Why Evoker?

Choosing a Human for your Evoker Wizard means prioritizing adaptability. As an Evoker, your primary job is to act as a "Blaster"—a spellcaster who deals massive area-of-effect damage to groups of enemies. Thanks to the Human's Versatile trait, you start your adventure with a free Origin feat. Taking a feat like War Caster early on helps you protect your concentration, ensuring your explosive spells go off without a hitch.

Furthermore, your Human traits like Resourceful give you a daily dose of Heroic Inspiration. This is a lifesaver when you need to reroll a critical saving throw. When you unlock Sculpt Spells at level 6, you can safely drop massive fireballs directly onto your allies, carving out safe pockets for them while turning your enemies to ash.

Your stats are perfectly aligned for this explosive role. With a high Intelligence (INT) of 15, your spell saving throws will be incredibly difficult for enemies to resist. Combined with a solid Constitution (CON) of 14 to keep you standing, you can confidently stand at the back of the battlefield, slinging shaped explosions with absolute safety and precision.

Evoker Features

Evocation Savant

Level 3

The gold and time you spend to copy evocation spells into your spellbook is halved.

Potent Cantrip

Level 3

When a creature succeeds on a saving throw against your cantrip, the creature takes half the cantrip's damage (if any) but suffers no additional effect from the cantrip.

Sculpt Spells

Level 6

When you cast an evocation spell that affects other creatures you can see, you can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell's level. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell and take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.

Empowered Evocation

Level 10

You can add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any wizard evocation spell you cast.

Overchannel

Level 14

When you cast a wizard spell of 1st through 5th level that deals damage, you can deal maximum damage with that spell. The first time you use this feature, you take no ill effects. Each additional time before you finish a long rest, you take 2d12 necrotic damage per spell level immediately after casting. This damage ignores resistance and immunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Evoker a good subclass for Human Wizard?
Absolutely. The Human's Versatile trait allows you to pick up crucial feats early to boost your high Intelligence (INT) or protect your concentration. This pairs perfectly with the Evoker’s ability to reshape explosive spells using Sculpt Spells, letting you play a highly focused blaster mage without worrying about hurting your allies or losing focus on your spells.
What makes Evoker different from other Wizard subclasses?
The Evoker specializes in pure offensive destruction, turning the Wizard from a utility caster into a devastating battlefield blaster. While other schools focus on control or defense, Evokers get features like Sculpt Spells to protect allies from their own massive area-of-effect spells and Empowered Evocation to add their Intelligence modifier directly to damage rolls, maximizing their offensive output.
