Why Wild Magic Sorcery?

Playing an Elf Wild Magic Sorcerer is all about embracing chaos while relying on your innate elven resilience to keep you safe. Your primary goal on the battlefield is to act as a Controller, using your high Charisma (CHA 15) to land spells that disable enemies. However, unlike traditional, orderly spellcasters, your magic is volatile. With the Wild Magic Surge feature, casting spells can trigger unpredictable, magical side effects that shake up the battlefield.

This is where your Elven heritage shines. Your Fey Ancestry trait grants you advantage on saving throws against being charmed and immunizes you to magical sleep. This is crucial because when your wild magic triggers an accidental self-inflicted effect, your natural defenses help you resist the worst of your own chaos. Additionally, having a solid Constitution (CON 14) ensures you can maintain concentration on your control spells when things go sideways.

To tilt the odds in your favor, you can use Tides of Chaos to gain instant advantage on a roll. Combined with the Elf's Keen Senses for high passive Perception, you become an incredibly aware, adaptable controller who can manipulate luck itself to keep the party safe.

Wild Magic Sorcery Features

Wild Magic Surge

Level 3

Once per turn, after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, the DM can have you roll a d20. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a random magical effect.

Tides of Chaos

Level 3

You can gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. Once you do so, you can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest. Any time before you regain the use of this feature, the DM can have you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. You then regain the use of this feature.

Bend Luck

Level 6

When another creature you can see makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can use your reaction and spend 2 sorcery points to roll 1d4 and apply the number rolled as a bonus or penalty (your choice) to the creature's roll. You can do so after the creature rolls but before any effects occur.

Controlled Chaos

Level 14

Whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, you can roll twice and use either result.

Tamed Surge

Level 18

You gain a measure of control over the surges of your wild magic. Whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, you can roll twice and choose which result to use. If you roll the same number on both dice, you can instead choose any effect on the table.

Pro Tips

1

Use Tides of Chaos early in combat to guarantee a hit, then cast a leveled spell to trigger a potential surge and reset the ability.

2

Position yourself carefully using your Elven mobility; your Wild Magic Surges can affect nearby creatures, so keep enemies close and allies safe.

3

Rely on your Fey Ancestry to resist mind-control spells, allowing you to focus your spell slots on controlling the enemy rather than defending yourself.

4

When an ally needs a crucial hit or an enemy must fail a save, spend your Sorcery Points on Bend Luck to shift the numbers.

Is Wild Magic Sorcery a good subclass for Elf Sorcerer?
Yes! The Elf is an excellent fit for a Wild Magic Sorcerer. The Fey Ancestry trait protects you from charm and sleep effects, which is incredibly useful when your own Wild Magic Surges go awry. Furthermore, the Elf's natural Dexterity helps boost your Armor Class, keeping you safe while you manipulate the battlefield and bend luck to your whim.
What makes Wild Magic Sorcery different from other Sorcerer subclasses?
Wild Magic Sorcery specializes in unpredictability and fate manipulation. While other sorcerers focus on steady elemental damage or holy magic, you specialize in bending probability.
