Why Assassin?

Choosing a Tiefling for your Assassin Rogue creates a lethal predator who excels in the dark. Your high Dexterity (DEX) of 15 powers your stealth rolls and weapon attacks, while your Darkvision species trait allows you to stalk targets in pitch-black corridors without a revealing torch. This sets you up perfectly to use your level 3 Assassinate feature, which grants you a massive advantage and guaranteed critical hits against foes who haven't reacted yet in combat.

While Rogues are typically "strikers" who prefer to hit and run, sometimes stealth fails. That is where your Fiendish Legacy shines, granting you innate resistance to fire damage. This extra layer of defense ensures that if you are spotted before executing a perfect strike, you can survive a retaliatory blast and escape. As you grow in power, you will learn to mimic others and brew deadly poisons, blending Tiefling cunning with lethal precision.

Assassin Features

Assassinate

Level 3

You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn't taken a turn in combat yet. In addition, any hit you score against a surprised creature is a critical hit.

Assassin's Tools

Level 3

You gain proficiency with the disguise kit and the poisoner's kit.

Infiltration Expertise

Level 9

You can unfailingly create false identities for yourself. You must spend seven days and 25 gp to establish the history, profession, and affiliations for an identity. You can't establish an identity that belongs to someone else. Thereafter, if you adopt the new identity as a disguise, other creatures believe you to be that person until given an obvious reason not to.

Envenom Weapons

Level 13

You can apply a special poison to your weapons as a bonus action. The next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack within the next minute, the target takes additional poison damage equal to your Sneak Attack damage and must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus) or be poisoned for 1 minute.

Death Strike

Level 17

When you hit a surprised creature, it must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the damage of the attack is doubled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Assassin a good subclass for Tiefling Rogue?
Yes, it is an excellent choice. Tieflings bring valuable survival tools to the Assassin's high-risk, high-reward playstyle. Since the Assassin relies on striking from the shadows to trigger features like Assassinate, having built-in Darkvision is incredibly useful. Additionally, their innate fire resistance from Fiendish Legacy protects them if their stealthy infiltration goes awry and things heat up.
What makes Assassin different from other Rogue subclasses?
The Assassin specializes in overwhelming first-strike damage and deep-cover deception, rather than general utility or magic. While other Rogues might focus on dodging or stealing, the Assassin is built to end fights before they even begin. With features like Assassinate and Death Strike, you excel at scouting ahead, catching enemies surprised, and dealing massive, combat-ending damage in a single, decisive turn.
