Why Wild Magic Sorcery?

Playing a Gnome Wild Magic Sorcery Sorcerer is all about embracing beautiful chaos while keeping yourself safe from your own volatile magic. As a battlefield Controller, your job is to manipulate enemies, alter fates, and shape the flow of combat. Your primary tool for this is Tides of Chaos, which lets you gain advantage (rolling twice and taking the higher result) on demand. However, manipulating fate increases the likelihood of triggering a Wild Magic Surge, causing a random, unpredictable spell effect to burst from you.

This is where your Gnome heritage becomes your greatest asset. While you are unleashing erratic magic, the Gnomish Cunning species trait protects you, granting advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic. If a chaotic surge or an enemy's spell threatens your mind, your innate gnomish resilience helps you shrug it off. Additionally, Darkvision ensures you can target your controller spells accurately in pitch-black dungeons without needing a revealing torch.

Wild Magic Sorcery Features

Wild Magic Surge

Level 3

Once per turn, after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, the DM can have you roll a d20. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a random magical effect.

Tides of Chaos

Level 3

You can gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. Once you do so, you can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest. Any time before you regain the use of this feature, the DM can have you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. You then regain the use of this feature.

Bend Luck

Level 6

When another creature you can see makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can use your reaction and spend 2 sorcery points to roll 1d4 and apply the number rolled as a bonus or penalty (your choice) to the creature's roll. You can do so after the creature rolls but before any effects occur.

Controlled Chaos

Level 14

Whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, you can roll twice and use either result.

Tamed Surge

Level 18

You gain a measure of control over the surges of your wild magic. Whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, you can roll twice and choose which result to use. If you roll the same number on both dice, you can instead choose any effect on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wild Magic Sorcery a good subclass for Gnome Sorcerer?
Yes! It is a fantastic and fun combination. Wild Magic is notoriously unpredictable, but the Gnome's Gnomish Cunning trait acts as a built-in safety net. Having advantage on mental saving throws helps protect you from your own chaotic magical mishaps, making the Gnome one of the safest and most resilient species to play this high-risk subclass.
What makes Wild Magic Sorcery different from other Sorcerer subclasses?
Wild Magic Sorcery stands out because it specializes in probability manipulation and chaotic adaptability. While other subclasses offer predictable buffs, Wild Magic lets you bend luck. You can grant yourself easy advantage with Tides of Chaos, and later use Bend Luck to alter enemy saving throws, making it the ultimate subclass for players who want to control the battlefield through fate-bending chaos.
