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack while you're in Dim Light or Darkness, you can use your Reaction to impose Disadvantage on the attack roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gloom Stalker a good subclass for Goliath Ranger?
Yes, it is an excellent choice. The Gloom Stalker turns the traditionally loud and heavy Goliath into an unseen assassin. Combining the subclass's explosive first-turn damage from Dread Ambusher with Goliath traits like Giant Ancestry allows you to hit incredibly hard while possessing the natural durability to survive if your stealth is ever broken.
What makes Gloom Stalker different from other Ranger subclasses?
The Gloom Stalker specializes in ambush tactics, stealth, and darkvision mastery. Unlike other Rangers who focus on animal companions or general utility, the Gloom Stalker is designed to end fights in the first round. It grants you invisibility in darkness against darkvision-reliant foes and provides a massive burst of speed and extra attacks when combat begins.
