Read full guide →Why Tiefling Druid?
Let's be brutally honest: a Tiefling Druid is an uphill battle, earning a meager 4/10 synergy rating. The standard Tiefling chassis dumps your racial spellcasting stat (Charisma) to a pathetic 10, meaning your innate Hellish Rebuke and Darkness will fail constantly against enemy saves. Furthermore, lacking a native Wisdom boost in legacy rules leaves you stuck at a 15 Wisdom at level 1, significantly delaying your spell save DC progression.
So why play it? Because Fiendish Legacy's fire resistance is a godsend for a mid-line controller, and tying this species to the Circle of Wildfire subclass creates a thematic and mechanical powerhouse. You lean entirely into fire damage and battlefield positioning. By utilizing the Wildfire Spirit's Fiery Teleportation, you can reposition allies out of danger while staying perfectly safe yourself.
To make this work, you must aggressively patch your stats. You are starting with 8 STR, 12 DEX, 14 CON, 13 INT, 15 WIS, and 10 CHA. This requires immediate intervention at level 4 to round out that odd Wisdom score. But once you get past the awkward Tier 1 phase, you become a highly mobile, fire-resistant controller who can lock down the battlefield with Spike Growth and teleport your party out of bad situations.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start by surviving. At level 1, your 12 Dexterity and medium armor restrictions mean your AC is hovering around a dangerous 15 (Hide armor + Wooden Shield). Rely on Entangle to keep melee enemies away. At level 2, select the Circle of Wildfire. Your Wildfire Spirit becomes your primary bonus action; use its Fiery Teleportation to deal 1d6+PB fire damage and move allies 15 feet out of grapples or bad positioning. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat. Choose Wisdom to bump your 15 WIS to a 16 (+3 modifier), and grab Misty Step and Silvery Barbs. This fixes your awkward starting stats and gives you an emergency escape when your Wildfire Spirit is dead.
Levels 5-10
Tier 2 is where the Wildfire Tiefling comes online. At level 5, you get 3rd-level spells. Revivify is automatically prepared for you, saving a prep slot. At level 6, Enhanced Bond adds a 1d8 to your fire damage or healing spells while your spirit is active; suddenly, your Produce Flame cantrip hits much harder. At level 8, take your Ability Score Improvement to bump Wisdom to 18 (+4). At level 10, Cauterizing Flames lets you turn dying creatures into spectral flames that heal or harm for 2d10+WIS. Position yourself to trigger these reactions constantly.
Levels 11-16
At level 11, your spell DPR jumps to 10.18 as cantrips scale, but you're primarily dropping 6th-level control spells like Bones of the Earth. At level 12, take the War Caster feat. You need advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration on massive area-denial spells like Wall of Fire. At level 14, Blazing Revival turns your Wildfire Spirit into an extra life—if you drop to 0 HP, the spirit dies instead and heals you for half your hit points. This, combined with Fiendish Legacy, makes you incredibly difficult to kill. At level 16, max your Wisdom to 20 (+5).
Levels 17-20
Welcome to Tier 4. At level 17, you unlock 9th-level spells. Foresight is your best friend here, granting advantage on almost everything for 8 hours. Your spell DPR is nominally 13.2, but your true value is locking down entire encounters with Fire Storm and Shapechange. At level 20, Archdruid gives you unlimited Wild Shape, meaning you can summon your Wildfire Spirit an infinite number of times, effectively giving you infinite uses of Blazing Revival. You are now immortal as long as you have a bonus action.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Take Produce Flame and Guidance. Produce Flame serves as your primary ranged attack and scales beautifully at level 6 with Enhanced Bond, adding an extra 1d8 to the damage roll. Guidance is mandatory for any Druid to spam outside of combat.
Level 1-2 Spells
Entangle is your bread-and-butter Tier 1 control spell. Absorb Elements is vital; you already have fire resistance from Fiendish Legacy, so use this to gain resistance to cold, lightning, or acid damage on the fly. Spike Growth is your ultimate level 2 spell—combo this with your Wildfire Spirit's teleportation to drag or drop enemies into the cheese grater.
Level 3-5 Spells
Plant Growth is unparalleled, non-concentration control. Drop it to quarter enemy movement, then use your bonus action to teleport your party safely out of the overgrowth. Wall of Fire is automatically prepared for Wildfire Druids and benefits from Enhanced Bond. Transmute Rock is a devastating 5th-level non-concentration spell that restrains enemies in mud.
High-Level Spells
Heal is the best burst healing in the game, and Enhanced Bond tacks on an extra 1d8 for good measure. Fire Storm lets you carve around your allies while torching enemies, fitting perfectly with your Tiefling aesthetics. Foresight is your 9th-level pick, giving you an 8-hour, non-concentration buff that makes you practically untouchable.
Recommended Feats
Fey Touched
Take this exactly at level 4. With a starting Wisdom of 15, you desperately need a half-feat to reach 16 (+3). Fey Touched provides that +1 WIS, plus a free casting of Misty Step. While your Wildfire Spirit can teleport you, it's not always summoned or alive. Adding Silvery Barbs as your 1st-level divination/enchantment pick gives you an incredible reaction to force enemies to reroll successful saves against your Entangle.
War Caster
Take this at level 12. You have a mediocre 14 Constitution, meaning your concentration checks are vulnerable. As a Controller, dropping concentration on Wall of Fire or Spike Growth ruins your entire turn. War Caster gives you advantage on those checks and lets you cast spells for opportunity attacks.
Elemental Adept (Fire)
Consider this at level 16 instead of maxing Wisdom if your DM throws a lot of fiends or red dragons at you. Wildfire Druids rely heavily on fire damage, and ignoring fire resistance keeps your Produce Flame and Wall of Fire relevant in the late game. Note: It does not bypass fire immunity, which is a major limitation.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Acquire Hide Armor and a Wooden Shield immediately to reach 15 AC. Your goal here is to find a Moon Sickle, +1. This uncommon item from Tasha's adds +1 to your spell attack rolls and save DCs, which is critical for making your 16 Wisdom feel like an 18.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a Sentinel Shield. Advantage on Initiative rolls is crucial for a Controller; you want to drop Plant Growth before the enemies can spread out. If your DM allows non-metal medium armor, hunt for Dragon Scale Mail to boost your AC without violating Druid taboos.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
Upgrade to a Moon Sickle, +2. More importantly, quest for a Staff of the Woodlands. This rare staff gives you a +2 to spell attacks and allows you to cast Pass without Trace at will, turning your entire party into stealth operatives without burning your precious 2nd-level slots.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
You want a Tome of Understanding to push your Wisdom past the cap of 20 to 22, raising your spell save DC to astronomical levels. Pair this with a Moon Sickle, +3 to ensure your Fire Storm and Foresight-fueled attacks never miss.
Party Composition
As a Tiefling Wildfire Druid, your role is pure Controller. You shape the battlefield with lingering AoE effects like Spike Growth and Wall of Fire, while your Wildfire Spirit teleports allies out of danger. You are not a frontliner, and with 12 Dexterity and 14 Constitution, you will fold if focused.
You shine brightest when paired with forced-movement specialists. A Battle Master Fighter with Pushing Attack or a Warlock with Repelling Blast and Grasp of Hadar can shove enemies back into your Wall of Fire repeatedly, triggering the damage multiple times per round.
You also pair excellently with a Twilight Cleric. Their Twilight Sanctuary provides a massive buffer of temporary hit points that apply to both you and your fragile Wildfire Spirit, keeping your primary teleportation engine alive through brutal Tier 3 and Tier 4 encounters.
Multiclass Options
Peace Domain Cleric 1
A single-level dip into Peace Cleric is mathematically staggering. Emboldening Bond gives a 1d4 bonus to attacks, saves, and checks that scales with your Proficiency Bonus, not your Cleric level. You can apply this to your Wildfire Spirit, making its Flame Seed attacks incredibly accurate.
Fighter 2
Taking two levels of Fighter grants you Action Surge. For a Controller Druid, Action Surge is game-breaking. It allows you to cast two leveled spells in a single turn. You can drop Plant Growth to reduce enemy movement to a crawl, then Action Surge and cast Wall of Fire in a ring around them. They will literally burn to death before they can walk out.
Common Pitfalls
- Relying on Hellish Rebuke: Your Tiefling racial spells use Charisma. With a 10 CHA, your save DC for Hellish Rebuke at level 3 is a pathetic 10. Do not waste your reaction casting this unless the enemy is already near death.
- Casting Darkness: Standard Tieflings lack Devil's Sight. Casting your racial Darkness spell blinds you just as much as the enemy, preventing you from casting spells that require you to see your target (like summoning your Wildfire Spirit in a specific spot).
- Forgetting Fiery Teleportation's AoE: When your Wildfire Spirit teleports, it leaves behind a burst of fire. Players often forget this damage triggers on the space the spirit left, not where it arrives. Position it adjacent to enemies before popping it to safety.
- Hoarding Wild Shape uses: You do not turn into animals; you summon your Wildfire Spirit. It only lasts one hour. With two uses per short rest, you should have your Spirit active in almost every combat. Don't save it for a 'boss fight'.
