Why Assassin?

Playing a Goliath Assassin Rogue blends the unexpected physical might of giant-kin with the lethal, silent strikes of D&D's ultimate stalker. While Rogues are typically seen as small and nimble, your high Dexterity (15) ensures you are incredibly swift, while your Goliath heritage provides unique survivability. Your Giant Ancestry trait grants supernatural resilience, helping you shrug off damage when a stealthy approach goes sideways and you find yourself in the thick of melee combat.

As an Assassin, your primary goal is to strike first and strike hard. The level 3 Assassinate feature rewards you for catching enemies off guard, granting you devastating advantages and automatic critical hits against surprised targets. This pairs beautifully with your high Dexterity to ensure you act first in initiative. Additionally, your Goliath Powerful Build and Large Form traits mean that even though you focus on stealth, you can effortlessly carry heavy gear, drag fallen foes into the shadows, or physically dominate the battlefield when cover is blown.

As you level up, you will gain utility features like Infiltration Expertise to adopt false identities, and eventually Death Strike to instantly dispatch targets. This build is a perfect striker: a hulking shadow who slips past guards undetected and delivers one-shot kills before slipping back into the dark.

Assassin Features

Assassinate

Level 3

You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn't taken a turn in combat yet. In addition, any hit you score against a surprised creature is a critical hit.

Assassin's Tools

Level 3

You gain proficiency with the disguise kit and the poisoner's kit.

Infiltration Expertise

Level 9

You can unfailingly create false identities for yourself. You must spend seven days and 25 gp to establish the history, profession, and affiliations for an identity. You can't establish an identity that belongs to someone else. Thereafter, if you adopt the new identity as a disguise, other creatures believe you to be that person until given an obvious reason not to.

Envenom Weapons

Level 13

You can apply a special poison to your weapons as a bonus action. The next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack within the next minute, the target takes additional poison damage equal to your Sneak Attack damage and must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus) or be poisoned for 1 minute.

Death Strike

Level 17

When you hit a surprised creature, it must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the damage of the attack is doubled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Assassin a good subclass for Goliath Rogue?
Yes! It offers an incredibly fun, unconventional playstyle. Goliath's physical traits like Powerful Build allow you to easily hide or dispose of bodies, while Giant Ancestry provides defensive cushions that standard Rogues lack. Combined with the Assassin’s explosive Assassinate feature, you become a durable, terrifying striker who can initiate combat with massive damage and survive the immediate retaliation.
What makes Assassin different from other Rogue subclasses?
The Assassin specializes in ambush tactics and dealing massive single-target damage right at the start of combat. Unlike other Rogues who focus on evasion or magic, the Assassin excels at disguise, poison crafting via Assassin's Tools, and landing guaranteed critical hits using the Assassinate feature. It is the ultimate "one-shot, one-kill" archetype designed to end fights before they even begin.
