Why Thief?

As a Goliath Thief, you defy the stereotype of the fragile, shadowy burglar. While your high Dexterity (15) ensures you are exceptionally stealthy and deadly with finesse weapons, your giant heritage gives you a physical edge that standard rogues can only dream of. The Goliath's Powerful Build trait means you can lift and carry immense weight, which synergizes perfectly with your rogue agility, allowing you to easily haul away heavy loot or drag obstacles out of your path.

When you reach level 3, the Thief subclass opens up incredible mobility options. The Second-Story Work feature improves your climbing speed and jumping distance. Combined with your natural Goliath athleticism, you can scale walls effortlessly and leap across rooftops like a parkour master, even while carrying heavy gear. This allows you to position yourself perfectly as a Striker, raining down attacks and escaping before enemies can react.

In combat, you can utilize your Giant Ancestry to shrug off damage or control the field, while using your bonus action for Fast Hands to disarm traps, throw items, or pocket keys in the blink of an eye. This build proves that you do not need to be small to be sneaky.

Thief Features

Fast Hands

Level 3

You can use the bonus action granted by your Cunning Action to make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check, use your thieves' tools to disarm a trap or open a lock, or take the Use an Object action.

Second-Story Work

Level 3

You gain the ability to climb faster than normal; climbing no longer costs you extra movement. In addition, when you make a running jump, the distance you cover increases by a number of feet equal to your Dexterity modifier.

Supreme Sneak

Level 9

You have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks if you move no more than half your speed on the same turn.

Use Magic Device

Level 13

You have learned enough about how magic works that you can improvise the use of magic items. You ignore all class, race, and level requirements on the use of magic items.

Thief's Reflexes

Level 17

You have become adept at laying ambushes and quickly escaping danger. You can take two turns during the first round of any combat. You take your first turn at your normal initiative and your second turn at your initiative minus 10. You can't use this feature when you are surprised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thief a good subclass for Goliath Rogue?
Yes! The Goliath's physical traits like Powerful Build beautifully complement the Thief's athletic features like Second-Story Work. While Rogues usually rely purely on stealth, a Goliath Thief adds incredible verticality, carrying capacity, and durability to the build. This makes you an elite, highly mobile Striker who can scale any obstacle, steal heavy treasures, and survive tough skirmishes.
What makes Thief different from other Rogue subclasses?
Unlike Arcane Tricksters who cast spells or Assassins who focus on first-strike burst damage, the Thief specializes in environmental interaction, superior mobility, and item versatility. With features like Fast Hands, you can use objects as a bonus action, while Use Magic Device eventually lets you bypass class restrictions on magical gear. It is the ultimate utility subclass.
