Let us be brutally honest: a Goliath Sorcerer earns its 3/10 Synergy Rating. You are pairing a martial-focused species designed for grappling and heavy lifting with a d6-Hit-Die caster that desperately wants to stay 60 feet away from the frontline. Powerful Build does absolutely nothing for a character with 10 Strength, and activating Large Form actively works against you by expanding your unarmored body into a 10-by-10 target for enemy archers.
However, this combination has two highly specific redeeming qualities. First, Giant Ancestry provides Stone's Endurance, allowing you to reduce incoming damage by 1d12 + your Constitution modifier as a reaction. At early levels, this is arguably better than the Shield spell against a single massive hit, saving your precious spell slots for offense. Second, if you play a Divine Soul or Clockwork Soul Sorcerer and use Large Form, any aura spells that radiate from you—like Spirit Guardians or Word of Radiance—now originate from an expanded 10-by-10 space, drastically increasing the spell's actual grid coverage. It is an incredibly niche build, but if you want to be a massive, spell-slinging artillery piece, you can make it work by focusing on area-denial and reaction management.

Build Path (Levels 1-20)
Levels 1-4
Start with your optimal array: STR 10, DEX 13, CON 14, INT 8, WIS 12, CHA 15. You are painfully squishy, and your reaction is highly contested. You must choose between casting Shield to avoid a hit or using Stone's Endurance to soak it. Save Stone's Endurance for critical hits or when you are completely out of first-level spell slots. At level 4, take the Fey Touched feat to bump your Charisma to 16 and grab Misty Step. You lack Darkvision, so tactical positioning is critical when you are forced to hold a torch or cast the Light cantrip.
Levels 5-10
At level 5, you gain access to Large Form and third-level spell slots. Do not activate Large Form just to look intimidating; use it strategically right before casting Thunder Step to increase the perimeter of your blast radius, catching more enemies in the 10-foot burst. At level 8, take your Ability Score Improvement to bump Charisma to 18. This boosts your Spell Save DC for Fireball. In combat, use Quickened Spell on a blast, then use your action to Dodge, relying on your 14 Constitution and Stone's Endurance to survive whatever gets through.
Levels 11-16
At level 12, max your Charisma to 20. Stone's Endurance falls off hard in Tier 3—reducing a Fire Giant's hit by 1d12+2 will not save your 68 HP pool. You must rely entirely on Absorb Elements and Counterspell to survive. Pick up the Resilient (Wisdom) feat at level 16; your 12 Wisdom leaves you highly vulnerable to mind-control effects, and a Dominated Large Goliath casting Chain Lightning on the party is a guaranteed TPK.
Levels 17-20
At this tier, Large Form becomes a severe liability against Ancient Dragon breath weapons, so stay Medium unless you need to physically block a 10-foot dungeon corridor. Take the Tough feat at level 19 to push your HP past 104. Your primary combat loop involves casting Meteor Swarm from maximum distance, or using Wish to cast Foresight on yourself to permanently offset your mediocre 13 Dexterity AC.
Recommended Spells
Cantrips
Take Light immediately; you have no Darkvision, and carrying a torch occupies a hand you need for a Bloodwell Vial. Fire Bolt is your reliable ranged option, keeping you away from melee where your d6 Hit Die melts. Grab Word of Radiance if you are a Divine Soul—being Large adds extra squares to the 5-foot adjacency radius.
Level 1-2 Spells
Shield and Absorb Elements are non-negotiable. While Stone's Endurance reduces damage, Shield prevents it entirely. Take Rime's Binding Ice at level 3; it creates a 30-foot cone, and firing a cone from a 10-by-10 Large Form gives you incredible control over the battlefield geometry.
Level 3-5 Spells
Fireball is your bread and butter as a Blaster. Take Thunder Step for escapes; unlike Misty Step, it deals damage, and the 10-foot damage perimeter originates from your expanded Large Form space. At 5th level, grab Synaptic Static to debuff enemies, which artificially increases your survivability by lowering their attack rolls.
High-Level Spells
Chain Lightning is your premier 6th-level blast. At 7th level, take Crown of Stars; it gives you a consistent bonus action attack that does not require concentration. For 9th level, Meteor Swarm fits the Blaster role perfectly, while Wish provides unparalleled versatility.
Recommended Feats
Fey Touched
Take this at level 4. Bumping your 15 Charisma to a 16 is mandatory, and getting Misty Step frees up a Sorcerer spell learned. Choose Gift of Alacrity for the 1st-level spell to fix your low Initiative bonus stemming from your 13 Dexterity.
Resilient (Wisdom)
Take this at level 16. Your 12 Wisdom is a glaring weak point at high levels. Proficiency in Wisdom saving throws prevents you from being paralyzed or charmed, which is vital because Stone's Endurance cannot reduce psychic damage or break a Hold Person spell.
Tough
Take this at level 19. A Goliath Sorcerer at level 17 only has 104 HP with a 14 Constitution. Tough adds 40 HP immediately, giving you the necessary buffer to survive high-tier spellcasting enemies without instantly dropping to zero.
Gear Progression
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
Acquire a Bloodwell Vial +1 as soon as possible to boost your Spell Save DC and recover 5 Sorcery Points on a short rest. Keep a mundane Lantern or Torches on your belt due to your lack of Darkvision.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
Seek out a Cloak of Displacement. Your AC is atrocious (likely 11 or 14 with Mage Armor), so imposing disadvantage on attack rolls is far more mathematically impactful than a +1 to your AC. Combine this with Stone's Endurance to shrug off the few attacks that slip through.
Tier 3 (Levels 11-16)
A Staff of Power is best-in-slot. It grants a +2 bonus to AC and saving throws, patching up your 13 Dexterity weakness, and provides excellent blasting spells like Cone of Cold and Wall of Force to save your natural spell slots.
Tier 4 (Levels 17-20)
The Robe of the Archmagi is your ultimate goal. It sets your base AC to 15 (16 with your DEX), boosts your Spell Save DC by +2, and gives advantage on saving throws against spells. This is the only way to make a d6-hit-die Goliath survive the frontline.
Party Composition
As a Blaster with a massive physical footprint but fragile HP, you need a frontline that can physically shield you and a support caster that can mitigate your weaknesses. A Devotion or Ancients Paladin is your best friend; Aura of Protection boosts your terrible Dexterity and Intelligence saving throws, while their physical presence keeps enemies away from your 10-by-10 Large Form.
You also pair perfectly with a Twilight Domain Cleric. Their Twilight Sanctuary provides constant temporary hit points, which stack beautifully with your Stone's Endurance reaction to make you incredibly resilient. Furthermore, the Cleric provides 300 feet of shared Darkvision, completely eliminating one of the Goliath's biggest racial drawbacks.
Multiclass Options
Fighter 2 Dip
Taking two levels of Fighter gives you Action Surge, allowing you to cast two leveled spells in a single turn (e.g., double Fireball). It also grants Medium Armor and Shield proficiency, immediately fixing your terrible AC without needing to invest in Dexterity beyond 13.
Hexblade Warlock 2 Dip
The classic Sorlock build works wonders here. Two levels of Hexblade give you Medium Armor, Shields, and the Eldritch Blast cantrip with Agonizing Blast. It turns your Goliath from a squishy liability into a heavily armored turret that pushes enemies 20 feet backward on every turn.
Common Pitfalls
- Using Large Form in tight dungeons: Expanding to a 10-by-10 size in a 5-foot hallway means you are squeezing, which grants you disadvantage on attack rolls and gives enemies advantage against you. Stay Medium indoors.
- Overlapping Reactions: Stone's Endurance and the Shield spell both require your reaction. If you use Stone's Endurance to reduce a goblin's arrow by 1d12+2, you cannot cast Shield when the boss swings a greatsword at you later in the round.
- Forgetting Light Sources: Goliaths do not have Darkvision. If you forget to cast Light, you will have disadvantage on all ranged spell attacks, completely ruining your 7.8 DPR at level 5.
- Wasting Powerful Build: Do not try to be a pack mule just because you have Powerful Build. With 10 Strength, your carrying capacity is double that of a normal caster, but loading yourself down with heavy gear prevents you from utilizing Misty Step effectively if optional encumbrance rules are used.
